pretty funny that every dev's stardew-valley-chasing farm game is now coming out at the same time

is it actually the same map i assumed they would do a calamity / upheaval on it so theres like recognizable spots from the first game but they're fucked up now
Surely it's this, and I for one am looking forward to it. I love it when you get a familiar landscape made strange, whether in a sequel or in the same game, like the Leyndell/Ashen Capital in Elden Ring

I'm a little bummed that there's no sign of Wind Waker or Twilight Princess ports, still

Sigh. I feel like half my time with the Switch has been spent waiting for what comes next, but at this point I think I've finally realized that with few exceptions, whatever it is that Nintendo does best may just be not for me.

Nintendo consoles are for Nintendo first party games. You should buy them if you want to play Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and, uh, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom, which I’m playing through right now. If you’re not into those but want a handheld you might be better off getting a Steam Deck
I agree with this to a certain extent but you can't exactly go buy a Deck easily. Also although I have a Deck and like it, it is nowhere near as plug-and-play as the marketing suggests, you have to do a lot of dicking around to get many games working on it, if they work at all. I'm currently playing Soul Hackers 2 which launched well after the Deck did and it's buggy as hell with regular crashes, I had to search out and install a custom windows layer just to get it working decently. It's not a mass market device, that's for sure.

nintendo consoles are for nintendo first party games, nintendo handhelds are for third party JRPGs and japanese adventure games, the switch is both of these so it's for both

nintendo is for nintending, nuff said
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 17:29 (one year ago) link
I agree with all of that, and it's totally fair, there just haven't been that many first party games that have commanded my attention. Basically just Breath of the Wild, and again, that was technically last gen. Not really a fan of turn-based or rogue-likes or JRPGs, which kind of limits offerings on all systems, tbh, but especially on the Switch. But hey, it was worth buying for Breath and the two Oris alone!

Vampire Survivors? Long-MIA games like Silksong, Samurai Gunn 2, Mineko’s Night Market? Six thousand cozy farming life sims?

I’m on leave from work for mental illness and I’ve been playing a lot of Stardew Valley again, which frankly is extremely good and I do not really need another six thousand entries in this genre when we have this.
I tried the Factorio demo for a bit and while I think I would enjoy the game and their small team worked very hard to make it work on a controller I think the “last mile” of work to make it actually a good console game may not quite be there.

I hope Silksong finally comes out so that people can stop whining about it.that's right, I'm whining about the whining. whineception.

No Silksong. Almost all the games announced seemed like something a particularly precocious middle schooler might have come up with during game-design summer camp.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 19:37 (one year ago) link
more precocious middle schoolers should make games if soglad to see World Of Horror will get out of early access next year, been wanting to play that for ages

I feel like this has become a major trend in indie games (a trend I can't wait to be over)
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 21:22 (one year ago) link
curious which games you're talking about do you just mean 'twee' aesthetics or like silly gameplay concepts like the goose game
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 22:03 (one year ago) link
Speaking just for myself it's a particular combination of twee aesthetic and a naive-feeling over-earnestness. It's like gaming used to be sophomoric in an edgy way and now it's sophomoric in a twee way. The latter is quite preferable, but both trends are kind of annoying to me
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Wednesday, 16 November 2022 00:18 (one year ago) link
I think this is related to the explosion of cozy farming sims and to an extent I get it; we all want something that feels comforting In These Times, etc.

can you really blame the young people who have came out of the last decade of... this worldusually though, i would expect such nostalgia from the olds and not from people in their 20s-30s coming of age post-2008 recessioncapitalism sucks, but at least we have the fantasy of Animal Crossing.

i guess 1993 by the time it hit the US. either way, i played it so much that i was able to optimize my enjoyment-to-cost ratio to over 500 enjoyment points per dollar
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 23:03 (one year ago) link
Yeah, fair enough. Breath was one of the few games I've played totally worth $70, tbh. Sort of surprised there's been no gameplay footage this close to release, though. I'm sure it will run well, I'm just wondering if, as has been rumored, it may be the same map, mostly the same enemies, etc. Not that that would be a dealbreaker, either. Again, another game where more of the same (plus flying or something) is probably OK.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 23:22 (one year ago) link

Nintendo’s voucher program lets you give Nintendo $100 in exchange for two vouchers, each of which you can redeem for a game from a specific list. That list now includes Tear of the Kingdom, meaning you can effectively get one of the most anticipated games of 2023 for just $40 if you’re willing to effectively buy another game at full price. The list of qualifying games includes lots of old stuff that’s frequently on sale, but also plenty of more recent hits like Splatoon 3, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Splatoon 3, and Fire Emblem Engage. What was a maximum savings of $20 is now $30 with Tears of the Kingdom in the mix. The vouchers last up to 12 months, though it’s not exactly clear when Nintendo will stop selling them.
