side effects?

Terrible taste in mouth! But it cleared up quickly when I finished my round.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:42 (one year ago) link

Absolutely terrible, bitted taste in the mouth and (sorry) some diarrhea, which are two of the most commonly reported side effects.

"bitter"

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:44 (one year ago) link

did it help to eat afterward? That's what my buddy who took it in October did; he even chewed gum.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:45 (one year ago) link

Temporarily, I guess. But the taste always kind of hung there, even shortly after brushing my teeth. It was annoying for sure.

That said, it's been more than 24 hours since my last Paxlovid course and the taste is gone now.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:51 (one year ago) link

good to know. i had heard horror stories about the flavor but not how quickly that faded.

Actually as an update to my wife's Paxlovid thing and the sore subject I alluded to - she called the doctor's office yesterday and spoke to a different doctor in the office, because her usual doctor was off. That doctor prescribed her Paxlovid, but the prescription never came through to the pharmacy. Find out this morning finally that her actual doctor said she wasn't high-rick enough to warrant it. Huh.

So I feel kinda guilty. Not sure if being four years older or having had a history of high blood pressure kicked me up a category, but feels weird to have something that really helped me not be available to her.

We had avoided it for years but my husband now has it. Looks like it was from a family get-together we were all at - us, our two kids, three other adults and kid. The three other adults are all positive, me and our kids negative and no symptoms yet. Wondering how much to bother 'isolating' him from the rest of us as we have all been at the 'spreader event' and in the same rooms for the past 3 days.
Family member with cancer decided not to come to the gathering so that's a bullet dodged at least.

kinder, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 11:09 (one year ago) link

Ugh, sorry. I know what you mean about isolating, in some ways it was a relief when my wife tested positive 2 days after me because at least we didn't have to try to isolate. otoh I know several people in households where one person's gotten it and the rest didn't, so it's not a given that you'll get it. Either way, sympathies.

Sorry to hear that kinder. Yeah, it’s wild how it works. Amazingly, our son never caught it despite us both having it. I mean, we all wore masks and distanced the best we could, but with both parents having it, true isolation from both of us the whole time was impossible.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 20:09 (one year ago) link

Yeah, from my friends that have had it I think it's almost more common that both/everyone doesn't get than they do! Thanks all - good to know a 2-day lag is possible too!

kinder, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 21:03 (one year ago) link

We can just file that under "Vaccines work", right?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 21:48 (one year ago) link

My other half who has it had a booster recently - my last one was Dec 2021!

kinder, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 22:19 (one year ago) link

My husband came down with it about five or six days ago. Thankfully we have a basement rec room for him to sequester himself in; so far I’m remaining clear and pretty amazed as for the few days prior to his diagnosis we were joined at the hip

it finally got me. I've had the worst sore throat of my life for the last day or so and mild other symptoms but until this morning had tested negative (but assumed I had it). that's almost a week from initial exposure and I guess further exposure from my husband.

trying to gauge which of us is less infected to deal with the kids!

paxlovid pretty miraculous btw, feeling 80 percent this morning compared to hovering around oh let’s say 10 on friday

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 January 2023 13:55 (one year ago) link

I wonder if the increasing lack of anxiety among friends who've gotten COVID has a lot to do with whether they get prescribed Paxlovid.

My best to all of youse!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 8 January 2023 14:09 (one year ago) link

my personal experience getting prescribed paxlovid, in the hopes it helps anyone else: there's a telehealth service in new york that i contacted. i told them i had asthma, and immediately after i had a prescription delivered to me (asthma is not known to increase the potential mortality of covid but no one in the medical community seems to have absorbed this knowledge. also did they do any kind of due diligence to check if i actually had asthma? no. (i do.))

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 January 2023 14:57 (one year ago) link

New York apparently has very liberal standards for giving out Paxlovid. Anyway there isn’t a shortage of Paxlovid so it’s not like you have to worry you took it away from someone else, Brad.

Meanwhile in Minnesota, based on my family’s experience, they apparently give Paxlovid to nobody.

