I like my Belstaff Pathmaster parka. Waxed cotton, the over-generous faux-fur hood piece comes off. Can find Belstaff stuff on sale for non-crazy prices.

if i were to ever get another big jacket i think i would like to get an orange one, as worn by carl sagan in cosmos or deniro in the deer hunter. they actually recently started making the deer hunter ones again (still made in usa iirc)

i also like this very technical japanese brand, very futuristic but also somehow understated. apparently this new “aurora” fill they use is crazy light and warm. but these things cost a million bucks and for climate reasons mentioned totally unnecessary

nah it’s a holubar. their marketing campaign is based off it being worn by deniro (it’s literally called the “deer hunter jacket”)

Spiewak was actually the first place my mind went -- I was coveting their parkas a couple years ago. Disappointed to find out that they don't seem to sell those anymore. You can find some discontinued ones on "Yoox" whatever the fuck that is.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 28 November 2022 22:46 (one year ago) link

xp

I look at Finisterre stuff a lot but they usually end up an almost-but-not-quite brand for me - stuff looks great on the site, the ethos is good & I think they have a decent all-round reputation (ok sort of 'Boden, but for The Guardian', but fine I'm 48 I'm comfortable with that).

I did buy one of their jumpers a few years back, but the fit wasn't great & the knit was a bit looser than I'd hoped - felt weirdly airy rather than chunky-cosy. Just one item though and, as I say, by reputation they're ok to good.

woof, Tuesday, 29 November 2022 10:35 (one year ago) link

Marine Layer parka came, it's like a B+ from me I would say - I like the look, color, material, feel of the lining, and features, but it's just a tad more sack-like than I was hoping. It's less the thickness of the coat than the cut that's the problem. On the fence but may keep.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 29 November 2022 14:43 (one year ago) link

hmm based on the size chart maybe I just need a size down

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 29 November 2022 14:50 (one year ago) link

Ok I got the other size - the Marine Layer parka is absolute junk, never buying something from them again, like lower quality than a Target house brand jacket. The stitching is abysmal - first time I stuck my hand through the sleeve I heard it rip loose. Then I tried to open the side pocket and the snap literally just came out - it didn't even rip, it was like on this square panel of plasticky fabric that I'm not even sure how it was attached.

I just bought this very nice Patagonia "Powder Town" thingy that is just right:

https://content.backcountry.com/images/items/1200/PAT/PATZA24/SMOBLU.jpg

(Pictured: not me.) That is "Smolder Blue" but there are other colors.

It has that magically weightless insulation and is not bulky or puffy or quilty at all.

Unlike most activewear it looks streamlined and non-fussy and reasonably dignified with casual clothing; I can wear it to the grocery store without feeling uber-tactical or self-conscious about my jacket calling undue attention to itself.

It also keeps my innards warm while at a bus stop. On a recent rainy morning I felt utterly cocooned. I can imagine shoveling the sidewalk in it, or going for a brisk walk in snowy woods.

Caveats: it is clearly meant for skiing, which is not something I usually do. There are some zippers and snaps and drawstrings and loops that I will likely never use, but it's good to know that they are there should I ever need them. They are discreet.

Godley and Creamsicle (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 5 December 2022 14:26 (one year ago) link

nice

Yeah Finisterre have some nice chunky sweaters but whenever i see brands like that selling parkas or whatnot i always feel like they're probably getting a little too big for their britches, like Tesla trying to make a luxury car, like, dog... we BEEN here

Tracer Hand, Monday, 5 December 2022 14:45 (one year ago) link

yeah youre not going to go wrong with the established parka guys

lag∞n, Monday, 5 December 2022 14:55 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I learned my lesson on that one.

I was actually just looking at a patagonia 3-in-1 that fits my description but it's like $650, which is still more than I wanted to spend (although I'm sure it will last a lot of seasons).

I was really happy with the Columbia I had for the last 6-7 years, had the zipper not broken. Just can't find one that's similar somehow. This one is pretty close, but I can't get past the leather patch. The black one at least it blends in, but I'd prefer the navy. https://www.columbia.com/p/mens-rugged-path-parka-1798911.html?dwvar_1798911_color=464

ll bean is another less expensive than northface jacket company worth checking out

lag∞n, Monday, 5 December 2022 15:21 (one year ago) link

conversely you could get a new zipper put on your old jacket

lag∞n, Monday, 5 December 2022 15:23 (one year ago) link

It's actually that the fabric the zipper is attached to is tearing - I was under the impression that's a hard repair, but I guess even if it costs me $50-100 it's a lot cheaper than a new coat.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 5 December 2022 17:03 (one year ago) link

yeah take it to a place and see what they say

lag∞n, Monday, 5 December 2022 17:16 (one year ago) link

i’m in a similar position to man alive now, with my trusty Army/Navy jacket starting to be just a little too far gone after countless little repairs. i guess it would be called a 3-in-1, removable hood, lined, pretty waterproof if not actually Waterproof. this Patagonia probably the most similar looking thing i can find:

https://eu.patagonia.com/gb/en/product/mens-isthmus-parka/27022.html

it is not actually super warm. (though nether is my current one.) i’m debating getting this thing or going for something a little more legit and a little less “street”

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 11 December 2022 14:41 (one year ago) link

i like that jacket

lag∞n, Sunday, 11 December 2022 15:05 (one year ago) link

That one's nice! I like the green too. I sort of wish it didn't have such a visible patagonia tag but not a big deal. Will consider.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 11 December 2022 16:53 (one year ago) link

I don't really want a "super warm" coat, I want something that would be comfortable in fall to moderate winter. I have a bulky down parka already that I use for the coldest days, but it's almost never called for.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 11 December 2022 16:54 (one year ago) link

There's apparently a 3-in-1 counterpart to it too, and the zip-out fleece is not bad
https://www.backcountry.com/patagonia-isthmus-3-in-1-jacket-mens?skid=PATZ9JD-CLATAN-XXL

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 11 December 2022 16:57 (one year ago) link

ahh so maybe my current jacket is a.. 2-in-1 or something. idk about these parkas that come with their own separate zip-out jackets. i feel like.. i already have a lot of layers and i will wear them if i need them, i don't need you, parka maker, just throwing in your own and making it all a bit more complicated and expensive

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 11 December 2022 17:30 (one year ago) link

looool 2 minutes from pulling the trigger on this thing - thank you, based ils men's crew - the Lovely Emma B informs me she has already bought me a parka for christmas which, let's face it, is a confusing thing to hear after you've spent like a week researching parkas

I didn’t want to say anything about Marine Layer upthread because you seemed good with it at first, man alive, but I worked down the street from the flagship store and from one visit, it was apparent that they were a company making clothes that looked okay but were constructed like shit and were insanely expensive. I remember looking at the shit stitching on some sweatpants, then at the price tag, and simply walking out.

I used to wear a Marmot two piece, with an ultralight puffy beneath a shell, but the zippers went out, so I am doing some research too atm— I might just buy a light puffy to put beneath my medium weight Patagonia rain shell and send the Marmot in for repairs. Always look into whether the company does repairs, as they often do!

Another thing for repairing these types of garments is Tenacious Tape, which keeps them waterproof but can easily cover up many rips and tears.

Patagonia also have this website for used/refurb coats which frankly, why wouldn’t you?
