That Reef song is a bit of a guilty pleasure ngl

Trans Europe Express could be a good trans song too. Trans women are known for their love of trains (seriously, it's a thing. And I fucking love trains)

paolo, Saturday, 8 October 2022 08:01 (one year ago) link

Makes sense, given the documented correlation of trans/autism and trains/autism. Trans/trains must be somewhere on the Venn diagram.

I'm an enby trans woman and I've got to say that's my favourite Kraftwerk album lol.

The Ghost Club, Saturday, 8 October 2022 09:23 (one year ago) link

Also love trains. I feel like my 'BPD people who love How It's Made' support group that I always threatened to run has a similar intense vibe to the trans/autism/trains thing.

Kind of want to rep for my band in this thread but I might have done that too much across the board and don't want to come across like a dickhead - there's one song in particular that def belongs here, though, arrgh.

emil.y, Saturday, 8 October 2022 13:16 (one year ago) link

I'm trans and I'm giving you permission to rep for your band

I also had no idea that people with BPD love How It's Made, and I work with quite a lot of people who have BPD

paolo, Saturday, 8 October 2022 13:20 (one year ago) link

Ah, go on then. This is one of the ones sung by our drummer, it's the song that's most about trans experience (but is also about other stuff too). I should probably say 'my old band' now, as we played our last show last week. RIP us.

The How It's Made stuff is partly a joke, but a lot of us did get deeply into it. My theory is that it's weirdly calming so a good way to help quieten down that constant emotional excessiveness.

emil.y, Saturday, 8 October 2022 14:34 (one year ago) link

i often dream of trans

Kate (rushomancy), Saturday, 8 October 2022 14:38 (one year ago) link

That song is awesome and absolutely belongs in this thread! Also I hope you're coping OK with your BPD because I know it's very difficult

paolo, Saturday, 8 October 2022 15:01 (one year ago) link

Ah, thank you. Not coping amazingly, but a lot more stable than I have been. I haven't had access to therapy for a while, so my coping mechanism is basically "hide away from everything and everybody so I don't hurt them/get hurt", which is pretty unhealthy in itself.

Changing the lyrics of songs to make them about trans stuff should definitely be a sign that You Might Not Be Cis

Cha Cha Slide but it's "Everybody might be trans"

Not punk, but a great read on trans sound engineer and lesbian feminist pioneer Sandy Stone:

seven months pass...

Hey trans people! any of you found that your musical tastes have changed after taking hormones? because I have found myself listening to music that is more upbeat/poppy since i began that process. I mean I don't think it's the mones themselves that are changing my musical preferences, it's that I'm feeling so much happier and that's changing the music I listen to. so i guess it's an indirect link there

ava (paolo), Saturday, 3 June 2023 08:00 (ten months ago) link

if any of you have been wondering why i haven't started a grime and uk rap thread this year (and i'm sure you've all been desperate to know) it's because i just feel too happy to be sat around listening to fucking drill

ava (paolo), Saturday, 3 June 2023 08:03 (ten months ago) link

having said that the music i make myself is still towards the more moody end of the spectrum so fuck knows what's going on there haha

ava (paolo), Saturday, 3 June 2023 08:04 (ten months ago) link

the only joyful music made by trans people i can think of is by eris drew and octa octo. anyone else got any recommendations?

ava (paolo), Saturday, 3 June 2023 08:21 (ten months ago) link

That is super interesting!!

beverly glenn copeland makes very joyful music.

stirmonster, Saturday, 3 June 2023 19:28 (ten months ago) link

yeah my music tastes did change after i started hormones, i really fucking hate frank zappa now for instance haha. but yeah i... it's complicated for me because a lot of it was that i tended not to listen to music by women because i felt like i didn't have the right to women's experiences. and now when i listen to music i'm sort of catching up on that.

