when people have pointed out Tua was a bit sloppy today (which he was, admittedly) as a pre-text to shit on him, I point them to Rodgers and Burrows's games today.
Rodgers's was worse, I think, because a few of Burrows's turnovers were due to his o-line rapid collapsing, whereas all Aaron did was check down all game and held onto the ball way too long.
Rodgers still plays at a high level but I think he's lost what made him a cut above the league around the time he was winning the Super Bowl, like he shows up when he feels like it. must be that 'cleanse'.

Iâd say that Iâm flabbergasted at the clock mismanagement at the end of that game, but it happens so often anymore that Iâm just kind of numb to it. Why are NFL teams so bad at this???
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 03:25 (one year ago) link
i donât think it was clock mismanagementâ if you honestly believe having your kicker make the second-longest kick in nfl history is more likely than russell wilson picking up five yards, then letting the clock wind down to 20 seconds is the right move. itâs the first part thatâs the problem
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 03:32 (one year ago) link
No, no, this wasn't mismanagement, this shit was by design. Hackett seemed to think this was a brilliant plan, sneaking McManus onto the field after the timeout and freaking Carroll the fuck out for a moment.
A head coach of an NFL team thought a kick whose length is two yards off of the all time record had better odds than picking up five yards with a $242 million dollar QB has a job.

I actually saw a pair of dummies 'defending' the decision, suggesting that they may have picked up the first down, but it still might have left them with a 50+ yard FG, and it's like....moving the ball down the field wasn't Denver's problem on Monday, it was actually punching it into the end zone. and they had three timeouts!
― Bell Bivalent Devax (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 13:30 (one year ago) link
it's a coaching decision much like the time Nick Saban threw a challenge flag on the field, which no ref looked at or saw as they were awaiting the snap, and instead of either clicking the electronic notification button to get their attention, or actually trying to get any refs attention, he just did nothing and the play went on with no challenge.

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 14:33 (one year ago) link
yeah I don't know the numbers exactly but I think those 52-56 yard FGs are like a 50/50 proposition whereas what the Broncos was trying to do would literally need to break an all-time record. I think there's only a couple kickers in the league who can even hit that distance in warmups. though I suppose it's possible that McManus could actually hit those in Denver.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 14 September 2022 14:44 (one year ago) link
I saw in an article about the call that only two 64 yard FGs have been made in the history of the NFL

sheesh, can't believe I forgot about Justin Tucker's 66-yard game winner last year already. suppose I just filed that away in the "things that could only happen to Detroit" drawer in my head. Tucker is a god among kickers though.
the other one was Prater's 64 yarder, but that was in Denver. I wonder if he could've hit that elsewhere.

i always feel like the decision is one of those 'instant gratification' things that sometimes flummoxes new coaches, like. "hmm - i could try for first down here, but we'd need to run a few more plays before we could kick to win, and who knows, maybe we fumble. or shit, I could just kick RIGHT NOW, no waiting needed! yeah, it's gonna be hard, but if we make it we win, and oh will the fans love me"

look I know playoff success ain't everything but it's amazing to me that if Jay Cutler hadn't gotten injured during the 2010 NFCCG there's a very good chance Rodgers would have never played in a single Super Bowl. a lot of people are talking about the very obvious Favre/Rodgers parallels right now but I find it kind of amazing that virtually no one I know wanted him to stick around. it wasn't like that with Favre - so many people here were like "I gotta be a Jets fan now".

