Busy with family obligations, I missed Hardway Connection , Jim Bennett, the Brothers 7 band and others @ Lamont's this weekend

Ms Jody “I’m Gonna Ride that Black Horse “ is so catchy that even if you think the double entendre lyrics are simplistic and cliched , you can’t help but be impressed

curmudgeon, Monday, 7 November 2022 05:11 (one year ago) link

Maybe I should post more southern soul videos

I need to figure my fave 2022 southern soul albums plus see what above website folks think

Wish the above folks spelled out their 2022 faves so that the rest of us with less time to listen, could check ‘em out. But they do list monthly charts

Willie Clayton seems to be good year in and out , every year

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 17:03 (one year ago) link

Clayton is kind of retro but has never had anyone Market his music to the Daptone Sharon Jones audience that would love it

Meanwhile for southern soul fans King George’s Keep on Rollin’ was likely the song of 2022. I forgot to put it on a nomination list for this here site’s ILM best tracks of 2022.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 January 2023 17:14 (one year ago) link

I heard Hardway Connection cover King George “Keep on Rollin “ live this past Saturday and the dance floor at Lamont’s got packed

Friday Feb 24 @ DAR Const Hall in DC - Capital City Blues Fest with Southern soul and Blues w/ Calvin Richardson, Pokey Bear, King George, Tucka, Lenny Williams, Theodis Ealey @ DAR Const. Hall

Be there or be square

My preview ( alas edited down for space) of tonight’s DC gig is in link.

Am told that this same bill which is doing gigs throughout the south, will also be in Atlantic City , the farthest north in US this show has been in the US for years.

curmudgeon, Friday, 24 February 2023 18:28 (one year ago) link

September Americana fest dates have been announced and I bet per usual they will ignore Southern soul or at best just have Bobby Rush doing a solo blues gig rather than one with his band and dancers that gets more soulful

curmudgeon, Friday, 24 February 2023 18:30 (one year ago) link

The show was kinda fun but also a bit disappointing. Vocals were sometimes too low in mix. Theodis E thread title song mentioned here sounded great, but most of his set was fairly formulaic bluesy southern soul. Lenny Williams sounded pretty good. Did 2 old Tower of Power songs he had written. King George was fun but his voice was not as soulfully strong live as on recordings. Audience loved Keep on Rollin. Pokey Bear sang over tracks not a band as did Tucka. Pokey was energetic and doing crazy dancing. At times reminded me of Flavor Flave! “My Sidepiece” got a big response and sounded great. Tucka sounded strong at times but kept stopping and starting songs in an annoying way. He weirdly did part of a King George song and then stopped; plus a Pokey Bear one too. Calvin Richardson did part of a Bobby Womack song, handed out roses to ladies, and tried to be a suave soulman , but his band was mixed too loud in the mix and his voice wasn’t strong enough . Pretty big crowd. Emcee was a bit raunchy and Redd Foxx like . There were only a handful of white people like my wife and I there, but emcee saw some white folks up closer and joked “Obama got elected and white people want to go everywhere.” But that was just one little aside. There was also an over age 60 dance contest done to Juvenile song Back That azzz up.

The tour will go as far north as Atlantic City in March

curmudgeon, Monday, 27 February 2023 15:15 (one year ago) link

Some of the same show participants will be at a fest in Manassas in April, and then Ms Jody and others will be at Lamont's in June. So suddenly more southern soul live in DC MD VA area then in awhile. Although Hardway plays monthly.

Yeah she was rocking that Big Cynthia

Hard to believe it’s been so long since the Gator had that spot

Heez, Saturday, 21 October 2023 19:21 (six months ago) link

Yep. RIP Gator. And still I meet folks who don't know what I mean by southern soul-- Friday was talking to a DC guitarist who plays rockabilly and honkytonk country and a vocalist musician guy who is into artsy punk and post punk and they were stumped re the current day names I mentioned

Liking the 2023 Robert Finley album Black Bayou. it's more bluesy soul than southern soul. He had gotten some attention by working with a Fat Possum label engineer, and also with an album produced by a Black Keys guy, and on America's Got Talent. He's a rural Louisiana guy who spent years in Europe in the 70s in the US army where he also played music.
