I'm worried there will be too much math.

Same, I'm hoping this is the mech game I always wanted to exist (after playing the BattleTech/Mech Warrior game at North Pier in Chicago as a kid, with the fully-enclosed cockpits). In the same way that Dark Souls was the fantasy version of that, although in that case I didn't know I wanted it until I got into it.

xp lol yeah, that's the main thing - they've learned how to make games *feel* so good to play, so hopefully it's more intuitive that the old games appear to be.

four months pass...

August 25th!

Although in a way it's nice that this is mostly a single-player game, that way I don't feel compelled to play it right at launch (normally I like to experience the chaos and naivete of From multi-player as its own unique experience).

Holy shit

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 April 2023 19:27 (eleven months ago) link

don't go into this expecting it to be anything like dark souls, from have been explicit about it being 100% an AC game, don't expect major deviations to the formula. iirc Miyazaki's first director credit at from was an AC title, so it's not like he does not know how to make them

the game will play nothing like that trailer might suggest if you don't already know what to look for

I'm worried there will be too much math.

picking the right loadout for each mission is like half the battle.
think pocket circuit racing from yakuza except money for parts is scarce and instead of customising your car then watching the race play out you still have to play the mission and not fuck up

chihuahuau, Friday, 28 April 2023 00:10 (eleven months ago) link

Ugh, so this is like juggling and balancing stats in Dark Souls only having to do it repeatedly?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 April 2023 00:50 (eleven months ago) link

probably, though i'm not an authority or anything having played only one of these (ac for answer, which apparently is one of the faster paced ones)

that and controlling the robot itself will likely be a pain to many.
in the world where apparently the original RE4 on gamecube had a "clunky" control scheme that needed to be "fixed" for the 2023 remaster i can't wait to see how people who've never played a mecha game react. then again it's not like the souls games aren't already a tad atypical with their left/right weapons on l/r shoulder buttons mapping and people are perfectly fine with that so what do i know

here's a sample of the "mecha genre" though in this case it's a more execution heavy and much faster paced action game than i expect AC6 to be, a devil may cry vs souls game sort of contrast, if you will:

Kinda overselling how hardcore this will be imo. It’s a AAA title from a company that has learned a shit ton since their last entry in this series. It will be difficult, weird, and esoteric, but they’ve built an audience that’s hungry for all of that.

circa1916, Friday, 28 April 2023 17:48 (eleven months ago) link

I dunno, Minecraft and Fortnite are hugely popular but if you don't give a shit about building stuff they might as well be Fromsoft at its most hardcore.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 April 2023 18:07 (eleven months ago) link

Oh yeah, I’m sure you will be spending some time building out mechs. Personally 100% into that.

circa1916, Friday, 28 April 2023 18:21 (eleven months ago) link

I like the idea of being encouraged to respec for each level, since respec'ing for a boss always felt like a bit of an admission of defeat in Souls games, personally.

I'm also curious where this will fall on the scale between a) following up their most successful Souls-type game with an unapologetic mech game that confuses their fans, and b) taking everything they've learned about making fairly complicated mechanics feel good and making a mech game that's accessible to the general public, and doesn't feel as insanely chaotic as that above video looks.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Friday, 28 April 2023 20:00 (eleven months ago) link

thats a weird way to think about it imo. nintendo followed up their most successful zelda game with an unapologetic mario game and it didn't confuse fans. it's a different thing.

ciderpress, Friday, 28 April 2023 20:16 (eleven months ago) link

From has been on this run of making iterations on a similar type of game though, and this is the first big left turn in awhile.