― lagân, Thursday, 16 March 2023 15:05 (one year ago) link
look the Packers were set up insanely well to win multiple SBs after 2010, the fact that they never made it back is a remarkable failure. they should've done what the Chiefs are doing now (I will point out too that Mahomes is 27 now - same as Rodgers was when he won it all). they had one of the greatest offenses in NFL history and still found a way to lose to Eli Manning at home. they picked off Russell Wilson 5 times in an NFCCG and still lost it. yes a lot of this had more to do with McCarthy and the front office's baffling decision to never prioritize WRs, but after a while it became clear that Rodgers just did not deliver in big games. so many of his playoff wins were nailbiters in which he threw for like 250 yards and 2 TDs in the first half and then finished with like...320 yards and 2 TDs. and he lost a bunch of playoff games by just throwing to the same dude over and over again. two years ago Rodgers won MVP but wound up losing to Jimmy flippin' Garrapolol (who didn't throw a single TD!) because he would rather throw to a triple-covered Davante Adams than a wide open Lazard doing cartwheels in the end zone. he was just so fucking weird all the time, not in the Favre "maybe he's just not too bright" way, but like in the Dilbert dude way. he's just so unlikeable as a person. the vaccine thing really did rub a lot of people the wrong way...being an antivaxxer is one thing, but trying to deceive everyone and then whining when you get caught, it's like...come on man
actually I'm pretty sure people knew he was a giant weirdo for a while, at least starting when his brother got on the Bachelorette and it was revealed that Aaron actually cut his entire family out of his life for some reason. then that big SI expose comes out about him and McCarthy featuring all these very specific stories of him being a bad teammate and he just goes "nah, that's all fake" like he's Michael Jackson or something. all good as long as he's playing well right? well, this year he sucked. the one thing he always had was his accuracy and now he was bouncing footballs off defenders' helmets. he even did that thing you'd see with Mark Sanchez where he'd throw deep and it would fake out the cameraman because there would just be no one there. even still every single thing broke Green Bay's way and they actually had an opportunity to make it to the playoffs simply by beating a deflated Lions team with nothing to play for, AT HOME. once again he gets out there and chucks it around like he forgot the entire playbook. they could have salvaged the entire season!!! instead, game on the line, he chucks it deep where it's nothing but Detroit, and his last pass in GB goes down as a season ending interception
anyway, I don't think anyone's really convinced by Jordan Love, but who knows! there's like a 15% chance he's good! but hey, at best what you're getting with Rodgers at this point is another humiliating early playoff exit, so why not roll the dice??

― lagân, Thursday, 16 March 2023 16:11 (one year ago) link
that SI story was pretty illuminating, just running through the gamut of ways Rodgers was weirdly petty and unforgiving. there's a bit in there about Rodgers telling the guys on the other team covering Greg Jennings "you should pick him up next year" since his contract was up. its a very specific thing and I think someone even found the video in the broadcast where it happens, and it would be so easy for him to just say "yeah I was joking around, of course we wanted to keep him" he just denies the whole thing happened and just goes "he hates me for no reason". very Trumpy behavior all around.
― frogbs, Thursday, 16 March 2023 16:34 (one year ago) link
I know it's probably nothing but I always wondered what exactly it was that caused this guy to fall so far in the 2005 draft. I used to watch a bunch of the ESPN shows back then and I remember a lot of the talk about Aaron Rodgers vs. Alex Smith, and I am pretty sure the consensus was that while Smith may have been more of a "sure thing" Rodgers had way more upside and was definitely the guy you wanted if you were a rebuilding franchise. Plus he was from Cali so everyone wanted the 49ers to draft him. Not only did they not draft him but three quarters of the league passed on him as well. I've never seen anything like that before, usually when theres a franchise QB debate those guys always go 1-2 or 1-3. I wonder if there was some story about him back then that was causing all these teams to get cold feet.

― The Artist formerly known as Earlnash, Sunday, 19 March 2023 01:27 (one year ago) link
idk about that, I mean the year after he had probably one of the greatest seasons a QB's ever had. even with a crappy defense everyone thought they might go 19-0 because they were scoring touchdowns on every possession
Rodgers just has this thing where he's super good but I think once you solve the Packers' gameplan he doesn't really have the ability to figure out where the openings are. In fact he's remarkably stubborn sometimes. That's why he has a lot of really insane 1st halves but by the 2nd its like "dont look now but he's still not over 300 yards". even during the SB year this was a problem, they'd come out and wallop teams and build the kind of lead that seemed insurmountable yet somehow the opposing team would always seem to have a chance to win it in the end. We kept saying this is gonna come back to bite them in the ass. Compare to Tom Brady who seems to be the opposite, no matter what you do the guy figures out a way to at least make it close in the end
― frogbs, Sunday, 19 March 2023 16:19 (one year ago) link
basically with his arsenal of weapons and ability yet failure to win in the end, coupled with the terrible ideas he gets in his head because he spends to much time listening to the wrong people and alienating everyone around him and his tendency to hang out huddled up in dark chambers, heâs the closest thing the nfl has to saruman.
