That TV column he wrote for The Standard was often the only thing worth reading in that rag.

His album Tested On Humans For Irritancy was big for me as a kid, my mate taped a copy for a bunch of us and we'd play it incessantly during art lessons. Pretty sure I committed most of it to memory.

I never know who any of these UK celebrities are, but I knew this guy for one thing at least:

He always seemed to be on the verge of becoming better known with the wider public. Bit of a shock that he was 65.

A particularly lovely Badalamenti effort that was one of the first things I encountered from him after Blue Velvet: his orchestration on the Pet Shop Boys' "It Couldn't Happen Here"

The cassette of the Twin Peaks soundtrack was jammed in my car’s tape player on the first date that my future husband and I went on in 2011. Has a very special place for me as a result— also has somehow led to him giving me cassettes for every major gift giving occasion, which I don’t mind, but which is a bit funny, too.

Super Sky Point to Stuart Margolin, who made Angel such a memorable and endearing character on The Rockford Files. I hope his first act in the hereafter is to call his old pal Jimmy and tell him he’s in trouble and needs his help. And may old friends be together again. #RIP pic.twitter.com/5mycPoTxPP

legendary college football coach mike leach, 61

here's a great thread about his impact on football strategy

Incredibly momentous for football that Mike Leach has passed away. It is no understatement whatsoever to say that Leach fundamentally changed football forever, and I am not sure there was any more influential coach in the last 40 years, when you include high school and college.🧵

The character Angel from The Rockford Files is responsible for one of the best off-the-cuff puns I have ever heard.

One time, my dad was talking about this show and called Angel "a conniver."

One of us kids asked "what's a conniver?"

My sister piped up, "Someone who doesn't know how to pronounce the word 'knife.'"

All this time I thought Badalamenti was European. Something about the stateliness seems old world, but that's sorta true of Lynch too.

Col. Joseph Kittinger, 94.
https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2022/12/10/air-force-col-ret-joseph-kittinger-who-set-parachute-record-dies/

Kittinger, then an Air Force captain and pilot, gained worldwide fame when he completed three jumps over 10 months from a gondola that was hoisted into the stratosphere by large helium balloons. Project Excelsior was aimed at helping design ejection systems for military pilots flying high-altitude missions.

Wearing a pressure suit and 60 pounds of equipment, Kittinger almost died during the project’s first jump in November 1959 when his gear malfunctioned after he jumped from 14.5 miles. He lost consciousness as he went into a spin that was 22 times the force of gravity. He was saved when his automatic chute opened.
Four weeks later, Kittinger made his second jump from just over 14 miles above the surface. This time, there were no problems.

Kittinger’s record jump came on Aug. 16, 1960, in the New Mexico desert. His pressure suit malfunctioned as he rose, failing to seal off his right hand, which swelled to twice normal size before he jumped from 102,800 feet — more than 19 miles above the surface.

Kittinger is probably best known now as "the parachutist from the Boards Of Canada video"

Puerto Rican salsa singer “Lalo” Rodríguez was found dead Tuesday at a public housing project in San Juan. ...He was 64...Rodríguez was once in Eddie Palmieri’s band and is best known for his 1988 hit, “Ven, devórame otra vez” or “Come, Devour Me Again.” at the age of 16, Lalo Rodríguez won a Grammy together with the Eddie Palmieri orchestra for the album, “The Sun of Latin Music”.
On that record there is a composition authored by Lalo.

I’ve enjoyed that ‘The Sun of Latin Music” album for many years. Didn’t realize Lalo was that young.

Yeah, I wrote about that album not long ago; Rodríguez was a really interesting vocalist.

That album features prominently in the Eddie Palmieri chapter of the best book on music you've never read and can't get a copy of easily: In One Ear and in the Other: Memories of 48 Years in Recording, by Fania engineer Irv Greenbaum. Irv sez he was called in by Harvey Averne to edit "Un Dia Bonito," but was a little miffed that he didn't get a credit. The whole book is full of great anecdotes that have the ring of truth about all kinds of performers such as Boris Karloff, Annie Ross, Celia Cruz and James Brown, just to pick some names out of a hat, out of the air.
