Digging this Night Hag album, filthy and rotten death doom.

"Piach" was one of my favorite metal albums of 2018, and on first listen, this new one from Gorycz seems every bit as massive:

Also recommended for fans of Furia.

The title track from the forthcoming Obituary album Dying of Everything is out and it fucking rules:

I am unreasonably excited about this album.

Woods of Desolation, Australian melancholic black metal, are (or rather "is" - it's just one guy) back with a new album, out this week: https://woodsofdesolation.bandcamp.com/

his last one - released way back in 2013 - was awesome, imo. i thought that project was done, excited to see it back.

FYI because I know there are (or were?) some Hammers of Misfortune fans around here, but they've got a super limited CD version of the new album up on Bandcamp, 250 total copies and only 22 left as of my post.

I guess December is ok by my standards to start listening to metal from the year.
Close by Messa reminds me of Mandylion by The Gathering, that's nice.

Nabozo, Thursday, 8 December 2022 09:46 (one year ago) link

very late to the Phobophilic. definitely agree w/ people who said it has a little bit of that ole Demilich/similar bands sound, though the riffs aren't so angular.

just simple, good songwriting, atmosphere galore, plus my favorite lil 90s death metal trick of pairing a power chord riff with a higher string single note riff that propels it.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Thursday, 15 December 2022 02:41 (one year ago) link

why didn't anybody tell me this year's Castrator album was so good? all-female, feminist old school death metal.

top quality writing. not anything innovative, but simply a high quality album within the style, with the punch of early 90s death metal riffs, plenty of breakdowns too (but not the annoying kind). I have hit saturation point with death metal but this one was easy to like.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Saturday, 17 December 2022 02:18 (one year ago) link

man we got clubs around here but I guess our promoters don't offer a decent guarantee, these shows always skip us. I love Krisiun, it's not like they reinvent the wheel but I happen to like the wheel fine the way it is....maybe a drive to Richmond.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 22 December 2022 13:39 (one year ago) link

yeah Krisiun came here as an opener last year but it was 2 hours away on a work night and I had classes to teach that week. love pretty much all their albums and they are pretty great live (or were the one time I saw them in 2010).

Moonlight Sorcery snuck out another EP this month. The last one drew heavily from Nightside Eclipse, and this one feels a little more like Anthems, production-wise (hard to know if this was intentional). More of a dense neoclassical kind of sound. I think I much prefer the first EP but we'll see.

digging the new Mare Infinitum. theatrical bent to it for sure (which given my background is a good thing).

who is the female vocal on the second track? sounds like Bernadette Peters singing doom metal (a great thing!)

there should be a rolling bad politics in metal thread where those of us who find it grimly amusing can discuss Violet Cold and Venom Prison's latest dumbasseries and the rest of you can ignore it

made entirely of styrofoam (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 23 December 2022 13:37 (one year ago) link

Saw something about that on Twitter, decided not to even bring it here since Venom Prison are uninspired at best — I reviewed their second album for The Wire back in 2019, and it was unfortunate for them that it was paired with Misery Index's then-new one — and I'd never even heard of Violet Cold.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 23 December 2022 14:15 (one year ago) link

can someone actually post what it is that happened re: Venom Prison? all I can find is people talking about it and going 'yikes' with no details other than a 4 month old tweet, but as I understand it that's not actually it.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 December 2022 14:55 (one year ago) link

esp disappointing because Larissa positioned herself as a leftist and wrote against transphobia in the past. however, TERFs often identify as leftist and we've seen many such people drift to that cult so it's not a shock i guess.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 December 2022 15:00 (one year ago) link

Violet Cold thing seems more like a weird Kanye-esque breakdown

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 December 2022 15:10 (one year ago) link

cool, so now even the supposed good guys aren't good guys

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 December 2022 15:10 (one year ago) link

wow, this sucks, but now I don't have to keep giving that band chances because of their comparatively "good politics" at least. Very funny that the main person I see defending Larissa on twitter is a PR person from Season of Mist, who clearly can take the moral high ground here.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Friday, 23 December 2022 15:11 (one year ago) link

Violet Cold one is kind of incomprehensible to me.

I get the impression that he thinks he’s so obviously anti-fascist that everyone should give him the benefit of the doubt (?)

jmm, Friday, 23 December 2022 15:14 (one year ago) link

main people I see defending Larissa are TERFs, some of whom are actually responding to transgender women and telling them they're not women.

xpost yeah that seemed to be what he was trying to say ultimately. in the end he also tried to criticize actual Nazis that followed him due to the controversial "NSBM is the best metal" post but like....bruh what did you think would happen.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 December 2022 15:15 (one year ago) link

What an ugly week for the metal scene. As soon as I heard about the Season of Mist PR's views, I requested my removal from any and all of their press lists.

As for Venom Prison, there's nothing in metal more disposable than a "pretty good" death metal band. They're a dime a dozen, so I have no problem tossing them into the trash.