Or maybe it's just weird timing since Elden Ring just brought them millions of new fans? Like, I'm a From die-hard who will play anything they make, but I was surprised by how popular ER turned out to be and by how many people had never played any of their previous games. I'm just curious if this will be their Kid A, lol.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Friday, 28 April 2023 20:50 (eleven months ago) link

I haven't ever played an Armored Core game, the last pure-mecha game I ever played seriously was... Mechwarrior 2 (in the 90s!). The teaser trailer looks incredibly good, and if it's 3D-but-on-rails bullet-hell then I'm definitely down. If it's "all range mode" like the bad levels of Starfox then I'm not interested

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 28 April 2023 21:13 (eleven months ago) link

With ciderpress on this one, I’m of the mind that “Ho boy, you Souls kids won’t be able to wrap your heads around this one” is (maybe!) a silly take.

I have admittedly never played an Armored Core game (though have since watched a bunch of old video out of curiosity) but have played a grip of mech games, slow to fast, over the years. From Mechwarrior shit to Gundam shit to Deamon X Machina. It’s not rocket science. And it’s not hard to see ppl who have liked the From stuff of the past 15 years adapting to something like this.

But… different strokes. Clearly some are already not too stoked on the idea of heavy mech customization or having to shoot too much. :)

circa1916, Friday, 28 April 2023 21:37 (eleven months ago) link

It’s not rocket science.

Disrespectful to the scientists who designed these mech rockets imo

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Friday, 28 April 2023 22:03 (eleven months ago) link

i bet sekiro is significantly more "hardcore" than AC6 will be and everyone was on board with that. i'm just happy they're making something other than a souls game this time

a mech game that's accessible to the general public, and doesn't feel as insanely chaotic as that above video looks.

hold on a moment, that video wasn't meant as a preview, EDF's a completely different game and i'd be very surprised if AC6 plays anything like it (sandlot should take note and also make something other than edf and remastered edf for a change)

it doesn't need to be accessible, enough people just need to give it chance and they will because somehow in 2022 ER was a top 5 selling title. pre-orders for this will probably outsell all previous games in the series

chihuahuau, Friday, 28 April 2023 22:17 (eleven months ago) link

Sekiro was still pretty essentially Soulslike at heart. This seems totally different. I watched the Vadi Vashta (sp) take on the (er) core ideas of the series, and iirc he summed it up as a lot of multitasking. Fuel, ammo, stats, resources... But who knows, new game, new era. It looks like it could be so crazy I'm surprised they're doing last gen.

Just got around to watching and yeah, this looks fucking awesome.

Love all the elegant dash/dash-cancelling and those dive in approaches for melee attacks. Looks so satisfying and balletic. Been playing a lot of Street Fighter 6 recently, so I'm all primed for that kinda twitchy dance. Curious to see what gameplay looks like with a heavier mech.

In general I really like Fightin Cowboy. I was worried for a minute that I was a fan of some secret Trumper - weight-lifting, gun-owning, used-to-vape-on-screen bro in Tennessee - but stealthy as he is with his politics, everything I've discovered indicates he's a good guy. He did a pro choice fundraiser a year or so ago, I've seen him vocally defend inclusivity and representation in games and gaming and ban assholes that disagreed, he's a strong proponent of accessibility features in games, etc.

On one hand bang bang shooty shooty hypercolour lazer vomit space Sekiro with insane UI does not appeal to me very much. I am bad at this sort of thing and it all looks very headachey.

On the other, I am 100% playing this game the second it comes out

Vaati's video is great btw, very informative.

Yeah can't wait to watch it properly

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Tuesday, 25 July 2023 21:46 (eight months ago) link

The game is reportedly 50-60 hours long, which seems exhausting, for what it (apparently) is.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 12:53 (eight months ago) link

But it's broken up into missions and checkpoints, I'm all good with having a long campaign. Assuming the action is compelling enough to keep going, which I'm sure it will be given that that's the whole point.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 13:20 (eight months ago) link

I always find these game length predictions a bit strange. A Google search says Elden Ring takes around 133 hours to 100% which actually seems like not much time at all. I'm about 90 hours into Dark Souls 1 and I'm only at the Duke's Archives. It's all relative to how you play.

Also, Vaati seemed to think that it's less about simply rushing through and beating every level, but going back and fine-tuning your mech so you get an S grade.

