mookieproof, Friday, 9 September 2022 15:59 (one year ago) link

I won yesterday bc my opponent gave me a 3 on the baby name question, smh

jaymc, Friday, 9 September 2022 17:08 (one year ago) link

Lol!

Jean Arthur Rank (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 September 2022 17:12 (one year ago) link

I guess I should feel bad for getting credit on Q6 (I answered breasts) that gave me a 6(3)-5(4) win yesterday, but I will never say no to a win, especially one that gives me a little bit of cushion from the relegation zone.

Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Wednesday, 14 September 2022 17:22 (one year ago) link

i answered the same

my opponent gave me 2 for the sears tower question even though i have chicago as my location (and they got it right too so they knew what it was)

learned league is a reflection of society because a bunch of dudes incorrectly said BREASTS and got credit for it (including me)

Midseason Classic: Classic or Dud?

Ride On Proserpina (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 September 2022 01:06 (one year ago) link

I thought I did pretty badly this time around, but since I actually almost qualified, I guess it was one of the harder ones?

Some people on the LL message board post about studying for LL, like "I even reviewed my world capitals Anki deck last week, but I guess should have paid more attention to Southeast Asia!" And to each their own, I guess, but I just can't relate to this at all. (I'm not even sure what an Anki deck is.)

Admittedly, I did a bit of general prep before I went on Jeopardy!, and when I used to go to a pub quiz that always announced one round's theme in advance, I'd sometimes read through the relevant Wikipedia page to help my team's chances. (It was usually about a TV show or some other specific piece of pop culture.)

But I like LL as a daily brain teaser, a test of what I already know (or what I'm able to summon from the depths of my memory). Studying a random subject in the hopes that Thorsten might ask about it someday just seems kind of weird to me. If it's mostly about improving one's general knowledge out of genuine curiosity, with success at trivia games an added benefit, I can understand that a bit more. But "studying" just makes me think these people are all try-hard nerds.

Hearing that.

Ride On Proserpina (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 20 September 2022 17:41 (one year ago) link

Like a while back I used to buy crossword dictionaries and the World Almanac but not for a long time now.

Ride On Proserpina (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 20 September 2022 17:43 (one year ago) link

As someone who started an entire thread on Anki, I started studying flashcards as a way to avoid that feeling when Thorsten asks something and I just have a huge blank in my head about it, especially on a topic that lends itself pretty easily to rote memorization. That said, the amount of time it started to take just seemed like too much to commit to, and I haven't studied at all in a couple seasons (my alternative to flashcards has been to watch more history Youtubes).

Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Tuesday, 20 September 2022 18:37 (one year ago) link

Most of my, um, gamified study these days is given over to language learning apps. Other things I’d prefer to learn other ways or live with not knowing.

Ride On Proserpina (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 20 September 2022 18:55 (one year ago) link

I have at least one friend who was in the championship who says he nevers studies, just does trivia nights a few days per week, I think.

Touché and What of it? :-D

I'll freely cop to being a try-hard nerd! It's like, This Is My Sport* **, and I really do spend an inordinate amount of time trying to be good at it, including cardbin app use (Mnemosyne is my jam rather than Anki). LL is just one of many arenas.

*) my Second Sport is Scrabble (in Norwegian). There has been some fruitful cross-learning actually, such as the time I had a look at the allowed words ending in notoriously shitty letter F, one of which was TREIF, apparently a kind of opposite to KOSCHER – I'd never come across the word, but it turned up in a competitive quiz only a few weeks later yay.)

**) I also truly love orienteering, but am a bad and slow runner, so will never amount to anything competitively there, except enjoying trots in the woods immensely.

The beauty of LL is of course that the small number of questions, and the vagaries of defence, mean that on Any Given Weekday anyone can beat anyone.

Finally hit the relegation zone again. :\

Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

Me too. Even though I'm tied 11th out of 30 in correct answers, defence has been pretty bad and schedule has been terrible; am in a clear second(-worst) place in CAA.

anatol_merklich, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:07 (one year ago) link

I'm in first for the first time since my rookie rundle, just jinxed it

Anyone voting in the VBWA poll? Anyone waiting to see about 1DS submissions?

