Not sure how it started, it's like we're chatting at the pub, which we can very rarely do IRL. We talk about all sorts, news, politics, music, China stuff. One friend from the group died and it's really nice to have this archive of him talking about all the many things he was into.

Hate it. I am a brain in a vat, please only communicate in text form.

do you have people like this in your life?

A good number of my friends and family are like this! Almost 100% of people I know who send me voice notes are Irish people. The medium is useful for telling stories, there was an absolutely infamous WhatsApp voice note where a former Taoiseach had to come out and deny catfishing young women on Tinder:

I think this should demonstrate the usefulness of voice notes in a story telling medium.

are *you* one of these people? what's up with this?

Yes I also do this, sometimes none and sometimes several a day. It’s useful for various reasons:

- sometimes I want to talk about something that needs to be heard rather than read
- sometimes I’m lazy and don’t want to spend ten minutes typing out something
- last year my mother was in the hospital briefly and during the 12 hours or so we weren’t sure what was going on, I did find the voice notes she had sent me over the years to be comforting.
- they are kind of a weird halfway house between texting and calling and as someone who did like calls it’s nice!

Okay, weirdly the one friend I had who *insisted* on sending me voice notes is Irish. Is this actually a thing or just a bit of a coincidence?

Voices notes are really fun and the only thing more fun than getting a voice note from someone is immediately relistening to a voice note you've just sent them.

I had not considered the memorial/archive aspect to it, that is nice. And I hadn't really considered the possibility of someone being good at this as a medium of expression. You've made me realize there's a friend of mine I would actually encourage to do this.

I will say part of my partner's objection is that she'd prefer her mom to just call her, rather than send long monologues that she must listen to to make sure nothing is wrong (the control/power aspect taps into some of the larger negative dynamics of their relationship), but calling does require schedule synchronization

it is true that I'm a v textual communicator

I have one friend who does this and I do find it a bit weird tbh but I think it's because I would find it pretty hard to do myself, I hate leaving messages on voicemail so actively choosing to do this when you don't have to is pretty unrelatable, although I have got a bit better at it over the years I suppose.

I don't send voice notes, although I do a lot of voice-to-text and then have to clean it up because of transcription errors, so I guess voice notes would be more efficient.

if i am explaining something difficult or complicated, i would rather just explain with voice than write it all out and type it into a tiny box that usually occupies the same space as "be right there" and other utilitarian messages. i am also a person who prefers calls to texts. i just don't feel close to people via tezt bc the communication has limitations i can't get over and i feel it makes me reticent to share in the same way i would verbally.

still i don't send them because i am afraid people are going to be further alienated from me instead of understanding why i am doing it. i wish i had some of my dad bc his messages were absurdly dire-sounding and almost always super banal.

I'd say most times I leave a voice mail is something bad/serious when it would feel like a text is insensitive

This week’s episode of Bad Sisters features Becka sending a voice note in a way that is immediately recognisable to how I would do this, and maybe the first time I’ve seen it done so casually in a tv show?

i don't mind voice notes but I have one friend that will send them 5 in a row, 15-20 minutes of voice notes.
