Mike Leach in critical condition, a "personal health issue"...he'd made a lot of sideways comments and dissembling remarks about covid vaccines

Mike Leach, Mississippi State football's innovative and influential coach, dies at 61 https://t.co/e81EEL0C84

fascinating character, obv his politics were terrible but he had a massive impact on football. good thread about it here

Incredibly momentous for football that Mike Leach has passed away. It is no understatement whatsoever to say that Leach fundamentally changed football forever, and I am not sure there was any more influential coach in the last 40 years, when you include high school and college.🧵

I guess he was technically my "coworker" in washington. I'd see him walking to work a lot, and he'd stop for coffee pretty regularly at the place I'd hang out. I never talked to him but shitty politics aside the baristas liked him and by all accounts he was kind of a fascinating weirdo.

v. sad to see dabo lose; i'm sure it was all because his players were distracted by NILs or wokeism or something

i presume this has happened before when january 1 falls on a sunday but it remains weird to me that the orange bowl happened on 12/30 and there are no college bowl games at all on new year's day

mookieproof, Saturday, 31 December 2022 06:00 (one year ago) link

I watched a few minutes of Clemson and Tennessee and decided that was way too much orange for an Orange bowl.

Georgia will probably smoke OSU, but I keep having an odd feeling the Buckeyes might upset them too.

I really want to see Michigan win it all myself, but I am not getting my hopes up.

earlnash, Saturday, 31 December 2022 06:08 (one year ago) link

Right now looks like Michigan is going to lay a big dooker on the field. Every big 12 game is like 52-50 and so far the Woolverines not looking too good.

earlnash, Saturday, 31 December 2022 22:19 (one year ago) link

I could not have cared less about Georgia football before I had a child attend that school. Now . . . Go Dawgs. It should be a thumping.

mookieproof, Sunday, 1 January 2023 01:08 (one year ago) link

weird game, lots of things that shouldn’t have happened did

worst part is that this was a golden opportunity to maybe beat osu in a rematch and win the title. gonna get much harder once the playoff field expands to 12 teams

sault bae (voodoo chili), Sunday, 1 January 2023 01:53 (one year ago) link

Both those games were pretty wacky.

Big 10 fails again.

The Artist formerly known as Earlnash, Sunday, 1 January 2023 09:59 (one year ago) link

We were worn out after the craziness of TCU/Michigan and were telling each other "Thank goodness our game won't be like that" ... and then it was so much worse. As Kirby Smart said afterwards, OSU deserved to win. Maybe he'll get Georgia coached up better for TCU and spare our nerves a little. Go Dawgs, sic 'em, etc.

rip 'schemy'

Three days after he was hired at Michigan, Glenn "Shemy" Schembechler, son of longtime Wolverines coach Bo Schembechler, resigned following social media activity that has "caused concern and pain," according to a statement from the school.

On Wednesday, Schembechler announced he had been hired as Michigan's assistant director of football recruiting. He tweeted: "I'm beyond honored to return home to @UMichFootball! #GoBlue always and forever!"

A source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN that Schembechler went through a thorough background check during the hiring process.

His Twitter account, @shemyscout, was deactivated on Saturday. Schembechler had been a longtime NFL scout, most recently with the Las Vegas Raiders until February. He also scouted for Washington, Chicago and Kansas City. Schembechler spent more than a decade working for Washington's organization.

According to the Detroit News, Schembechler's Twitter timeline had a number of posts and "likes" of multiple offensive and insensitive posts, including several suggesting slavery and Jim Crow were a positive to strengthen Black individuals and families.

New No-No Bettencourt (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 11 July 2023 16:03 (nine months ago) link

Seems he was at least not doing enough to protect his student athletes in the locker room. I don't think ignorance is a great defence here.

