Goddammit.

Don’t throw those Les Rallizes Dénudés bootlegs away just yet! Original 1991 CD of “'77 Live”—an incredibly loud disc for its era—vs. the maximized/destroyed 2022 reissue: pic.twitter.com/qCarIw6vRW

That sucks to see, but as someone who doesn’t have the 1991 CD, I’ll deal. It’s not like I turn to LRD for a fine sounding audiophile experience anyway….

I thought the production trick with all that PSF/High Rise/Keiji Haino stuff that came up in the wake of Rallizes was to wallop everything into the red anyway, all the better to conceal the fact it was probably recorded on a malfunctioning reel-to-reel.

yeah but "into the red" is different in the analog realm vs the digital realm

and too much ruins it either way

Acid Seven, a bandleader and prankster who was a regular at Oz, recalled Mizutani interrupting his stoic silence at jam sessions only to utter existentialist riddles. He described Mizutani once taking a drag from his ever-present cigarette and proclaiming, “The smoke coming out of my mouth is extinguishing my ego,” with no further explanation offered.

By being totally uncompromising about the band’s sound, Mizutani effectively exiled himself from the Japanese music industry. Shime Takahashi, who played drums with the Rallizes in the mid-70s, recalled the band once working in a professional studio, only to find that the engineer never pressed record because he thought it was still rehearsing. Mizutani had been playing with the Rallizes for more than 20 years before releasing its three albums in 1991 — two sets of early recordings, and another double-CD live set of the band at its noisiest.

In a series of interviews this summer, Kubota said he had been working for months to sort through Mizutani’s collection, including numerous studio and live recordings.

“Now I have received the material for four full concerts and started working on it,” Kubota said. “It will be monstrous.”

four weeks pass...

Has anyone seen any news on the reissues? Pitchfork said the CDs would issue on 25 November, but the official website doesn't seem to have that info (it doesn't seem to be a well organised site).

The graphs above are not encouraging...

Bandcamp also says they will be shipping on or around 11/25, so fingers crossed.

Still waiting for my OZ Days Live to ship as well (looks like that was updated to 11/18).

digital releases out on Nov 29th, physical will be shipped in Jan/Feb 2023, I see on Bandcamp.

^ the three ex-bootlegs, that is

StanM, Friday, 25 November 2022 22:22 (one year ago) link

They're out - and 77 Live is brickwall central indeed. But so was the bootleg, to be fair.

The other two aren't as bad (first track on 67-69 studio & live is over the top too but the rest is better)

StanM, Tuesday, 29 November 2022 19:55 (one year ago) link

My old copy of ‘77 Live sounds much better than this reissue. (Downloaded WAVs from Bandcamp.) Keeping the earlier version for sure.

same :-(

StanM, Wednesday, 30 November 2022 10:24 (one year ago) link

Eh, I have been looking for a reasonably priced copy of '77 Live for years (certainly not paying the $130 they are currently going for), so I'll just have to deal with one that is slightly inferior.

This is the one to get. Nice packaging, really good sound.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 30 November 2022 15:57 (one year ago) link

Definitely more affordable! Saw that one at one point, but wasn't sure if it was the same material.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 30 November 2022 15:59 (one year ago) link

FYI - if you were like me and ordered any of the new CDs from Temporal Drift, the bandcamp page now says they won't be shipped until January 26, 2023

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 6 December 2022 23:37 (one year ago) link

Looks like we got another bonus release:

Bonus 12" of material from that couldn't be included on the '67-'69 Studio Et Live and Mizutani / Les Rallizes Dénudés LP reissues.

Trying again on the right thread this time...

Has anyone else that pre-ordered any of the three LRD CDs from Temporal Drift received a shipping notification or anything? Supposedly these were to be shipped out a couple weeks ago, but I haven't heard or seen anything.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 9 February 2023 15:30 (one year ago) link

Was gonna ask — I've heard nothing.

I ordered the 3LP of 77 Live and it says it's shipping tomorrow so we shall see.

Exciting news—The CD and LP releases of Les Rallizes Dénudés' '67-'69 STUDIO et LIVE, MIZUTANI / Les Rallizes Dénudés, and '77 LIVE are in production and nearly finished. CD-only orders should ship by mid-Feb. Orders w/ LP+CD should begin shipping by late Feb.

