Yeah it's weird that it's back so soon (haven't watched any of the new season yet)

Vinnie, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 12:50 (one year ago) link

I saw a couple of eps and they were solid/more of the same/meta/dark/funny/nihilistic/sentimental. But then I forgot it was back again, lol.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 13:18 (one year ago) link

the one i saw, probably the 1st episode, did feel like fan-service and nothing else.

koogs, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 13:45 (one year ago) link

i was hoping that the resolution to season 5 would've stemmed the fan service a bit. still gonna watch tho

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 16:35 (one year ago) link

to me, the plot-heavy episodes where a million things are happening (like ep 1) are so disappointing. so much writing and animation effort to make something overwhelming and unpleasant and usually not even that funny. I've liked all the other episodes so far, and the night people one was actually my favorite

Vinnie, Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:31 (one year ago) link

we're definitely looking for different things out of this show i think. at this point i'm happy for it to be a self referential nihilistic sci-fi romp that breaks the fourth wall while doing teraflop twilight zone bullshit.

I mean, there's a good chance I'm in the minority on that opinion. My favorite eps have tended to be low on overarching plot, low on sentimentality and seriousness, high on sci-fi concept

Vinnie, Thursday, 6 October 2022 03:01 (one year ago) link

The Fortune Cookie one was pretty funny.

earlnash, Thursday, 6 October 2022 04:10 (one year ago) link

i think i liked the "summer does a die hard" episode best fwiw

two months pass...

^finally watching now and lolz, love Grandsonism as well

This season had some inspired episodes, a step up from the previous season. Finale was great

I had only watched the first episode of this show before yesterday. My son had shown it to me when he was in middle school and I was thoroughly repulsed and never went back for more. For whatever reason, yesterday I decided to give it another chance and threw a few more episodes on. I'm still skeptical that I'll find much value in it, but my plan was to keep trying to engage. Then as soon as I flipped it off, I went to check the news and saw the news about his domestic violence.

i watched a couple episodes and fucking hated it

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 January 2023 15:22 (one year ago) link

I generally like the show and often find it to be funny and clever, but sometimes only fitfully. Afaict it def. has more than its share of gross meme-lord fans, though. As does/did South Park, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 January 2023 15:53 (one year ago) link

I watched it for a while hoping it would move past the nihilism and edginess but despite a couple of teases it never followed through so I gave up after a couple of seasons

it's less overtly misogynistic than something like family guy but there is a pervasive sense of unexamined male geekdom to the whole thing which is offputting and while I wouldn't have guessed this it's not a massive surprise unfortunately

your original display name is still visible (Left), Friday, 13 January 2023 15:57 (one year ago) link

south park is indefensible but can also be a lot funnier. neither is as clever as it thinks it is

your original display name is still visible (Left), Friday, 13 January 2023 16:00 (one year ago) link

it honestly did feel like it moved past a lot of the edgelord-ness in this sixth season (with some notable exceptions), and while it feels like harmon is responsible for most of what makes the show great, roiland doing all the voices will make it hard for me to watch this again

sault bae (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 January 2023 16:01 (one year ago) link

Looks like he was first charged in May 2020, arrested and released in that August, then arraigned in October 2020. Was this reported two years ago?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 January 2023 16:07 (one year ago) link

it has been transitioning into worldbuilding as coin of the realm and has honestly been doing a fairly good job of it.
this case is, as you said, not great

First I've heard of this case, very disappointing. I've enjoyed the show up to and including the most recent season but I'm probably off the train now

Vinnie, Friday, 13 January 2023 23:33 (one year ago) link

Love it when some dude gets busted and people parade out saying they’ve always hated the guy and his work. Perennial.

a lot of people got their knives out about louie after the wanking thing became better known but at least some of those people had already been pointing out the red flags in that show for a while (and getting a lot of flack for it) - they didn't know how real it was either - but it became easier to do this once everyone knew about his behaviour. there's some of that going on here I think - it could look like gloating but it could also reflect a hope that such criticism won't be automatically shouted down

many awful stories about this scumbag here

Justin Roiland has a track record of using social media to hit up and exploit vulnerable people and minors and I believe this is an open secret in the industry, he used my sexual trauma and my love for RaM to groom me and I am just one of SO MANY. I am so glad this is public.

why does anyone start a relationship with a famous man over the internet? why? where do you think it is going to go? henry winkler isn't out there contacting abused young women on twitter and insinuating himself into their lives. tom hanks doesn't IM teens on instagram. the only people who do this shit are toxic and bad.

celebrities should have DM capabilities removed by these platforms by default. no good will come of it.

I’ll say more later. For now, I’ll just share the types of “funny” DMs Justin Roiland would send me. (Posted and deleted this last night because I was worried about any backlash. But this dude made ME - someone who wrote a Rick & Morty concept album - never watch his show again) pic.twitter.com/xLYE7j7tgH

i’d kinda given the benefit of the doubt since the show is so ~meta~ that the people behind it were also somewhat self aware of how douchey it comes off as, but no it turns out its creator is like the perfect embodiment of its worst fans

flopson, Sunday, 15 January 2023 23:58 (one year ago) link

I'm not gonna pretend I was on any "never liked him" bit, but it bears remembering that the first pilot/indie cartoon sketch of Rick and Morty ended with Morty - a literal child - having to suck Rick's dick. That always revolted me.

