seeing as how adidas has had a total monopoly on jerseys for years and will for several more years (iirc): it could (and probably will be) worse

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Wednesday, 8 March 2023 01:53 (one year ago) link

Austin were -1500 Vegas favorites coming into this leg. Valotte AC have a rich history but the league they belong to hasn't completed a full season since 2018. and they had to play their 'home' leg of the match in another country (Dominican Republic). and facing one of the higher ranked teams in MLS who had a strong offensive output last year, and come out and win the first leg over them 3-0. what a great story/performance.

but also LOL AT AUSTIN FC

xpost nice. weirdly you all have a few ex-Orlando City players (David Loera and Victor "PC" Giro). so I guess I'll root for yas to win again this year ;)

we had santiago patiño, too! he was our playoff goal machine. he's off to brazil's 2nd flight iirc.

love pc, his name is completely incomprehensible to (theyre not his initials, not rly into gaming computers either afaik)

any chance we could rename this thread to a general "professional american soccer" type beat? talk about mls, nwsl, usl, us national teams, etc?

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 27 March 2023 02:14 (one year ago) link

i wouldn't object

actually going to watch the USMNT tomorrow against El Salvador

oh nice!

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 27 March 2023 02:34 (one year ago) link

i am watching the angel city v gotham game rn and i am so so happy that angel city has been such a hit. west coast has the best soccer culture in the country (4 of the top 5 in nwsl attendance last year were west coast teams).

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 27 March 2023 02:34 (one year ago) link

I really am sad that the Pride never got embraced in Orlando. interest was high for *one year* and then attendance fell to pitiful levels, and then the product on the field went into the toilet so it'll probably never recover.

shame...I love the NWSL. good soccer, and the small size of the league means you get to see some of the World Cup stars. we had Alex Morgan for several years.

speaking of...SD wave had over 30k at their opener this weekend

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 27 March 2023 02:49 (one year ago) link

now THAT'S how you fuckin' do it

anticipating the '23 women's world cup boost for sure. three new teams coming i think by next year: utah, sf, and boston.

usl is supposedly starting a 2nd div women's league ('usl super league'). they had originally announced an aug 2023 start, but delayed it for another year. calendar is gonna line up with the aug-june international calendar. theyve been pretty tight-lipped about any teams though, just saying there'd be 10-12 teams to start and that most of them would be in cities that already have usl presence. would love to eventually see a women's open cup.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 27 March 2023 02:54 (one year ago) link

also btw how the fuck are stl 5-0-0 right now?? crazy

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 27 March 2023 03:17 (one year ago) link

I was just talking about that with my buddies! I think the fact that they signed a lot of players early so they had a full off-season to practice helped. But to be 5-0-0 with a +11 goal differential is nuts for an expansion team even in this weird league.

our leading goal scorer from last year is there now, sam adenarin. he was here on loan from seattle and was a major reason why sa won the usl championship last year. he's gotten some playing time off the bench as a striker in stl so i kinda root for them.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Monday, 27 March 2023 04:12 (one year ago) link

always happy to talk about other leagues in here, rename as necessary

The place is gonna pop off when Dike takes the field. Best striker Orlando City ever had, he's a hero here

That was one boring half. Got more beer

Don Garber at the USSF board meeting, expresses MLS' disappointment in the setup of the the US Open Cup (streams, fields, etc): "They are not games that we would want our product to be shown to a large audience so frankly I'm not all that disappointed that the audience is small."

— Jeff Kassouf (@JeffKassouf) May 5, 2023

DonG Arber rapidly approaching Gary Bettman levels of booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Wednesday, 7 June 2023 17:49 (ten months ago) link

hahaha.

shit, when do they come to Orlando.

the manwich horror (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 7 June 2023 19:50 (ten months ago) link

Messi experiment is gonna be kinda hilarious as he's going to a real shit squad and gonna get frustrated with how terrible they are at setting him up but he'll spike attendance everywhere he goes.

but if he comes in the summer window, how many matches is he gonna start after already playing an entire full season with PSG

the manwich horror (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 7 June 2023 19:55 (ten months ago) link

This sounds like a retirement move (haven't read anything about it though. Been out of the loop)

Punster McPunisher, Wednesday, 7 June 2023 20:29 (ten months ago) link

oh totally is.

I'm gonna keep my ticket so I can maybe see him play but let's be real if they do it in the summer window it's more for next year anyway
