I wonder if, especially in the case of some of these places like The Shop, there was an element of hope going into it like, "maybe we can bring Kanye back down to earth a little with the right conversation". Yeah I think our civilization is malfunctioning. These three people are actually insane and very impulsive, constantly saying things that make no sense. And they are the most famous and celebrated Americans.

They’re not just bad people, they don’t just support destructive things and cater to people’s worst impulses (although these things are true). That much would be understandable. They are chaotic and unpredictable, forcing the public to make sense of their weird actions and statements. And this latter piece is the most important part, as attention — sheer attention — has become the most valuable commodity.

IN ADDITION TO railing against “the Jewish media,” Kanye West spent some time on Drink Champs regurgitating what he gleaned from the George Floyd “documentary” made by alt-right firebrand Candace Owens, his partner-in-White Lives Matter. Most notably, West said that fentanyl, and not being suffocated by a police officer’s knee, caused Floyd’s death.

“I watched the George Floyd documentary that Candace Owens put out. One of the things that his two roommates said was they want a tall guy like me, and the day that he died, he said a prayer for eight minutes,” West told Drink Champs. “They hit him with the fentanyl. If you look, the guy’s knee wasn’t even on his neck like that.”

(During the trial against Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin, medical experts testified that even though Floyd had traces of fentanyl in his system, Floyd died from a lack of oxygen caused by the knee on his neck, which a coroners’ report affirmed in deeming Floyd’s death a homicide.)

West then compared Floyd, whose May 2020 death by police helped sparked the Black Lives Matter movement, to the late designer Virgil Abloh. “This white company Louis Vuitton is now making statues of him as a martyr, and we don’t know why exactly [he died], they said it was cancer,” West said.

Immediately after his Floyd comments, West asked N.O.R.E., “Can you even run this interview?,” noting how his appearance on HBO’s The Shop was axed over “hate speech and extremely dangerous stereotypes.” After being uploaded to the Revolt TV website Saturday night, West’s Drink Champs interview was pulled late Sunday morning.

I also just find it generally ominous that someone as famous as him is embracing far-right extremism & racism & advocating genocide so publicly, hard not to conclude these ideas are spreading and sticking in unpredictable ways

It's hard to get useful stats on Parler, but as tipsy alludes, it doesn't seem to have that big of an active user base: <2 million from one site I looked at (Twitter, among the least popular major soc med, has something like 300m). Not sure how that compares to Truth.

I agree this might not do much to increase users and it sounds like an unsurprisingly dumb decision, but I worry that Kanye appeals to both more and different kinds of people than, say, Candace Owens. idk, I'd love to find out that I'm worrying over nothing, but sometimes I think about how much of this new far right movement started with gamergate and I feel dizzy
