Going to proceed with Punk tracks poll tomorrow unless someone with more seniority in requesting a poll would like to step in this weekend.

mig (guess that dreams always end), Saturday, 8 October 2022 15:03 (one year ago) link

Since that one is delayed is anyone willing to run a poll or even taking over that poll? I was thinking about running it but that would be a disservice as my knowledge in Punk has too many gaps.

Bee OK, Thursday, 20 October 2022 04:23 (one year ago) link

i would totally run a sparklehorse poll right now if there is enough interest

i've got sparklehorse fever, and the only cure is to systematically go through the entire discography repeated times and administer a ballot poll

Karl Malone, Monday, 24 October 2022 21:56 (one year ago) link

That's a poll for which I could only really submit a ballot from one record (Vividixie) but would appreciate the rollout and enforced poll-result listening.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:21 (one year ago) link

yeah, i feel confident that you'd love the rest! i started with It's a Wonderful Life in high school, and only really listened to Viva closely for the first time a few weeks ago! since then i have listened to it many times. it rules.

one intriguing thing about a Sparklehorse ballot poll is that i really have no clue what the consensus is on either the album or which songs are the ones that everyone knows. the first couple albums have songs that sound like they should have been hits during a time when "alternative music" was still a thing. but then i'm youtubing and i see them making their "american television debut" on craig kilbourn, playing "it's a wonderful life", and you can just see that some of his most pop-friendly hits had been slept on

one reason NOT to do a Sparkhorse poll, though: maybe there just isn't enough. 4 albums (Viva, Good Morning Spider, It's a Wonderful Life, Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain), In the Fishtank with Fennesz, and Dark Night of the Soul (which I need to listen to more, it's hard to categorize). Some singles, EPs. But maybe that's not enough.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link

you could add the two dancing hoods albums to a sparklehorse poll.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 20:14 (one year ago) link

yeah...very diminishing marginal returns there, though, i think. i'm not a huge fan of what i've heard. they are definitely catchy and replacements like at some points, but i just finished watching the 1998 dutch documentary on youtube and he refers to them as "that pop band" or something like that and relays a story about how he boring he ended up finding that, how leaving that behind led to his first "good music"

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 21:36 (one year ago) link

yeah, they were a very different band. but they had their fans, and maybe there's a discovery or two still waiting to be found, or at least a connection to be made between his "that pop band" roots and what he went on to do? just a thought!

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:17 (one year ago) link

oh for sure! sorry, i didn't mean to seem like i was shutting it down. i would definitely include that, and if nothing else be interested in what everyone's favorite songs were from the pre-sparklehorse days! i'm still very much in learning mode and haven't listened to some stuff yet, so i'd be open to absolutely anything that involves linkous.

it's sad, because way back in the day, the way i learned about sparklehorse was through radiohead. the "wish you were here" collab. but the thing was, back then it was the audiogalaxy era for me, which meant lots of freely downloaded songs of unknown provenance and sometimes fakes. so when i heard "radiohead' doing wish you were here, with Linkous' voice, i immediately thought "false". now, of course, listening to it i hear that it's radiohead (or at least some of them?) playing instrumentally while linkous sings. to my warped radiohead-obsessed mind of the time, i could not fathom that thom yorke would let anyone else sing, other then himself. so when I heard heard Linkous' voice it just sounded like "fake-Thom" to me. good lord i was fucked up.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:27 (one year ago) link

i think i am just going to post a top 15 on a sparklehorse thread and be done with it

FUCK IT

SUSPENDED
Please Poll Me: ILM ballot poll #116 punk tracks1975-1984 LOBBYING AND DISCUSSION!!

Since that one is suspended is anyone willing to run a poll or even taking over that poll?

Bee OK, Friday, 4 November 2022 02:22 (one year ago) link

The reason for the bump is that I am really hoping ILM can do one more of these before the year is out. If no-one steps in I might go ahead and start something next week. It won't be the Super Furry Animals tho because of the time and effort I'm going to put into that one. I'm not willing to do that one quite yet. The other one I was thinking about running is The Jesus and Mary Chain but not really in the mood for it at the moment. I do have a back up plan if no-one steps up here in the next few days.

Bee OK, Friday, 4 November 2022 02:26 (one year ago) link

I'm going to add The National to this list. I think a deep dive for this band will be fascinating. I'm not nearly up to date with them but seeing them live for only about an hour was great. It was a rooting festival type of thing with many bands. This poll The National (Poll) is what convinced me to add them. It won't be for years tho and if anyone wants to take the baton for me that would be fine too.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 November 2022 03:30 (one year ago) link

I will run Super Furry Animals in 2023, I won't delay that one much further.

