There's some serious Old Testament rain goin' on....and I am most displeased.

What's the usual Summerstage protocol during these kinds of conditions?

WE MUST REPEAT

Nick Apollo Forte (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 July 2004 02:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Just got back from Central Park -- was fun, albeit increasingly sloppy as the show progressed; seems like the short set they've been doing for the Nike thing is down pat (and killer: That's Good/Girl U Want/Whip It/Satisfaction/Mongoloid/Uncontrollable Urge for starters) but maybe they weren't used to stretching it out yet for a headliner. But they were in fine form, sounded great, Mothersbaugh's voice was strong, the guitars blazed, synchronized moves still in effect. and Booji made an appearance at the end for "It's a Beautiful World" though probably lolligagged around 5 minutes too long not saying much. Then the heavens burst as the show end and I swam home down 5th avenue.Stage banter included blaming the Republicans for the rain -- and speculation on how much we've devo-lved in 4 years. Lotsa people wearing the red domes in the crowd, they threw a bunch at people as well as ripping off their yellow Devo jumpsuits and tossing em out too.

Simply A-mazing. more later.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 July 2004 10:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Words are not my strong suit at the moment (h-u-n-g-o-v-e-r), but oof was this show ever worth it! Of course, being that my friend John and I had had nothing to eat since lunch prior to the event, by the time the boys were on, I was well droonk. Apologies to anyone I might've unsolicited accosted, offended and/or assaulted. Saw & hung out with Chris & Jody, and briefly ran into Geeta. The rain stopped long enough for the YYY's and Devo and then started again FURIOUSLY right after Devo's last number (a seemingly 75-minute rendition of "Beautiful World" with Booji Boy on vox). The whole show was way better than the Nike pics above would have you believe. They were fucking amazing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 July 2004 10:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Damn, was thinking of heading there, too! I envy, though with a twinkle in me eye....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Someone already posted photos of the gig: http://member.newsguy.com/~spudgun/photos/devo/index.htm

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, you can buy a CD of the show already: http://www.disclive.com/artist.php?artistid=81

$10 says this will show up on BitTorrent within a couple weeks. Everything does.

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

er, it's for downloadable perusal on the 80s and 2000 mp3 newsgroups. and very good it too.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 6 August 2004 07:42 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, just read the accompanying post with the mp3's. seems the chap is rather peeved at the disclive people.
"I wasn't going to post this because it was a startup company with a
good idea who made it, and Devo is a truly great band, but it turned
out to be kind of a ripoff so fuck them. They bill this as a limited
edition 2-CD set for $25 (+ $5 shipping), or you could just download
it for $18. So I paid my $25 and expected to be able to download it
immediately. Well, they claim they couldn't get the mixing done in
time due to heavy rains, so it was a week late getting online, which
would have been OK provided you got value for your money.

I expected that a 2-cd set of a concert would have at the very least
over 80 minutes of music. Most concerts go 90 minutes to 2 hours.
The actual total time is 67 minutes and 25 seconds, and over 5 minutes
of that is sound from an old video and a pre-recorded intro song,
bringing the total time to a little over 60 minutes of music. Granted,
that's all that Devo played, but why the fuck was it a 2-disc set?
And worse yet, when you download the CD's online, you get 192K MP3's
burned onto your CD with 2-second gaps between each song!!! So I'm
pissed off that they charged double for a single and I'm going to post
this now. These are the original MP3's that you download with their
software, not copies."

and to hear hot in here with are we not mean is quite something

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 6 August 2004 07:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

it was a fantastic show. well worth the $37.50 (advance) ticket price, and i will feel no guilt about downloading the mp3s. :-)

Money well spent.

i probably won't be around for the new york show but i could very possibly go to one the california dates.

So, is anyone going to the Hammerstein Ballroom show?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i'd love to, but it's so expensive!

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i was gonna go to bumbershoot, but now that's out. what do you think, alex?

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Bumbershoot is a crazy ass festival. Last year Pixies headlined, this year Devo? Could I think of any more dissimilar bands? Yeah I probably could but it's too much work.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:51 (eighteen years ago) link

And then the year before that it was R.E.M.!!

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:53 (eighteen years ago) link

devo had to cancel all their september shows, due to circumstances beyond their control, they said -- anyone know what this means?

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Not only that but they're not coming to the UK whatsoever, as far as i know.

Kid Twist (kid twist), Saturday, 30 July 2005 11:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I saw that (x-post), but have heard nothing specific. The Hammerstein tickets are expensive, and I hate the damn venue, but....y'know....fuck, it's Devo. I haven't been to many shows lately, so I could certainly rationalize me way into going. I doubt it's sold out (I couldn't help noticing new posters around town advertising it....I'm guessing ticket sales are sluggish).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 July 2005 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm guessing ticket sales are sluggish

I'm guessing most of their fans are using their freedom of choice to stay home and watch the 1980 live dvd.

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 21:37 (eighteen years ago) link

more yuks: they should call this tour "oh no! it's expensive"

three cheers!
they're yellin' again
three cheers!
they'll be at it to the end

so drink some big beers and go crazy tonight
they're all dressed up and they'll be gettin' it tonight
big swingers in double knits tonight
big babies gonna get in a fight
actin' crazy bustin' up the chairs
doubled over gettin' sick on the stairs
they know the limits 'cause they cross them every night
the dull sensations as it turns real hot
why, the guys in the back with their heads on the floor
surrounded by their buddies they're all hollerin' for more
whoa whoa whoa
it's mr. h's ballroom

party time turn the music up loud
party time lose your head in the crowd
yellin' laughin' tryin' hard to act smart
put 'em under pressure and you watch them fall apart
freeze! come on out of there
freeze! you ain't goin' nowhere
freeze! put your hands on your head
freeze!
it's mr. h's ballroom

whoa whoa whoa
it's mr. h's ballroom
