Get well soon Mr Jaq!

Madchen, Sunday, 11 December 2022 09:25 (one year ago) link

Best of luck, Mr. Jaq!

Everyone I know who's requested Paxlovid in recent months has responded remarkably well as opposed to over the summer and spring.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 December 2022 10:23 (one year ago) link

sorry to hear about it, jaq, but glad that he's on the mend. i hope you get good news on that second line, or at least some sort of resolution. it's an odd feeling to wait for that other shoe to drop, or not.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 December 2022 16:11 (one year ago) link

Truly - it's a weird space. Unfortunately found out this morning that Mr. Jaq infected my brother-in-law (who can't take Paxlovid and has heart issues) so my sister is in the same liminal zone right now.

Jaq, Sunday, 11 December 2022 16:16 (one year ago) link

Ugh, this is lousy. Hope everyone will be OK soon.

trishyb, Monday, 12 December 2022 09:42 (one year ago) link

Somehow I am still testing negative and having no symptoms, 5 days in. Mr. Jaq took his final Paxlovid dose tonight and it definitely helped - now to see if he rebounds. Brother-in-law is not doing great so they are keeping a close eye on him. My sister has no symptoms, but they live in Nevada where home test kits aren't free, so her doctor told her not to test unless she had symptoms, just to mask everywhere regardless.

Jaq, Wednesday, 14 December 2022 05:11 (one year ago) link

You may well be lucky and get a pass. Husband was in the same places I was when I got it, and I didn't isolate from him while I was sick, and he never tested positive.

trishyb, Wednesday, 14 December 2022 08:57 (one year ago) link

If you're vaccinated, that's why you're vaccinated. I was completely clear when Stet had it too.

Madchen, Wednesday, 14 December 2022 12:28 (one year ago) link

I mean, he was vaccinated too, but even though it didn't prevent him getting it, it probably still prevented me getting it.

Madchen, Wednesday, 14 December 2022 12:29 (one year ago) link

My wife, son, and I spent 36 hours within 10 feet of each other while traveling this summer - hotel, car, restaurant, airport, plane, etc - and I even slept next to him in his bed at home. During that time I got it an neither of them ever did.

joygoat, Wednesday, 14 December 2022 12:43 (one year ago) link

Viruses are weird, man.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 14 December 2022 12:59 (one year ago) link

Yeah, gf's dad got it a while back but her mom never did somehow. Then she somehow did get it before Thanksgiving and accidentally shared it with every (fully vaxxed) person in attendance who hadn't already gotten it (all of whom had tested negative earlier in the day). It was a true holiday miracle.

I've been negative since the weekend and no longer feel sick but, man, the post-COVID fatigue and brain fog is no joke. Back in the office yesterday for the first time in almost three weeks and I was severely flagging by the middle of the day. And things are comparably way slower than usual at work, so thank the lorb that I didn't get this shit during normal business.

Beautiful Bean Footage Fetishist (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 14 December 2022 13:46 (one year ago) link

My wife and daughter didn't isolate from me when I had it in 2020 (pre-vax days) and they both missed it. Hope Mr. Jaq feels better soonest and you miss the bug entirely, Jaq.

DPRK in Cincinnati (WmC), Wednesday, 14 December 2022 16:51 (one year ago) link

Welp.

So far just a little tired, lots of congestion and a very mild fever. Let's hope being update to date on the jabs helps me out here.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 15 December 2022 14:58 (one year ago) link

"up to date", brain fog already?

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 15 December 2022 14:58 (one year ago) link

Day four, still mostly just fatigued, even the cough has faded away. Guessing the Paxlovid has helped. Miraculously, both my wife and son are still testing negative.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 19 December 2022 14:53 (one year ago) link

How is everyone getting Paxlovid except my family? Two different doctors said my sister with numerous health issues “didn’t qualify” even though she was within the time frame. Same thing with my 75 year old mother. Fucks sake.

Lord Pickles (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 19 December 2022 15:31 (one year ago) link

have you tried molnupiravir? My parents used it in June to equally impressive effect.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 December 2022 15:34 (one year ago) link

I don't know. I didn't even get a chance to ask about it, my doctor immediately said she was going to prescribe it.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 19 December 2022 15:36 (one year ago) link

I ended up testing negative and having no symptoms the full 10 days, so yay. Mr. Jaq has some coughing still but very minimal compared to the day before he started taking Paxlovid. I'm unclear what criteria are being used for the antivirals but he was also offered it immediately. My brother-in-law was able to take a different drug (Lagevrio?) and is doing better.

Jaq, Monday, 19 December 2022 20:24 (one year ago) link

that's good to hear on all counts!

Karl Malone, Monday, 19 December 2022 20:37 (one year ago) link

went to a sold out (probably oversold) shoulder to shoulder show at a small venue on thursday and popped a very very frail second line on sunday so guess i have the novel coronavirus. been mostly a pretty much ignorable sore throat, low-grade fever, and occasional headache, like the world's least intrusive cold. feeling lucky!