Fwiw, just thought to check Temporal Drift's Instagram and they posted 2 days ago that "CD-only orders are shipping now", so hopefully soon.

ha - good timing

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 9 February 2023 17:27 (one year ago) link

I received my CD of Mizutani yesterday with no prior shipping notice.

bryan, Thursday, 9 February 2023 17:34 (one year ago) link

FYI, I got an email back from the label:

"We are in the process of packing and shipping hundreds of orders right now. Yours will ship on Friday. Tracking will be live once USPS scans the package."

There was a tracking number included. So I expect it'll arrive next week.

The 3LP oclear vinyl pressing of '77 Live is sold out at the Temporal Drift bandcamp but there still appear to be copies of a red & black vinyl pressing available on Light in the Attic.

lord of the rongs (anagram), Monday, 13 February 2023 09:19 (one year ago) link

Hmm, and yet another pressing on red & black "splatter vinyl" available on Third Man Records. This is getting silly.

lord of the rongs (anagram), Monday, 13 February 2023 09:24 (one year ago) link

Yeah, finally got a shipping notice early this morning.

So far Mizutani has been the real revelation for me, I'd never heard that one before and all the other bootlegs I'd had were focused on the blown-out guitar cacophony.

The version of "The Last One" on Mizutani reminded me of Dadamah, which is some of the highest praise I can offer. The acoustic tracks on the first side are shockingly delicate.

Les Rallizes Dénudés just announced CITTA' '93, check it out here: https://lesrallizesdenudes.bandcamp.com/album/citta-93

“We are honored and thrilled to share with you the first-ever release of CITTA’ ‘93 by Les Rallizes Dénudés, the first entirely new album to be released as part of the archival and reissue campaign launched in 2021 in collaboration with The Last One Musique. Containing in its entirety a recording of the band’s legendary 1993 performance at Club Citta in Kawasaki, Japan, CITTA’ ‘93 is a tour de force for this seldom-heard era of the Rallizes, destined to be a future classic alongside their definitive showcase ’77 LIVE.

Pre-orders are now live on our Bandcamp, where a limited edition 3LP Silver Vinyl edition is available, along with 3LP Black Vinyl and 2CD sets. Every vinyl order will be bundled with a newsprint poster featuring an iconic photo of Takashi Mizutani by Takehiko Nakafuji, while supplies last.”

Swear I still have a burnt CD of that '93 from my days on slsk. It's fantastic if that's the same one and it's available.

This Citta 93 set is fantastic. I don't have the 13CD bootleg mentioned by StanM above so it was all new to me. The version of The Last One is epic.

So apparently BAUS '93 is coming - this is where CITTA '93 showed up for Japan only before Temporal Drift picked it up for the rest of the world. Rumors are pre-orders coming in November for early 2024 release:

oh nice, with a DVD as well - thanks for the news! :-)

StanM, Monday, 2 October 2023 18:44 (seven months ago) link

Google Translate calls this band the Naked Rally's :-)

I'm guessing it's not going to be a live video recording of the show from beginning to end, if they describe it like this: "The first production edition of the CD also comes with a DVD containing a video work created by Akira Uji, who used to be in charge of visual production for Rally's, using videos taken of the stage performance that day."

StanM, Monday, 2 October 2023 18:51 (seven months ago) link

Yeah, working my way through Citta '93 right now, absolutely incredible. Great quality.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 October 2023 17:07 (six months ago) link

The recording quality is pretty amazing, but...I really like the ultra-blown-out, Mainliner/High Rise-ish sound of '77 Live, and other Rallizes stuff, both earlier and later, that's more conventionally "psychedelic" doesn't really do it for me in the way their skull-squashing sonic attack material does.

read-only (unperson), Wednesday, 11 October 2023 17:25 (six months ago) link

Yeah I can totally get that, this is definitely "cleaner" sounding as compared to '77 Live and older boots. But I kind of like hearing it all a little more clearly and I think this epic "The Last One" still bulldozes my brain and ears.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 October 2023 17:26 (six months ago) link

Just got the notification from Temporal Drift that my Citta '93 vinyl has shipped.