I totally see how that's the appeal because this was where I got the most pleasure from Death Stranding: Once the whacky-bizarre story was out the way (and I did enjoy it), the real game started when I was learning to place zipwires juuuuuust right so I could shave seconds off my delivery time.

Essentially it became a strategy building game as opposed to an action-adventure.

And I see ACVI being somewhat like that: If you focus on matching your build to a level, you will be able to beat it. But it's about tinkering and experimenting until you get it right or else you're going to fail, fail and fail again.

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 13:32 (eight months ago) link

Yeah, it's nice that you can completely swap out your build after your first death to a boss, but I can see wanting to replay the level with a build that works for the whole thing.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 13:40 (eight months ago) link

Hmm, I'm trying to think of any games I've played where I've wanted to go back and play a level a different way, or with a different build, just for fun or the challenge. Coming up with nothing right now, but then, I've never played any of the From games more than once so far.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 13:44 (eight months ago) link

I've replayed a few of the games, but none of them had options to immediately replay a boss or to instantly swap to a different build, so this will be a pretty different beast (also replaying the level still earns you more $ to buy mech parts, so it's there for people who just want to grind).

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 13:59 (eight months ago) link

Yeah I like the idea of being able to "re-spec your mech"* or having a sort of arsenal of different builds, and the game experience changes wildly according to this.

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 14:45 (eight months ago) link

How is that different from, say, Hades? Just that it's not random?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 14:49 (eight months ago) link

I've not really played Hades, so I dunno

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 15:00 (eight months ago) link

Yeah, I dunno, maybe that's not the best comparison. I'm still curious how this game, with all its action and explosions and particles and bits and pieces, will run on past generation consoles.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 15:13 (eight months ago) link

I think it's the opposite of Hades, you get to meticulously build your builds and they're persistent. It seems like a lot of the game is designing & choosing the right mech for different missions.

Random Restaurateur (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 15:21 (eight months ago) link

I really have no idea what I am in for.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 July 2023 15:28 (eight months ago) link

Yeah I think it sounds like you build up a little collection of mechs suitable for different situations. And then you're like "Hmm, let's try this tank on this flying boss hmmm nope, that's no good, okay let's try this hovering one" etc...

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Wednesday, 26 July 2023 15:40 (eight months ago) link

And if one wanted to go full fantasy, that's how one would approach a battle, too, not by rushing in but by taking the time to see what you need to equip based on intelligence.

as someone who gets the "no spoilers" thing and indeed prefers to go in blind regarding endings, npc questlines etc, the "don't look stuff up/don't ask for help/don't summon" gatekeeping can fuck off, the souls games in particular were clearly designed to encourage communal-arcade-notebook info sharing but even if they weren't who cares, play how you want to

Whoa, beat Sea Spider on the 3rd try thanks to circa's tip about using quad legs (and the heaviest weapons I could find, two bazookas, a grenade launcher, and a big missile launcher).

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Sunday, 27 August 2023 21:49 (seven months ago) link

Nice! That guy has like a billion hit points and some nasty ground moves, so staying in the air with heavy artillery really does seem like the best way to do it. It’s tempting to unload when he’s staggered, but I found prioritizing getting your boost meter charged during that window to be the way to go. Gotta stay airborne.

circa1916, Monday, 28 August 2023 01:26 (seven months ago) link

I'm impressed that by all accounts this game runs pretty great out of the box. What do you expect, or hope, From to offer in the way of inevitable patches and tweaks?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 28 August 2023 14:18 (seven months ago) link

I saw some twitter thread about how running the PS4 version on PS5 has a better frame rate etc, but everything seems just fine with the PS5 version.

Really what I (and a lot of people apparently) want is better & easier matchmaking for pvp. I tried the online arena for the first time yesterday and it felt very old school PC -- people create rooms with their own parameters (time, map, number of people in the room, whether winner or loser rotates, etc) and you try to get into them and get into a match. At first I ended up in a room with 10 people and was spectating while other people played, with no option to exit or leave the room during combat. It's not that big of a deal, but it would be nice to have an option to just hop into a random 1v1 without all the hullabaloo.

