Knew from the title that it was probably a monarch, but had to stumble around trying different kings till I focused on the fact that he was King of both Spain and England, which led me to Queen Mary, which led me to Philip II.

What clue was that?
Assming we're talking about the same redactle, "blueshift" was in the available text. So I typed "redshift" just assuming it'd be in some sentences, had no earthly clue it was the answer.

got today's (181) in 5 somehow, guessed ii straight away, then king and france, and my next two stabs in the dark ended up on target.

That was EXACTLY how I did it!

I got that it was a spanish king and II fairly quickly, but fuck do I know bout spanish kings, so I had to cheat and google which one it was :( lol.

I couldn't get 180 at all - had to cheat. If I have heard that term before I didn't remember it or know what it meant.

Ha I'm so used to it in Spelling Bee I defaulted to the american spelling anyway.

But yes, i'd like to see this game not count typos/spelling mistakes, or cramming an accidental two worder into one word.

That'd be pretty difficult since the topics will invariably have names that a typical spellcheck would mark as misspelled.

61 today but cheated, got the second word relatively quickly but could have played until Christmas and not got the first one.

I didnt get it, and even cheating/googling took forever. Never heard of it, it feels extremely niche.

I have heard of it, even thought of the first word seven guesses in after guessing godel, no idea why I didn't enter it.

OK so I have worked out WHAT today's thing is in a general sense, but I have no idea what it is called or where it is located, aside from vaguely in "central asia".
