Houston Oilers were a pretty entertaining team at times.
When I was a kid they were really good and one of my first football heroes was Earl Campbell. There are a bunch of crazy plays of them literally tearing the jersey off him. He once knocked out a safety for the Broncos by running over him.
They 'should' have perhaps won an AFC title and went to the Superbowl one year with Bum Philips as there was a total crap call that is probably one of the first big 'replay shows this was a huge bad call' on a TD catch in the endzone.
They were in the same division with the Bengals as a kid, so I saw them play a bunch.
They were a wacky as hell team when Jerry Glanville coached them both doing crazy shit like blitzing everyone every single play and then having June Jones really by modern football 'run and shoot' offense which was pretty much screw the run game and run the spread a couple decades before the college game made it a thing.
Warren Moon is a serious NFL hero. Dude got racist treatment by the NFL went to Canada and was so f'ing good there winning with Winnipeg they HAD to give him a shot and then he played into his 40s and was totally awesome (outside some off field issues of course).
They also had a killer song. ZZ Top should cut it.

Oh yeah, the Bengals were rivals big time with them in the Sam Wyche/Boomer Esiason era. There was some nasty games between them. Sam Wyche freakin' hated Glanville. He called him out over the PA after a game in Cincy.

One of these weekends, I need to load some pictures of some stuff I found in my dad's garage onto the internet.
I found a couple of old 80s Street & Smith Football preview magazines from the mid 80s. I got the basically the two years of the big Browns/Broncos 'drives'.
In my Dad's toolbox I found a 1981 Jimmy the Greek little football preview pamphlet. It was the kind of thing that would get sold and then this one had a tool and die companies stamp on the back as a give away. It is definitely a window into a different era of football.

haven’t thought about the Oilers in years. loved them as a kid and the “Renfro catch game” devastated me as an 8 year old. my first professional sports wound, lol

It was a big deal and I think really the first step towards instant replay in many ways.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 21 September 2022 01:23 (one year ago) link
There are others, I'd say the 'holy roller' play where Stabler basically fumbles on purpose into the endzone to Dave Caspar was another. That led to a rule change.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 21 September 2022 01:24 (one year ago) link
completely forgot the Stabler fumble. this thread will prob send me down a youtube hole of old Oilers footagei had an old roommate a few years back in the sf bay area. he was from Indiana, but became an Oilers fan in the 70’s when they wee terrible. he liked to root for underdogs and out his support behind the powder blue jerseys. he still had the “love ya blue” 7” at our place they we put on occasionally. terrible, terrible song

kind of amazes me how much of my youth watching the NFL had no instant replay. none from 1992 - 1998.
and I remember the one time I saw it used in 1991 before they scrapped it for six years, I told my grandpa "this is taking almost as long as an entire quarter", as they waited for the review ref to comment. in reality it was probably only two minutes long.

“Pass incomplete,” Reader told umpire John Keck with the walkie-talkies used for instant replay system communication. “Pass is complete,” Keck heard. Inadvertently, the touchdown stood. The Raiders won by a touchdown — 24-17.

Dolphins/Ravens and Dolphins/Bills were both obviously the interesting match up going into the past two weeks and neither was on national broadcasts.
It is pretty much impossible to tell though who is really that good this early in the season.
Can't say I saw Indy beating KC today.

upset with myself cuz I tried to bet the under thinking the game would go exactly like it did but wound up misclicking and taking the over instead. figured I'd let it ride cuz it was destiny. oh well. that game was awful.

more harmful call to the Giants as the Cowboys still got 3 points on their drive, this might have kneecapped the Giants drive

props to the Cowboys for getting the line and getting the next play off before it could be challenged. McCarthy's Packers sure as hell could never do that

definitely seemed like a trend 10-15 years ago that teams would equate a "winning mentality" in a coach to "being as unforgiving an asshole as possible", which was funny because guys like Greg Schiano went 6-10 pretty much every year until they got fired. I wonder how much of that was because Bill Belichick came off that way.

The head coaches that do the best are the ones who hire great coordinators, sign the best players (if they have GM privileges) , doesn't fuck up clock management, and doesn't fuck another staff member's wife.

If Tua takes the field tonight, it's a massive step back for #concussion care in the NFL.If he has a 2nd concussion that destroys his season or career, everyone involved will be sued & should lose their jobs, coaches included. as someone who suffered a severe tbi, i just crumple inside watching that. there was a cadre of docs and therapists making sure i COULD NOT hit my head again for two months. i was belted into a wheelchair for five fucking weeks to make sure i could not risk a fall, my bed was zippered and fucking locked at night.
it is true our situations were not totally similar re extent of damage, but they were not fucking around at all with the risk of a second impact. how nfl could allow that is a fucking crime to me now. (documentary _the crash reel_ covers this issue and a thousand other issues very very well).

in concussion protocol.
well after a brief period of rare light in a Dolphins season, of course it's all going to return to the same ugliness that dogged us prior to season.
going back to soccer where the drama is much more petty and light

(and not actually *life-threatening* like the NFL)
Hmm. Honestly is it the protocol itself that's too lenient?
Speaking with @judybattista on @nflnetwork, NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills says Tua Tagovailoa was checked for concussion symptoms every day since Sunday. Points out independent neuro expert had to clear him. Once review is done, full results will be released publicly.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) September 30, 2022