(I actually won my first match, was about to win the second one when they quit, resulting in a draw, then got absolutely shredded by someone with an endgame build who also knew what they were doing).

Other than that, idk? I do wonder if they're going to nerf some of the bosses that people have been complaining about, but I kind of hope they don't.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Monday, 28 August 2023 14:41 (seven months ago) link

Btw that quad build I made for Sea Spider came in handy to pull out for the end of the 'Steal the Survey Data' mission, with all those reinforcement mechs you need to fight. I've started replaying more missions so that I don't have to sell parts, it's better to keep multiple builds ready to go if I want to switch to them from a checkpoint.

Okay so I finally got to play this tonight after a few days away. Managed to beat the helicopter after 8 or 9 goes, but it felt like luck more than anything else.

Then I spent WAY too long customising my mech to make it look cool. So much fun, even if the decal system is fiddly and annoying as anything.

Still got to get the hang of a few controls. There's a lot to learn, and often I feel like I need more fingers than it requires

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:11 (seven months ago) link

I beat this and will roll through NG+1.

Had a lot of fun, but I have to say… wtf is up with the balancing in this? Once you find the right build (or 3) it’s a cakewalk. I beat a lot of these end-game bosses on the first try. 2-3 attempts at most.

Balteus seems to be the actual boss of the game as far as difficulty is concerned and he’s at the end of Ch 1.

circa1916, Saturday, 2 September 2023 03:59 (seven months ago) link

I haven't had a lot of time to play so I'm still on chapter 3, near the end I think. The arena version of Carla was nearly as hard as Balteus, I had to break out the tank. What main build did you settle on?

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Saturday, 2 September 2023 04:29 (seven months ago) link

Zimmerman shotguns and Songbird shoulder grenade launchers are just unbeatable. I’d switch out the shotguns for Gatling guns depending on the situation. Forget the name, but once I found the heavy duty reverse joint legs I stuck with them for most of it. The wheelchair tank legs also good. The needle shoulder cannons you get for worm boss also handy for other bosses. Flame throwers come in handy occasionally for small levels with swarms of small guys.

Can coast with that.

This is all more or less the distillation of the just-posted (non gag) Dunkey review.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 2 September 2023 13:50 (seven months ago) link

I thought that was overstating things a bit, most missions are a slice of pie but I've gotten some decent challenge from some of the AC mini-bosses, especially when they throw more than one at a time at you. And it's still fun when it's easy.

My current favorite build is the chicken legs, dual laser handguns, and a Songbird + 10 missile launcher on the back. Still haven't gotten the hang of melee - it's a lot to switch weapons and properly boost within range all during the two seconds your opponent is staggered.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Saturday, 2 September 2023 14:55 (seven months ago) link

I kinda don’t like that Dunkey dude, but he’s partially right in that review.

NG+ is even easier because enemies aren’t buffed and you have a full kit at your disposal + all your knowledge gained. They mix up some missions which is fun, but nothing that will make you sweat.

I hope they release a good grip of DLC (in true AC fashion, before it was d/l’able) because the core combat is really good and I feel like you could do so much more with it.

circa1916, Sunday, 3 September 2023 06:36 (seven months ago) link

Apparently NG++ has a ton of new missions, which is kinda crazy? But I guess that's their Lake of Ash in this game.