Because most of these people are already vulnerable to manipulation and abuse because of what's already happened to them.

it seems like a lot of these stories have been floating around for a while, just never attracted wider attention until now. that's often how it goes with these predatory celebs, it stays an open secret amongst those in the know and there's murmurings online but nothing happens until either a journalist hears about it and is able to put together a piece compiling the accusations managing to not be scared off by legal threats, or the celeb gets into trouble anyway which gives all the other stories much more attention

The Louis CK stuff was out there for a while thanks to a barely-blind item from Jen Kirkman before it really stuck

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Monday, 16 January 2023 08:22 (one year ago) link

it's a tired cliche at this point for commentators to use phrases like "in a post-#metoo world" the implication being that everyone now takes this shit seriously and no one can get away with it for long because they'll face consequences and the accusers will be listened to and taken seriously etc etc - depending on the commentator this is either wishful thinking or paranoia about cancel culture - regardless you'd hope a minute's reflection about what things are actually like now would make them think twice about employing this cliche but I keep seeing it all the time

Boredom, desire for adventure and change from normal routine, and lack of firm boundaries.

also in this particular case wasn't he targeting minors? you're a teen and the creator of your favourite show has just expressed romantic interest in you, really not a mystery why ppl would be suspectible to that

he was reportedly arrested for domestic violence in 2020, but the news didn’t get out til last week, which has less to do with victims coming forward and more to do with powerful people protecting him from accountability for as long as they could

Also, if you look in some of the twitter threads, at least one person tried bringing this up in 2020 on Reddit and was pretty swiftly shut down/deleted.

This is the thing - despite #metoo, people still dont believe women.

^that one still blows my mind. still have feminist friends proclaiming they're "#teamJohnny" (btw how sick is it to refer to an abuse case with #team anything, this isn't a fucking sport).

hell, there was a little known pop punk band someone reported in the bassnectar thread that had several members accused of sexual misconduct, and everybody in the twitter thread reporting it was accusing the victim of seeking clout - for a band nobody has heard of.

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 14:22 (one year ago) link

What pop punk band was that?

Evan, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 14:47 (one year ago) link

All Time Low (sorry, had to dig the thread back up lol). so I greatly overstated things by saying a "band nobody has heard of", they're definitely well known in the scene.

but not the extremely famous type of band someone would 'falsely accuse' for clout (which let's be frank, nobody really does this anyway, it's just a dog whistle).

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 15:22 (one year ago) link

The odd thing is that I vaguely remember reading about this in 2020. But it must have been a false memory. After a bit of Googling I think I'm remembering this story from 2018 about Dan Harmon, one of the other minds behind Rick and Morty:
https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/community-creator-dan-harmon-admits-sexually-harassing-ex-employee-198341/

He was subsequently fired from Community, although the official reason was that he was unreliable. But he was rehired, and is apparently working on a movie. The news about Justin Roiland makes the following story seem less charming than it would have been in 2021:
https://www.ladbible.com/entertainment/tv-and-film-rick-and-mortys-justin-roiland-got-drunk-while-recording-drunk-rick-20210427

"The recording was for season three episode Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender, in which Rick sets up a deadly Saw-like scenario for a team of superheroes after going on a bender. Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon explained that he encouraged Roiland to get drunk before the take.

And method act he did, knocking back several shots, despite associate producer Sydney Ryan asking Roiland not to have tequila. She explained: "The first thing I told him was don't have tequila, so of course, he had tequila... and liquor just adds a whole new aspect to Justin."

Harmon then admitted that things got 'a little creative'. The clip ... shows Roiland knocking back his fourth shot of tequila, before declaring his, quite clearly boozy, take sounds 'too sober'. Meanwhile Ryan insists: "No it doesn't - it sounds great. Later in the clip, Ryan can be heard urging Roiland to 'try and read this one on-script' as the voice-actor ad libs his lines, questions what happens to us after we die and swears at his colleagues."

Back when *Adventure Time* was a thing I remember saying to myself "please, dear God, don't let Pendleton Ward turn out to be a child molester, rapist, or sex predator". I admit it was because he had a fuzzy beard, and back that I was prejudiced against people with facial hair. The irony is that Justin Roiland, who has been consistently well-groomed - bearded, but well-groomed - is in fact the serial sex predator. Not Pendleton Ward.

Ashley Pomeroy, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 19:01 (one year ago) link

And unfortunately Roiland also had a recurring role on that as the Earl of Lemongrab.

I've seen that behind-the-scenes clip of him getting drunk while recording a take, not saying it was a smoking gun or anything, but it did make me think he "Urghh, this guy's actually kind of a dick".

Although really there were plenty of clues before that, like the way he handled a dispute with the animators when they decided to unionise:

https://www.cartoonbrew.com/artist-rights/rick-and-morty-co-creator-justin-roiland-fuck-the-union-103723.html