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 November 2022 03:32 (one year ago) link

xp you can (seriously) mark me down for 'mr. november' at number one and zeros the rest of the way

mookieproof, Saturday, 5 November 2022 03:33 (one year ago) link

I'd run a Taylor Swift poll if someone else handles images.

Indexed, Thursday, 17 November 2022 15:36 (one year ago) link

don't we do one of those every year?

rob, Thursday, 17 November 2022 15:45 (one year ago) link

Albums, probably, but I don't think we've ever done a proper, discography-spanning tracks poll.

Indexed, Thursday, 17 November 2022 15:52 (one year ago) link

lol rob

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Thursday, 17 November 2022 15:54 (one year ago) link

xxp no that's the CRJ poll.

IT'S A JOKE DONT FLAG ME

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 17 November 2022 15:56 (one year ago) link

I made poll images in PowerPoint, thanks whoever it was itt that recommended that, it was really a lot easier than I anticipated.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 17 November 2022 15:57 (one year ago) link

yep, that's how I made the Wilco poll images. Obviously doesn't do anything close to what the graphic design programs can do but it's surprisingly serviceable!

Indexed, Thursday, 17 November 2022 16:10 (one year ago) link

i would do a black sabbath poll

i am mainlining sabbath regardless of whether or not anyone replies

Karl Malone, Friday, 18 November 2022 20:13 (one year ago) link

In.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Friday, 18 November 2022 20:39 (one year ago) link

Yes

im a beacon of light (Spottie), Friday, 18 November 2022 21:06 (one year ago) link

sweet! well, i'm up for doing it whenever there's an opening in the schedule

Karl Malone, Friday, 18 November 2022 21:55 (one year ago) link

in the schedule of ballot polls, i mean. my personal schedule is looking pretty good

Karl Malone, Friday, 18 November 2022 21:56 (one year ago) link

You can go after the Police if you like. Hard to believe ILM hasn't done Sabbath yet.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 November 2022 00:01 (one year ago) link

great, that sounds good!

and yeah, i was very surprised as well.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 19 November 2022 00:07 (one year ago) link

Is a Sparklehorse poll dead or can I add it for later?

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 November 2022 06:09 (one year ago) link

I would vote, BTW

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 November 2022 06:09 (one year ago) link

two weeks pass...

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra) at 5:12 4 Dec 22

Would be cool if they polled all the art critics to find out what are the 100 best paintings.

I'd read that poll.
how doable is this? I mean not "all the art critics" but "all the ilxors" of course.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Sunday, 4 December 2022 14:12 (one year ago) link

Definitely be interested in taking part in this.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 4 December 2022 15:16 (one year ago) link

three weeks pass...

Voting is open for the ILM EOY Poll: ILM's 2022 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / VOTING THREAD

two weeks pass...

I don't have time to run it, but currently reading the J Dilla bio, Dilla Time, makes me think a poll of his productions would be good.

Chris L, Sunday, 22 January 2023 23:35 (one year ago) link

^ That would be cool IMHO!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 23 January 2023 01:51 (one year ago) link

Honestly, I think Prince could use a redo ballot poll and I'm happy to collect ballots for that (unless we simply don't redo).

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Friday, 3 February 2023 19:36 (one year ago) link

a niche pursuit, i'm sure, but tbh we need a RUSH poll

mookieproof, Friday, 3 February 2023 20:26 (one year ago) link

I was thinking of a Best Canadian Song poll for some point down the road (i.e., Canadian artist, not about Canada...)--we're so overshadowed by the States and Britain--but the turnout might be low, I don't know. We're not just Neil Young and Joni Mitchell!

clemenza, Friday, 3 February 2023 20:43 (one year ago) link

I'd turn out!

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Friday, 3 February 2023 21:01 (one year ago) link

I'd vote, but I'd be afraid of very "CBC" results.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 3 February 2023 21:05 (one year ago) link

I was counting in my head: "me, you, Thermo, halfway...uh..."

clemenza, Friday, 3 February 2023 21:05 (one year ago) link

i'd be in

mookieproof, Friday, 3 February 2023 21:07 (one year ago) link

I'd throw my considerable influence around so we get "I listen to CHUM!" circa-1972 results.