I've been playing with a rapid fire build, dual machine guns + gatling guns where you keep alternating between them and never have to stop firing. It's not great against human opponents, but it just melts ACs in the arena and in missions.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 15:24 (seven months ago) link

After being on the receiving end of flamethrowers and realizing how annoying it is not to be able to see anything, I made an annoying pvp build with double flamethrowers and double vertical plasma missiles, lol. Some people are flummoxed by it and melt down, but it's useless against some builds. Part of the problem is that I can barely see what they're doing through the flames, so it's harder to dodge some melee/bazooka/etc attacks.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Thursday, 7 September 2023 16:24 (seven months ago) link

I finished playthrough #1, now ripping through ng+. There was a particularly epic fight against redacted late game boss, where I ran out of ammo for the first time and ended up punching it to death, with my cannon falling off after firing the final shot, crazy.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Monday, 11 September 2023 15:25 (seven months ago) link

Nice. I played about 2/3 of NG+ and then Baldur's Gate came out so I haven't played in a while. Will probably go back.

New patch just dropped and it looks like they nerfed Balteus and 2 other roadblock bosses. Buffed a few weapons too.

circa1916, Monday, 11 September 2023 15:31 (seven months ago) link

Ohhh, I did just steamroll Balteus in ng+ before going to work and I thought it was just because of my endgame build. Oh well, I'm kinda glad I beat it pre-patch (similar to pre-nerf Radahn).

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Monday, 11 September 2023 15:34 (seven months ago) link

Can someone explain how the scan thing works? I recently did the level with the undercover mechs that seem to hide themselves inside walls. I'm scanning, but it's not really clear what the scanner really is meant to be showing.

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 11:32 (seven months ago) link

You mean the one with the stealth mechs that are invisible at range and can seemingly teleport in the first part of the stage? That's a bit of a weird one-off, it tells you to use your scanner to find them initially, but I don't think it works in the boss fight when they're clinging high up on the walls.

I found the scanner to generally be of limited utility, it's best in the enclosed hallway/tunnel levels to see if an enemy mech is around the corner, or hiding on the ceiling before you drop down somewhere. Not sure if it actually highlights the chests where you find parts, but I don't think it ever helped me find one.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 15:07 (seven months ago) link

Oh I think scanning might also highlight any mission targets, ie when you have to destroy some inanimate object? Not entirely sure if it's necessary or not.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 16:37 (seven months ago) link

xp, yeah that's it. the scanner didn't seem to help at all. It was mega confusing. The only way to spot them was to just haphazardly shoot in the rough direction the lazers were firing from until I got a lock

Haha yeah, I would go to the wall they were shooting from and try to jump up directly below them like an excited dog (I think I eventually switched to quad legs on my first playthrough to get up there more easily). Definitely died a lot, it was fun to blow through it in ng+.

If Balteus has been nerfed I hate to think of what he was like before that.

It's great that I can respec between checkpoints, but it's sort of a shame that going back to the shop means starting the mission again and having to do the same bullshit every time I want to experiment with a different build. Maybe that's too much of an ask though.

Anyway, I can somehow get him down to a slither of health but somehow die right at the end. Happened a half dozen times yesterday with a lightweight build I was using. So so close!

Well I finished ng++ and I think I can put this game aside now. Glad I played through all the endings and appreciated the new missions/variations that get peppered in along the way, but my sore hands will be happy to move on to something with less frantic button pressing (partly my own fault for sticking with the laser handguns and not something with rapid fire).

I have been enjoying this game but in small doses. The levels are alot easier than the bosses.
I got up to Balteus and hit a bit of a wall. I looked up a guide that suggested a very light mecha, and I was frequently getting it down to the last 10% but he'd come and wreck me in the Nth minute.

I've seen a more tanky, heavy build suggested, but I guess the frustrating bit about re-speccing is that this is fine mid-mission, but not if you want to go to the shop. I also doubt this big tank build would be any good for the level preceding Balteus, so it's a given I'd have to sell all my current stuff, then buy everything for the tank build plus a build to get through the level.

How do you all feel about the build system? Do you find it easy to get your head around? I don't find the different parts easy to distinguish from each other and they all have quite cumbersome names, so it's kind of difficult for me to experiment. Instead it seems I'm reliant on online guides to tell me how to build my mecha.