Misirlou Sunset (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 October 2022 21:06 (one year ago) link

I'm sticking around in B again, not sure how I feel about that.

Misirlou Sunset (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 16:23 (one year ago) link

C, because that's where I'm not a bottomfeeder.

Kim Wipers - Youth in America (Leee), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 17:31 (one year ago) link

I get you.

Misirlou Sunset (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 18:01 (one year ago) link

placed second and am moving up to C, which where i ALSO think i belong!

I finished 5th, which is the highest I've ever finished in an A rundle, even though I've had eight seasons with more correct answers. Got lucky a bunch of times.

jaymc, Tuesday, 4 October 2022 20:23 (one year ago) link

Wow. Congrats!

anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 19:42 (one year ago) link

nice job!

i definitely belong in C, since i almost always end up right in the middle of the pack. i did make it up to B for a few seasons but the competition was much tougher for me there.

Start studying up on your memes and YouTubers because my Online Content minileague proposal was accepted for next year (in October)

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 13 October 2022 01:08 (one year ago) link

Now that it's passed: I tried playing the Alias 1DS, having written my MA thesis on it, and couldn't answer a single question.

What am I getting myself into with the CanCon ML.

Fartleby the Scrivener (Leee), Thursday, 20 October 2022 16:02 (one year ago) link

Think I know what I got into: classic first night forfeit!

I'm in a group with this guy.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 October 2022 18:51 (one year ago) link

Wow. Is it really him? I guess you wouldn't misrepresent.

I'm doing OK in the Medicine in Pop Culture ML, but have not really been enjoying the question writing. A bunch of the questions seem to have a strained or tenuous connection between the two parts of the name. Like this one from yesterday:

Q: Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy is an example of a disorder caused by premature codons of WHAT TYPE? This codon is musically and lyrically represented in the songs "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer, "I Try" by Macy Gray, and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" by Marvin Gaye."

A: Stop

This is not an example of medicine in pop culture. This is a common word that is used in both medical and musical contexts.

The day before there were TWO questions about medical situations whose only identified connection to pop culture was that they are frequently depicted in movies or TV shows.

And then this one: WHAT MEDICAL DEVICE, sharing a name with a song released by Marilyn Manson in 1996, can save a person's life if quickly applied by a bystander following a severe traumatic injury?

There's more of a connection there, sure -- the song's lyrics use the device (a tourniquet) as a metaphor -- but you won't find it in the way the question is asked, which treats the connection more like a superficial coincidence.

jaymc, Friday, 21 October 2022 02:58 (one year ago) link

i am also finding the writing and conceptual threading on that quiz to be tenuous.

Not to pile on but I agree with the above on this minileague, plus there has been at least one question that did not have even a tenuous attempted connection to pop culture: "In 2017, former US Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy declared an epidemic of WHAT PSYCHOLOGICAL RESPONSE that is associated with depression and suicide?"

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 21 October 2022 12:18 (one year ago) link

i'm not doing that ML but i haven't been enjoying the Children's and Young Adult Bookshelf ML. it has way too many YKIOYD questions imo. these minileagues give me a lot more appreciation for the question construction skills in the standard LL competition.

na (NA), Friday, 21 October 2022 13:23 (one year ago) link

OTM. There are guidelines and rules of question construction. On a 1DS maybe you have a little more leeway since people can opt out, but if an ML is poorly constructed it can be maddening.

Hey, somebody we know won Pop Culture Physics!

Well along with a few dozen others.

lol 25-way tie for first, congrats!

Fartleby the Scrivener (Leee), Friday, 21 October 2022 21:38 (one year ago) link

Hey, a 25 way tie for first still counts as a first. I'll take it.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 22 October 2022 18:51 (one year ago) link

Sure! Also, just looked at your overall 1DS stats. Pretty impressive.

Something weird with some MLs today.