Lord Pickles (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 8 January 2023 17:18 (one year ago) link

Lotsa doctors worried about interference with other drugs, even though it's been well established for some of these competing drugs you can lower/miss dose temporarily to avoid that

paranormal bully romance (Neanderthal), Sunday, 8 January 2023 17:19 (one year ago) link

My sis and parents took Molnupiravir and it had the same miraculous effects.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 8 January 2023 17:20 (one year ago) link

sister getting it for the third time is making me wonder if people don't have certain unconscious habits (nail-biting and eye rubbing, not washing hands after going on public transit, etc) that lead to contracting this more easily/often? but don't want to suggest it's a moral/ethical issue. just can't help but wonder how i keep dodging the bullets. imagine it's still a matter of time and will straight up kill me when we dance.

I’m a disgusting person and have never gotten it. Dumb luck I guess.

Jeff, Sunday, 8 January 2023 21:24 (one year ago) link

i don’t think it has anything to do with any of those things

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 January 2023 21:34 (one year ago) link

Not anymore.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 8 January 2023 21:55 (one year ago) link

Also not a moral judgment, but everyone that I know who has gotten it recently was in an enclosed space with other people, unmasked, often for some duration. This is certainly how I got it in May.

But we just had 12 people together in the Catskills over the New Year, and we all tested assiduously beforehand, and poof! Everyone is still clear a week later.

I went to California in November and wore a mask even while eating, really, tho there were some lax moments. I thought that I was going to get it for sure, but nope!

Vaccines and masks work, the latter being especially important I think. I don’t go indoors (other than my
own house) without one clasped to
my face.

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Sunday, 8 January 2023 22:35 (one year ago) link

I also just don’t really eat out or go out that much tho lmfao

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Sunday, 8 January 2023 22:36 (one year ago) link

I've been using the decent filter masks to go in shops but our big pharmacy chains have stopped even selling them. You can get them online but it is another 'we're all back to normal, nothing to see here!' while 1 in 20 people in the UK have covid...

My throat is awful, it's only day 3 but it's not improving. I can't eat or sleep very well so it's all a bit miserable. Wouldn't be too bad apart from that.

kinder, Monday, 9 January 2023 10:07 (one year ago) link

i assume i got it from seeing puss and boots (i was masked, but when you’re drinking or eating inside while masked, you’re not really masked, imo), the small nye party i attended everyone seemed to get out unscathed

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 9 January 2023 11:09 (one year ago) link

but also i know plenty of ppl who got it recently who’ve remained as careful as ever and have no fucking clue how they got it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 9 January 2023 11:10 (one year ago) link

(assuming this has something to do with how everyone else has abandoned ppe but who knows)

extremely mild. blocked/runny nose, mild headaches. i’m on day 2 and i doubt it’s going to get worse. (he said, jinxing it)

i’m going to see my immunocompromised mother in two weeks and my last booster was in october so this is actually the most perfect timing i could have

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 30 March 2023 13:02 (one year ago) link

FFS, is it my imagination or is this the 4th time you've had it? Hope you recover quickly.

Yeah, I couldn't remember, like Peter Puma, if it was three or four times now.

two months pass...

SO I tested positive on Friday evening. Second time.

I don't wish to jinx it but so far it seems to be extremely mild. On the order of "just a bad cold" thing that one hears people talking about. I had one nauseated evening and one sweaty night, and felt fine the next morning. I have a cough that I suspect will linger for a while but as long as I get hydration and rest I expect to be fine.

One thing that surprised me is that I knew EXACTLY what it was. I am a conoisseur of maladies. I can tell the difference between different kinds of pain in the way that a talented sommelier can distinguish vintages.

I hurled, then felt my forehead, and said, "yep, hi, COVID." The test was a formality.

My previous bout (last summer) had me feeling wretched in a tent in the backyard for several days. This encounter seems to be resolving itself within a matter of hours. Fortunately. I know not everyone has been fortunate in this way.

pomplamoose and circumstance (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 25 June 2023 18:57 (ten months ago) link

Glad it's milder this time.
Though it's gotten 0 public service announcements or news coverage, even ads, that I've seen, there was another booster approved this spring, for those who had one six months previous, so I got mine at CVS in April. Worth looking into.
