ed.b, Friday, 28 October 2022 15:21 (one year ago) link

I've not been that taken with the previous helmets I've heard and was thinking the same for this helmet, but hats and helmets off alike for the last track, I'm into that

saer, Friday, 28 October 2022 16:31 (one year ago) link

I agree! I was really excited about it when it first launched, then it went in a direction I find pretty boring (I’m not into that kind of thin, vaguely chiptuney house sound that’s been popular over the last few years) but the last two seem like a shift back to a fuller sound.

catching up but

possibly the wrong thread but this eden samara has really got its claws into me after a few listens. shanti celeste helped produce, kind of making me think of early nite jewel?

yes i love that track! did not know shanti celeste was involved.

that label (local action) has some gems on it

including this one which is probably even more outside of the usual for this thread. i played it and actually had some ratchet queens who only bounce to nicki minaj and megan thee stallion latch onto it.

hello party crew! as you may or may not know South Africa (Mzansi) is the world’s prime House Nation. it’s the only place in the world where six+-minute tracks informed by Mr Fingers, Chicago, acid and other house variations fill up the pop charts on the regular. did you folx even know a bobbin is a South African delicacy?

all of this to say that I’m hoping this poll I created might get the amapiano party fired up again on ILM, because we’re seriously logging… lagging behind. here’s your invitation - I hope you will all participate:

drowning in a blissful ocean of log drums and keys: 🎹🎹 amapiano a-z 🎹🎹 an ilm poll🕸

bobbins lovers, you have just a couple of days left to vote in this *key* poll:

i like that second one! great use of acid in a non-played-out way

speaking of, i always loved the imperial vibe of jam city’s “2 hot”, which always made me think of “haunted dancehall” era sabres doing trap music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHBzaWfqyGs

i just wished someone would redo it at a house / techno compatible tempo. well, someone on craigie knowes has! they threw in some 303 acid breaks and beamed it to the oort cloud and back for extra space dust

they’re actually pretty much the same tempo, but imo the jam city track has such a strong half-step feel that i don’t think it sounds good mixed with ukg or w/e

corrs unplugged, Wednesday, 16 November 2022 10:23 (one year ago) link

Is it Melchior under a different name? I had to put money down on the (single-sided only) vinyl as there's no digital option. £15 for one tune is steep, but I've listened to it about 5 times since last night.

It reminds me very much of Mungolian Jetset's 'Mungolian Jet Set Moon Song' for many many reasons

Its a reissue of Patrick Wilson side project, though its not clear it ever saw light of day at the time

Might be a good indicator as to why only one track made the reissue, though there's a certain charm to it

I can't find much infor about Patrick Wilson because there are quite a few people with the same name. What was his deal anyway?

saer, Thursday, 17 November 2022 14:25 (one year ago) link

some recent ones that I've been enjoying:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J3yGbpjt34

Benedek ft dreamcastmoe - Peace Of Mind - the whole EP this is from is excellent, but I like this one best - new jack swing orchestral hits over a Space Ghost groove and a trippy soul vocal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CEJrPz42ME

Kornel Kovacs ft Aluna - Follow Me - she's toned down the affectations for some warm, micro-house styled 2-step

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFS4kpgI7gI

Earth Trax - Dream Pop - having a very prolific 2022, this makes me think of Get Physical attempting "Stella" but with tougher drums

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHhePIDdWvU

Call Super - Swallow Me - very much from the same place as his Telephones remix from a few years ago, but with more weirdness including a bizarrely thrilling "drop"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYWNROkV9uc

Shanti Celeste - Cutie - I think she's a great DJ and you can tell she really gets dancefloor dynamics, this is probably the most "big-room" I've ever heard a Hessle Audio release sound but still bursting with personality in the filtered vocals

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwboXIA7Q3I

Pariah - Caterpillar - obnoxious bassline and unrelenting tension drums

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll6n6mSBPlQ

Genius Of Time - Sunswell - blissed-out deep house, "d'you like that?" yes very much so

boxedjoy, Sunday, 20 November 2022 18:21 (one year ago) link

shanti shanti shanti

she’s great and yeah that’s a good one, though seems to me hessle has been moving in a more commercial direction since pearson sound’s “alien mode” and (especially) pangaea’s “like this”

as far as stuff along that axis goes i was even more impressed w/ the new one by peach on psychic readings. still playing the galaxy girl ep to death, look forward to picking this one up

I like everything Two Shell put out this year and don't believe I've seen them mentioned here. Philip Sherburne covered them on P4k a couple times:

Since their debut, though, their music has become more colorful, awash in giddy UK garage rhythms, hiccupping R&B snippets, and unusually chipper major-key synths. They’ve got a particular thing for big, attention-grabbing samples—the kind that capture the ears of not just rapturous ravers but also copyright lawyers, which is presumably why some of the releases on their label Mainframe Audio have been vinyl-only.

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/two-shell-home/

Joy Orbison’s game-changing 2009 single “Hyph Mngo” is their obvious lodestar; you can hear it almost verbatim in the hiccupping vocal loop of the opening “Ghosts” and the fluttering synths of “Pods,” which follows. While it’s hardly an obscure pick—no song did more to mark the end of the dubstep era and the beginning of the amorphous stylistic free-for-all that followed—it’s been a while since anyone zeroed in so doggedly on the song’s ecstatic qualities. Virtually every element of Icons feels engineered to replicate the dizzy rush of nightclubbing at its most exhilarating, when a new sound gets its claws into you for the first time.

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/two-shell-icons-ep/

"Home" is my favorite track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WaJ7FnLN90

Indexed, Friday, 2 December 2022 21:21 (one year ago) link

i kinda liked the first livity single (access ep), not as into the second one (soulcity ep). i think access was the only livity singles i didn't grab out of that "run", sort of lost interest in the label around the early 40s so didn't grab soulcity either.

then i read that sherburne piece, which 100% put me off further investigation
