Truly a great. My childhood memories would be much different without Sesame Street and without him.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 December 2022 01:34 (one year ago) link

RIP. This is one of my favorite things ever.

I've watched Christmas Eve on Sesame Street pretty much every holiday season since it first aired. Having lost both Luis and Bob in '22 is gonna make it rough going this year.

he was so lovely! big bird will be so sad

Love and thanks to you, Bob. May you rest in peace.

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 5 December 2022 06:28 (one year ago) link

The amazing thing about Bob was that he was probably the most naturalistic human performer on Sesame Street. He fully committed to the bit; you never got a winking-to-the-camera or I-am-putting-on-a-show-for-small-children feeling from him when he was talking to a muppet, he just acted like he was talking to another human being. Not something I noticed as a kid, but watching clips as an adult it's pretty amazing, and very difficult to pull off.

bob, luis and gordon were all fathers to me and america

RIP Bob!
Yeah, growing up in a very homogeneous rural part of California, I was mesmerized by the urban/cosmopolitan elements of Sesame Street; it was clearly a city and I think I wanted to see what a real city looked like.
Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street, Electric Company, Zoom - I'm grateful we had such thoughtful shit on TV back then

So sad. Well loved worldwide obviously but also as a guy on the scene in NYC. I told the story when I posted about his disappearance on facebook last week, although I'd seen him around and seen the Mad Scene I never met him until I did the happy refugees reissue and they flew over to open up for Crystal Stilts in brooklyn. Hamish was at the show and the guys in Happy Refugees couldn't believe it, how cool was it that a member of the Clean was at their show! I put him on the list to come to the manhattan show the next night as well and I dj'd between bands, getting props from him for playing Clock DVA's 4 Hours, he came up to me and started singing along.

Seeing reports on FB that Jim Stewart of Stax Records has passed.

Looks like it's true:

On a more underground musical note, Steffen Basho-Junghans, a German acoustic guitarist very much in the Glenn Jones and Jack Rose vein, they were mutual friends and admirers. Glenn posted a great FB note remembering him.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 December 2022 01:45 (one year ago) link

taking on that Cheers role after Shelley Long left was probably one of the toughest gigs in show business and she pulled it off amazingly well.

RIP Steffen, love quite a few of his records, blasting "In the Morning Twilight" right now.

Jet Black of The Stranglers

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 8 December 2022 18:08 (one year ago) link

I had no idea how old he was. Older than any of the Beatles or the Stones! Must've been wild running around playing in 1977 and being 40 years old already.

dan selzer, Thursday, 8 December 2022 19:33 (one year ago) link

Not older than Bill Wyman tbf.

Gulf VAR Syndrome (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 December 2022 19:37 (one year ago) link

I think the last time he was playing with them, he'd only come in for a couple songs

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 8 December 2022 19:58 (one year ago) link

I was thinking he would have been the oldest musician to come up in the punk/new wave scene, but Alan Vega was a couple of months older.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 8 December 2022 21:38 (one year ago) link

Vi Subversa of the Poison Girls was older I think?
anyway RIP Jet Black, cool name cool guy

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 8 December 2022 21:42 (one year ago) link

Vi Subversa was 80 when she died in 2016.

Was just thinking about her recently because she wrote a funny song about Jerry Lee Lewis that I can’t seem to find much trace of on the intranetz.

J.J. Barnes, much admired singer/songwriter in Northern Soul circles, 79. He had one US hit, "Baby Please Come Back Home", but his big Northern tunes were "Our Love Is In The Pocket", "Real Humdinger", "Please Let Me In" and "Sweet Sherry".
