What a terrific sound!

Pelham Blue could be a PK Dick character name.

Fuck off with your suburban $3599 guitar

calstars, Thursday, 24 November 2022 04:57 (one year ago) link

not necessary

Nah, at this point it’s a good schtick

one month passes...

argh, my local guitar store has listed a Troy van Leeuwen Jazzmaster in the original oxblood.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 29 December 2022 20:36 (one year ago) link

I want one of thoooooose

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Thursday, 29 December 2022 20:44 (one year ago) link

I can confirm that oxblood TvL's are 100% f-yeah and whatever sacrifices may come.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 29 December 2022 21:49 (one year ago) link

Midnight Wine and Aubergine are a couple of other similar Fender ox-blood colors that look good to me.

earlnash, Thursday, 29 December 2022 21:52 (one year ago) link

The lack of a bridge pickup does it wonders aesthetically

calstars, Thursday, 29 December 2022 22:11 (one year ago) link

Man I like that Tele bass too. The original P bass was one of those designs that was perfect right out of the gate.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 29 December 2022 22:31 (one year ago) link

Like nearly all of Leo's designs, it has to be said.

Vast Halo, Thursday, 29 December 2022 22:56 (one year ago) link

Thumb Rest is beneath the strings so I guess it was played by a lefty

calstars, Thursday, 29 December 2022 23:12 (one year ago) link

Nope, that’s the delightfully named “tug bar” where you hook your fingers for thumb playing.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 29 December 2022 23:37 (one year ago) link

Midnight wine w/tortoiseshell is 200% my fave color scheme.

Bonus points for satin or matte finish

Immodest Moose (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 30 December 2022 00:56 (one year ago) link

It’s both more than I want to spend and about $500 below market, with a nice case.

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 30 December 2022 00:58 (one year ago) link

They have reissued the 52 P-bass but never that model with the humbucker. I got to say after getting into Gibson basses, humbucker pickups are a bit under-rated on a bass. I'm guessing those might have some of the odd magnets like the other 70s Seth Lover style pickups Fender did.

Trower signature Strat is available in Midnight Wine. I'd like it more with a black pick guard. I think of building another parts strat that is the color I might use and then book match the headstock.

earlnash, Friday, 30 December 2022 01:30 (one year ago) link

If I ever get another bass aside from my Squier VI, the Reverend Wattplower II is top of the list.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 30 December 2022 01:52 (one year ago) link

My friend who is an amazing player has one, she raves about it. Played an SG bass for years.

well now the TvL JM is on hold ...

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 07:31 (one year ago) link

actually seems like a somewhat fair price?

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 18:01 (one year ago) link

i didn't say it wasn't fair i just can't be dropping $5000 on a guitar

also i'm liking gold hardware a lot lately for some reason

is it possible to tell your kids you smoke weed via purchasing a guitar?

wasnt meant to be aimed at your comment:) im surprised they put that on CL vs putting it on reverb for like half of what the other one is going for. way more eyes but maybe they dont want to deal with shipping/insuring it

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 18:10 (one year ago) link

I always kind of hated the white with gold hardware and elaborate headstock inlay gibsons but I saw an epiphone les paul custom in a shop last week and kind of loved the coked out 70's energy it radiated.

joygoat, Wednesday, 11 January 2023 19:28 (one year ago) link

96 were finished in Pellham Blue and only 48 were finished in Classic White ( much better looking color IMO).

lol no

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 20:44 (one year ago) link

xxp - the one up there is a joke, two Pelham Eastons have sold (per Reverb), one for $5500 and one for $5000.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 20:46 (one year ago) link

up there = up on Reverb

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 20:46 (one year ago) link

fair market price then

ive had my eye on this one for a year. even messaged the guy a few times about possible trades and bringing the price down. pretty much my ideal gibson

The bridge pickup on my Jazzmaster is getting more microphonic (a very effective radio with my Superfuzz too - but only one evangelical station) so I ordered a pair of Kinman noiseless Jazzmaster pickups to swap in.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 21:25 (one year ago) link

both

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 21:50 (one year ago) link

Bit confused milo, a noiseless pickup cancels electrical hum but won’t solve microphonic issues, which are usually the covers or pickguard vibrating? Or is it just a good excuse to buy Kinmans which are meant to be pretty great?

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 22:01 (one year ago) link

My understanding was that microphony is a physical issue with the pickup coils (and can be fixed by re-wax potting the pickup) - since I'd have to mail it to someone anyway for re-potting and wait for it to get done and come back I figured it wasn't worth the effort. Any pickup swap would have worked but the Kinmans sound good.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 22:38 (one year ago) link

only guitar adjacent but this would be a very stupid and fun thing to have (if they were still 1/3 this price like a few years ago)

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 11 January 2023 22:40 (one year ago) link

xp True that can be the case, but it's basically any acoustic vibration which makes the coils move and hence generates a signal responding to the sound. Potting reduces the coil's ability to move, but sometimes it can be that the pickup and pickguard are rubbing against each other, or the pickup cover is slightly loose. On Jaguars the claws are notorious for vibrating and that makes pickups microphonic too.
Kinmans are built so differently to a JM single coil that it's very likely they'd be unaffected by whatever is goosing the existing pickup. Apparently they sound great too, and even a shielded JM is a sea of noise so it's a good choice regardless!

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 12 January 2023 06:01 (one year ago) link

Love that Elliot Easton SG, looks a lot like the Rosetta Tharpe SG which I always coveted (except that one has three pickups).

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 12 January 2023 21:18 (one year ago) link

Brittany Howard has a great Inverness Green SG Custom (I think I saw an interview where she said Gibson gave it to her after she appeared on SNL or the Tonight Show or something).

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 12 January 2023 21:36 (one year ago) link

so the TvL Jazzmaster is an absolute peach

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 12 January 2023 21:54 (one year ago) link

I have neither use for nor money for another guitar but that Lake Placid Blue looks so good

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 13 January 2023 02:19 (one year ago) link

Kind of sucks that they went with the smaller headstock than the big CBS headstock though

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 13 January 2023 02:20 (one year ago) link

i find that incredibly frustrating, big headstock is absolutely right on those blingy mid-60s offsets