regarding trans punk there's a lot of it, i just today ran across in my youtube subs the guy who did the cover art posting the public phone school record and i went down a little bit of a rabbit hole from there and found this split where one side is by LiliXElbe

https://lilixelbepowerviolence.bandcamp.com/album/split-w-terminator-x

i don't know if they're trans or not and i'll be honest i have no idea what any of the lyrics are, i like powerviolence but i can't for the life of me make out the lyrics. i don't know. i have a whole pile of it but one of the other things that's happened is that i got more extraverted and i feel all these emotions and i was really obsessed with music because it was the only way i could feel anything. and once that stopped being the case i stopped listening to music, i spent a couple years just listening to dead bootlegs. over a year ago now when i broke up with my ex i put _dots and loops_ in my car and i've just been listening to that any time i'm in my car on repeat since then.

a lot of my favorite trans music is music that's not actually trans, before transgender dysphoria blues there wasn't a lot of trans music made by trans people. i haven't ever actually heard jayne county. i probably should sometime. so one of my favorite songs that's not trans is a song by underground resistance called "transition". it's not about gender transition but the lyrics super fucking apply and it's really inspirational to me.

in trans community there are a lot of women really into metal, and i think that's super cool but i have to be in the right mood for metal. and trans guys are into like folk and stuff. the meme about trans music, i'll just put the text here:

music made by transmascs:

i just wish i was a bug, the world would be so much more mine

*ukulele solo*

music made by transfems:

i am smoking weed

*the loudest noise you have ever heard*

i actually _don't_ smoke weed, but i'm _very_ much in the minority, and it's just about the only transfem stereotype i don't conform to.

actually here's a deep cut, a band by a '90s band called "bitesize"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMXj7iqNIGs

idk what genre, maybe it's a little noise-pop, a little gbv, it's something or other

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 4 June 2023 17:05 (ten months ago) link

they billed themselves as "power pop" (they lasted through about 2001-2002)

sarahell, Sunday, 4 June 2023 17:10 (ten months ago) link

Just discovered Evelyn Gray recently when she came through town. Not punk, more experimental indie with emo/hardcore flourishes or something, but pretty cool stuff.

https://evelyngray.bandcamp.com/

ahhhhh it's so frustrating, there's so much fantastic trans music coming out of pdx and i don't know hardly any of it!

in my circle tami t is pretty fucking big, not "punk" at all but pretty relatable trans stuff, some of it's upbeat, some is less so

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 4 June 2023 17:36 (ten months ago) link

there's also the truly amazing Dorian Wood (link is to the first album of hers that I heard)

and this is Moira Scar's earlier band

oh thank you for the recs folks! i had never even heard of beverley glenn copeland but that is exactly the kind of shit i need in my life rn!!

ava (paolo), Sunday, 4 June 2023 20:28 (ten months ago) link

yeah in my experience A LOT of transfems are into punk/metal/noise and I am absolutely sure that i would have been one of them if i'd transitioned when I was younger. Am doing this at the ripe old age of forty and sometimes i feel sad that i didn't realise when i was younger but there are positives to it too, ie my teens and twenties were enough of a shitshow as it was without having fucking transitioning in the 90s and 00s thrown in there as well. so one of the positives of doing it now is that i've had a lot of therapy and dealt with quite a lot of trauma so am in a much better place to transition now!

but yeah, there's a reason so many transfems are making angry music and i would be joining them if i was a trans teen now. But as it is I just feel really happy, medical transition feels like microdosing mdma, not even joking! so am not really in the mood for powerviolence but I appreciate the suggestion :) :)

Psychic TV - i forgot about them! I'm not sure if I've ever actually heard any. was genesis out as genderqueer or whatever in the tg days??

Moira Scar and her earlier band - feeling it! esp the newer stuff, coldwavey vibez

Tami T and Dorian Wood - also feeling it!

no, that came later

i forgot about the ephemeron loop, she's trans, saw her last year and she has a super live show, not the kind of thing i fancy listening to on a summer eve tho

ava (paolo), Sunday, 4 June 2023 20:45 (ten months ago) link

i got more extraverted and i feel all these emotions and i was really obsessed with music because it was the only way i could feel anything. and once that stopped being the case i stopped listening to music

oh wow, i don't listen to music any more or less than i used to but i do find that songs hit differently now, the emotion is more intense. had a wee hormonal milestone the other day when i started crying out of nowhere listening to a song, i've been told that i'll get tearful at adverts and films but am yet to experience that yet
