Americans don't like station wagons — here's why

the late great, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:31 (one year ago) link

oh my mom had one of those when we were in late elementary / early middle school. weirdly tall long nissan sedan with fold down seats in the trunk. sort of a fake minivan

the late great, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:32 (one year ago) link

here what i think eurpoe usa japan et al should just form some intl group for auto standards then they can just sell the same cars in all the markets and can easily send us say an m3 touring or whatever for the 10 people who want it everyones happy

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:34 (one year ago) link

oh you want that 30 year old land cruiser model still being sold in australia here u go weirdo knock yourself out

last time i rented a car in the uk it was an audi wagon and it was in most respects the highlight of my life and it's been downhill from there.

I don't really get this -- so the Subaru Outback is a station wagon and the Forester is a crossover/SUV? I think of those cars as kind of indistinguishable and purchased by the same kind of people. (I drive a Forester.)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:55 (one year ago) link

imo neither are wagons, since neither have a third pillar (plus they have the clearance of an suv not a sedan)

i think the only brands currently making wagons are audi, bmw, benz and volvo. and as we already discussed they are all crazy expensive, which cuts into the budget for kobe steak and helicopter fuel

the late great, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:58 (one year ago) link

the outback is definitely longer in the back than a forester

, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 19:58 (one year ago) link

confusingly, the outback used to be available as a sedan

https://media.ed.edmunds-media.com/subaru/outback/2001/oem/2001_subaru_outback_sedan_limited_fq_oem_1_500.jpg

that car is sick iirc thats from when the outback was a trim level not a car so that was the legacy outback sedan, i know someone who has one

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:02 (one year ago) link

its the ll bean edition too just a bizarre car i love it

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:03 (one year ago) link

forester is a little taller and squarer than the outback but lol yeah they are comically similar

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:03 (one year ago) link

actually if you have, say, a 2002 forester, i think that might count?

but not a 2022 forester

the late great, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:03 (one year ago) link

i own a forester and i regular mistake other people's outbacks for foresters and vice versa.

imagine how much you'd get hit on if you had a prius wagon in brown

ah right, that was a weird time... reminds me of one of my grail cars, the impreza outback sport which has the best impreza nose imo combined with the practicality of a hatchback

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:08 (one year ago) link

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:08 (one year ago) link

i think the wrx badge wasn't used until the bugeye impreza

, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:09 (one year ago) link

actually i may be completely wrong

https://m.subaru.ca/WebPage.aspx?WebPageID=24128&Range=Forester&ModelYear=2022

^^ if you look at the photo of the chassis toward the bottom (next to the linkfor subaru global platform) it's a bit hard to follow but i think i can see a c and d pillar? so maybe it counts?

ah ok

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 20:10 (one year ago) link

https://www.hotcars.com/looking-back-at-the-first-usdm-subaru-wrx/

Let’s look back on that 2002 model; the first WRX to be sold in North America and, it can be argued, the one that made Subaru into a household name not only for dog-walking enthusiasts but for driving enthusiasts too.

but according to wikipedia impreza WRXs were sold in europe since 92 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Impreza#WRX

MG makes an EV station wagon

https://thedriven.io/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/DSC05081-Final-Reg-Plate-1-2400x1600-1.jpg

starts at £30K so not cheap but a good £10K cheaper than most other EVs

this car looks ugly as hell https://www.carwow.co.uk/news/5912/new-fisker-ocean-revealed-price-specs-release-date

but in reading about it i came across this sentence:

Fisker is also at work on developing solid-state battery technology, which it says would allow future electric vehicles to gain 500 miles worth of charge in as little as one minute.

ehh???

i after long deliberation have come to the conclusion that i just do not like how the popular huge wheels tiny greenhouse car profile looks, and works bad too

lag∞n, Monday, 5 December 2022 13:55 (one year ago) link

weird aero ev wheels just makes it worse

lag∞n, Monday, 5 December 2022 13:58 (one year ago) link

and then the huge wheels necessarily need a thinner rougher riding tire, and you cant see out the tiny windows

if you can really get one of these for 30k thats pretty sick, the battery tech is almost certainly vaporware tho

Renault, Geely and..... Aramco starting a new... *checks notes* combustion engine venture

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/renault-geely-look-bring-aramco-into-engine-venture-sources-2023-01-17/

Tracer Hand, Monday, 30 January 2023 12:04 (one year ago) link

One way to use those engines would be as a dedicated power generator to supply a charge to a hybrid car's battery system, rather than powering the vehicle directly when the battery charge was low, one of them said.

In that kind of arrangement, gasoline engines could be designed to operate in an "exceptionally efficient mode", one of the sources said.
