Very depressing to be unimaginably wealthy and still pumping out this dreck.

corny money, corny problems

Too much botheration for me to be involved in.

Then Pomplamoose's upcoming Chuck Berry tribute, Too Pooped To Pomp, is for you!

five months pass...

Scary Pockets manages to be worse than Pomplamoose somehow. And here they are.. featuring Joe Bonamassa!

that is awful but it's a different vibe from pomplamoose, less cutesy and more berklee

na (NA), Monday, 1 May 2023 13:18 (eleven months ago) link

yeah true. There's something that really bothers me about the way they manage to play funk exactly "right" and it still doesn't sound funky at all, like an uncanny valley thing.

Scary Pockets is a bad vibe for sure, like a much smarmier Vulfpeck (they make me appreciate Vulfpeck more on every level fr).

I guess it's a net good that they've presumably introduced many people to the tasteful genius of Larry Goldings.

Is all their stuff covers(??)

it says right in the description that it's a cover band with a rotating cast of guest musicians so...

Sorry - not sure where that description is, I was looking at their catalog in Spotify.

whoops, I went to the instagram account’s main page and it’s the description there

I was interested in hearing this uncanny-valley funk, but less so when I realized they're cover albums with titles like Stank Face.

"Uncanny valley" probably gives it too much credit. It's not uncanny in any interesting sense. They kind of subtly have the vibe of a kids' band though. Jack has a lot to do with that.

I mean it's like the least "stank" it could possibly get

makes sense

at its root the pomplamoose stuff is an exercise in competence, it's just so dry to me. you could maybe do something interesting with that by taking it in weird directions but there's no weird there

which makes it a bizarre approach to play funk covers

mh, Tuesday, 2 May 2023 15:20 (eleven months ago) link

'haha we are playing funk, chortle'

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 2 May 2023 15:41 (eleven months ago) link

yeah, that too!

mh, Tuesday, 2 May 2023 15:42 (eleven months ago) link

Yeah as Jordan pointed out even Vulfpeck are charming by comparison, because at least they have this geeky obsessiveness that gets taken to extremes.