New No-No Bettencourt (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 11 July 2023 16:20 (nine months ago) link

to me the real story is that the defense is "this is just the nature of football culture so why is pat fitzgerald being singled out and punished," and i'm sure that first part is true. i don't get the sense that anything being described is uniquely bad, just that fitzgerald got "caught." even from the outside, frankly, these stories seem pretty benign for what i imagine football locker rooms are like

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 July 2023 16:32 (nine months ago) link

i used to spend a lot of time around a major D1 baseball program when i was a kid & one time after a game i peeked into the locker room and one of the players was in there on the floor w/ no clothes on wrapped up in athletic tape as some of the other players like pelted stuff at him. to be clear i'm not excusing pat fitzgerald, just that in a larger sense that focusing on him or framing it as some sort of issue w/ northwestern or w/e obscures the real issue of... locker room sports culture in general -- especially, i would imagine, college locker rooms, where the only actual adults in the room are the ones looking the other way

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 July 2023 16:37 (nine months ago) link

i don't really disagree, but i think what administrators are willing to brush off has changed pretty radically since you were a kid, and fitzgerald is accused of doing a bit more than looking the other way.

Fitzgerald's tenure unwound after a former player, who has since transferred, reported the program's hazing activities to the school in late 2022. The former player, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told ESPN on Sunday that hazing was organized and widespread in Northwestern's program, often led by a group of older players called the "Shrek gang." The group would lead a hazing activity called "running," usually against freshmen or younger players who had made mistakes in practice, he said. According to the former player, older players wearing masks would restrain the victim in a dark locker room and engage in sexualized behavior. The former player said he was "run" as a freshman and also said Fitzgerald signaled for players to be added to "Shrek's list" with a specific clapping motion during practice. He said he saw Fitzgerald make the motion at least five times since the 2020 season.

i think the key there is 'sexualized behavior'. like, you can make kids run extra sprints or whatever, but after sandusky and nassar you cannot do anything along those lines.

nor is northwestern the kind of school where the football program basically owns the administration. fitzgerald was the best coach they ever had, but they went 1-11 last year. lots of people can do that without getting the school sued straight to hell.

Shrek's list

symsymsym, Tuesday, 11 July 2023 20:29 (nine months ago) link

oh i think everything that has happened to fitzgerald since the news started leaking has been entirely predictable & justified. this was only ending one way

but to my point about how focusing on fitzgerald runs the risk of not addressing the larger issue at hand, northwestern has announced that they're retaining all of his assistants. it's not hard to understand from a logistical standpoint why they made this decision (hiring an entire football staff in july is probably next to impossible) and i'm sure all those guys will get cycled out when they hire a new coach, but the implication that fitzgerald was solely responsible for the culture of hazing is of course farcical. i guess we're supposed to believe that the hazing there will now cease because the rest of the coaching staff will have been scared straight or something?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 July 2023 20:40 (nine months ago) link

lol at northwestern's entire athletic department -- apart from chris collins! -- being exposed/fired during the handful of summer days when essentially nothing else is going on in the usa

also lol at the corruption that's going on in athletic departments elsewhere that actually have good players

One of my favorite things about the impending chaos of the in-state rivalry gang (which isn't of course isn't THE rivalry) is that students always paint bedsheets with messages belitting harbaugh for petty imagined offenses and hang them on the front of their houses - like "harbaugh drives with his mask on" or "harbaugh posts 'how to open pdf' on facebook".

I want to make one this year that says "harbaugh allegedly committed 'Level II: Significant Breach of Conduct' and 'Level I: Severe Breach of Conduct' violations of NCAA rules"

Nebraska's offense is about as competent as the Carolina Panther's last year. That QB was having all sorts of problems with the fumbles. Their D held up pretty good for a good part of the game with Colorado until they ran out of gas being on the field all day.

Be interesting to see if Colorado looks past Colorado St to their match-up against the Ducks, which will be a better thermometer of how good they might be. They definitely got a few players that are really talented, but I kinda doubt they are ready for prime time.
