Anybody not backing Brazil?Prospect of France being the first champions to get out of the group for 20 years only to face Argentina again also v tantalising
― nashwan, Saturday, 19 November 2022 13:32 (one year ago) link
if by "backing" you mean supporting then no, bunch of Bolsonaro-supporting cunts, hope they go out ASAP.my preference is for the whole thing to be cancelled, however if someone has to win it, I'll be glad if it's England because* If any world cup "doesn't count" it's this one, so bragging rights would be minimised* we would never have to hear another new version of Three Lions* If Rashford, Sancho and Saka can score the winning goals then it will piss off all the right people.

I’m supporting nobody but I do hope the legendary Portugal-Netherlands card record gets broken - and I’m feeling it in the bad vibe of this tournament, lads.
― after several days on “the milk,” (gyac), Saturday, 19 November 2022 14:35 (one year ago) link
in the VAR age it's harder to get away with anything so it would have to be just a total fuck-it brawl
― imago, Saturday, 19 November 2022 14:36 (one year ago) link
I passed a Paddy Power ad today on the way into Dublin airport that said “At least Sterling spent more time at 10 than Truss.” I’m indifferent to the fortunes of the English national team but I can guess the discourse.
― after several days on “the milk,” (gyac), Saturday, 19 November 2022 14:37 (one year ago) link
by that I mean players are generally better at not doing things that get them sent off, would guess that red card numbers this and last EPL season are down on the average
THAT SAID this last AFCON was an absolute red card bonanza, every time they went to VAR someone was sent off for some nonsense, so maybe, hopefully that'll be the case here too

I got into baseball this year and in baseball any time there’s a brawl there’s an understanding that everyone has to run up and involve themselves. FIFA should make that a rule for this WC. Game needs a goalbrawl.https://ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/90/2017/05/ap_nationals_giants_baseball.jpg?crop=0px%2C0px%2C3059px%2C1834px&resize=1000%2C600

I suppose I should support Japan as there's so many Japanese players at Celtic these days, in reality I don't give a fuck who wins it - as long as it's not Brazil. A team with as few Premiership players as possible would be welcome though.
― Fronted by a bearded Phil Collins (Tom D.), Saturday, 19 November 2022 15:06 (one year ago) link
our Japanese international, Yuta, had a season-ending ankle injury just a couple of weeks back. Our only other international is the mighty Sorba Thomas in the Welsh squad, but he won't get a start or if he comes off the bench he'll likely be played in an unfamiliar position and not let near any set-pieces.
― calzino, Saturday, 19 November 2022 15:26 (one year ago) link
feels absolutely wide open this time, every team has big flaws and nobody is really putting forward a compelling case ahead of anyone else. France clearly the best squad but aside from the strong suspicion that they'll implode again their biggest problem is their central midfield being ripped out. my money is on Spain and Argentina with a small each way on Uruguay but like everyone else I feel like I could come up with better reasons why they won't win than why they will

"if by "backing" you mean supporting then no, bunch of Bolsonaro-supporting cunts, hope they go out ASAP."
Lula won the election you know.
I'd much rather South America (Brazil or ARG) won it or an African team got in the semis-/final/won than fucking Europe again.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 19 November 2022 17:03 (one year ago) link
Also this might be the first of many winter world cups, given climate change.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 19 November 2022 17:07 (one year ago) link
Yes I know Lula won the election, thanks. I mean many of the more famous players on the team publicly support Bolsonaro, including Neymar who is apparently going to dedicate his first goal at the WC to him.
― link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 19 November 2022 17:16 (one year ago) link

Don't see " carbon neutrality" as a big deal. Climate mitigation goes beyond what happens in a month across three countries.
I mean if covering vast distances via air travel is an issue you wouldn't have a WC in the US would you?

Some chilling scenes from Brasil-Argentina.
Match delayed due to "riot" in the stands, but police were beating fans with batons. Messi took his team off field

Absolute joke to play this. 21 minutes, maybe eight minutes of play. Three cards, every foul the ref has to beg the players not to fight

Brazil struggling in qualification for the first time in a long while but they waited until there are six berths (plus a likely seventh via play-off) to qualify.
― nashwan, Wednesday, 22 November 2023 13:07 (five months ago) link
Brazil just never ever struggle in qualifiers. Three straight defeats 😱
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 22 November 2023 13:12 (five months ago) link
The match was called very one-sided in Argentina's favor but that ain't why Brazil lost. They had zero ideas. Lots of balls played to prospective runners who never made runs, poorly weighted balls, bad first touches.
Argentina weren't much better, didn't even score until after Messi subbed out