Then again, it's early days for me. I've a lot to learn

Very soon you'll have enough money that you won't have to sell parts to make new builds, and can keep different saved mechs that you can easily switch to at a boss checkpoint (you could replay earlier missions to get that together if you want, the 'Destroy the Tester AC' one is popular for being very short with a decent payout).

I end up liking the build system. I don't even really look at the names, just the blue lines and numbers. Basically I go for a combo of legs + weapons that I want, and everything else is just to support that (with maybe more attention to the generator, especially if I'm using energy weapons). Again it got easier once I had a bunch of saved builds that I could tweak slightly at a boss checkpoint, rather than making builds from scratch.

Strictly anecdotal, but I feel that a couple of years after release people are still excitedly talking about "Elden Ring," but a couple of months after release far fewer people are talking about "Armored Core."

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 October 2023 11:49 (five months ago) link

The reasons are:

Baldur's Gate 3 came out the week after and I think that just ate into everyone's play time
A much more linear storyline means less to discuss. Unlike Elden Ring.

I haven't really played much - I got to the second boss and then started BG3. I fully intend to get back into it.

It's a far shorter and more contained game that Elden Ring, and I haven't felt compelled to keep playing the multiplayer after finishing it (3x). It was still very memorable though.

I did end up really liking the story elements, there are some straightforward elements but there's certainly a lot left to the imagination about the various characters, and the AC reddit was still chewing on it last time I looked.

Yeah, I suspect I'll get to it at some point. But even setting aside "Baldur's Gate," there has been a steady stream of stuff that seems to have gotten, or will get, more attention. "Lies of P" or "Lords of the Fallen" for From nerds, "Spider-man 2" or "Alan Wake 2" for tech-chasing single player nerds, "RE4" remake and "Tears of the Kingdom" for franchise nerds, etc. There will always be distractions. Just arm-chairing, but I suspect it may be a combination of limited appeals: a long-dormant cult franchise, the still relatively niche appeal of From, factoring in how this game apparently deviates from formula, the reportedly now fixed frustrating early boss checks, and so on.

Yeah, funny because the front end of this year didn't seem especially fruitful for games and I ended up mostly going back to things like Dark Souls 1 and Sekiro. Then suddenly it's all go!

It's finally discounted (down to $40) but ... I just can't do it. Looks too frenetic, doesn't look fun, and I still have "Returnal" to play when I feel like self/controller punishment.

i played the first chapter and it was good (although really really hard at times, even by from standards) but what put me off continuing in favour of other games (bg3 actually came out weeks earlier on pc though) was that having to redesign my mech constantly to adapt to each level was such a hassle, it's just so complicated and difficult to assess what was an effective upgrade or not.

i'll get back to it eventually

That's what I find most frustrating, or unappealing. The last thing I want to do is constantly swap out 5 million different builds, depending on the battle. To each their own. Hell, there are people that really seem enthused about Balders Gate's character creator, but I couldn't give a shit about that stuff. I've tried watching a couple walkthroughs, and the first episode is almost always entirely creating a character.

UFO otm. I wish it were easier for me to tell one head set from another but it really is like trying to find the exact right replacement screw for secondhand flatpack furniture sometimes

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Sunday, 24 December 2023 09:08 (four months ago) link

I find From games tough enough without needing to juggle stats and builds.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 24 December 2023 15:57 (four months ago) link

I really wouldn't worry too much about the details. The main thing is picking legs and weapons (and maybe an appropriate FCS), and then just fill in the rest whatever will let you hit the weight/energy requirements.

I quickly hit a point where I had a few saved build templates that I liked, and I would just switch between those for the rest of the game. With occasional upgrades when I would get access to new weapons or wanted to try a different approach on a boss.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Sunday, 24 December 2023 17:00 (four months ago) link

I thought I would find it stressful because I like to forget about stats in Souls games as quickly as possible, and avoid complicated builds. But honestly I found it much more relaxing than being locked into a build. It's fun to try things without having to start a new character and play the whole game over.