Clay, Monday, 19 December 2022 20:43 (one year ago) link

congrats, Jaq!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 December 2022 20:50 (one year ago) link

cheers recovering folks

Took my last Paxlovid this morning, probably going to take my first post-infection test this evening. Unfortunately my wife tested positive this morning, so all of our Christmas plans are definitely canceled now.

:(

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 20 December 2022 16:36 (one year ago) link

It is what it is and perhaps catching it was inevitable (I mean, I was literally the last person in my office to still wear a mask), but the timing sucks. It would have been our first mostly "normal" holidays since 2019 but... welp. Just thankful mine has been mild and hoping my wife's is the same.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 20 December 2022 16:45 (one year ago) link

Ugh, so sorry, jon. That sucks hard. Admittedly, once my gf tested positive after Thanksgiving, I made zero effort to distance from her, assuming I would catch it eventually anyway and hoping I would do so before Christmas. A rare gamble that paid off.

Beautiful Bean Footage Fetishist (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 20 December 2022 16:56 (one year ago) link

I hope it stays mild and you can have a cosy time regardless.

trishyb, Tuesday, 20 December 2022 17:05 (one year ago) link

Thanks!

Yeah, I tested negative for the first time last night, which was a relief. Wife is feeling pretty rough today though.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 15:57 (one year ago) link

Has your wife taken Paxlovid, as well? It seems to really be doing the trick. My gf's mom took it and turned around quickly, whereas my gf and I opted out and the 'VID just sank its claws in. I really only started feeling 100% in the last day or so, nearly three weeks after initially testing positive.

Beautiful Bean Footage Fetishist (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:10 (one year ago) link

Ugh, sore subject at the moment. She called her doctor immediately after getting the positive test result and the doctor prescribed it, but something got fucked up in sending it over to our pharmacy and she wasn't able to get it yesterday. Hoping to remedy that today.

I'm certain Paxlovid really made a huge difference for me.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:16 (one year ago) link

side effects?

Terrible taste in mouth! But it cleared up quickly when I finished my round.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:42 (one year ago) link

Absolutely terrible, bitted taste in the mouth and (sorry) some diarrhea, which are two of the most commonly reported side effects.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:44 (one year ago) link

"bitter"

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:44 (one year ago) link

did it help to eat afterward? That's what my buddy who took it in October did; he even chewed gum.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:45 (one year ago) link

Temporarily, I guess. But the taste always kind of hung there, even shortly after brushing my teeth. It was annoying for sure.

That said, it's been more than 24 hours since my last Paxlovid course and the taste is gone now.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 16:51 (one year ago) link

good to know. i had heard horror stories about the flavor but not how quickly that faded.

Actually as an update to my wife's Paxlovid thing and the sore subject I alluded to - she called the doctor's office yesterday and spoke to a different doctor in the office, because her usual doctor was off. That doctor prescribed her Paxlovid, but the prescription never came through to the pharmacy. Find out this morning finally that her actual doctor said she wasn't high-rick enough to warrant it. Huh.

So I feel kinda guilty. Not sure if being four years older or having had a history of high blood pressure kicked me up a category, but feels weird to have something that really helped me not be available to her.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 18:29 (one year ago) link

We had avoided it for years but my husband now has it. Looks like it was from a family get-together we were all at - us, our two kids, three other adults and kid. The three other adults are all positive, me and our kids negative and no symptoms yet. Wondering how much to bother 'isolating' him from the rest of us as we have all been at the 'spreader event' and in the same rooms for the past 3 days.
Family member with cancer decided not to come to the gathering so that's a bullet dodged at least.

kinder, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 11:09 (one year ago) link

Ugh, sorry. I know what you mean about isolating, in some ways it was a relief when my wife tested positive 2 days after me because at least we didn't have to try to isolate. otoh I know several people in households where one person's gotten it and the rest didn't, so it's not a given that you'll get it. Either way, sympathies.

Sorry to hear that kinder. Yeah, it’s wild how it works. Amazingly, our son never caught it despite us both having it. I mean, we all wore masks and distanced the best we could, but with both parents having it, true isolation from both of us the whole time was impossible.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 20:09 (one year ago) link

Yeah, from my friends that have had it I think it's almost more common that both/everyone doesn't get than they do! Thanks all - good to know a 2-day lag is possible too!

kinder, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 21:03 (one year ago) link

We can just file that under "Vaccines work", right?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 21:48 (one year ago) link

My other half who has it had a booster recently - my last one was Dec 2021!

kinder, Wednesday, 4 January 2023 22:19 (one year ago) link

My husband came down with it about five or six days ago. Thankfully we have a basement rec room for him to sequester himself in; so far I’m remaining clear and pretty amazed as for the few days prior to his diagnosis we were joined at the hip
