2022 NBA OFF SEASON DRAFT FREE AGENCY TAMPERING ETC

I’d be interested in reading a long thing by someone smart weighing the pros and cons of this. presumably it’d benefit the league financially, and sure there is enough NBA talent to field another couple of teams. but the NBA is a star’s league and there aren’t really 32 stars with that kind of draw…and the way things have been trending with stars teaming up, it seems possible we’d just end up with 2 more really bad teams

i agree its preferable to move and change ownership of two shitty teams but that has more to do with the fact that there are shitty orgs/locations than anything else IMHO

the whole point of expansion is so that the owners can collect $5 billion or whatever the number will end up being for two new teams. saying you’d rather them relocate two bad franchises is like saying you’d rather the sky be green every day. i guess it will be interesting to see how you try and build a team up from zero nowadays but otherwise i’m ambivalent on it. seattle and vegas are at least two cool markets, better them than kansas city and louisville

very much looking forward to some minor conference realignment so, say, the team in Louisiana is not in “the west” etc

NBA has suspended Suns owner Robert Sarver for one year from the Suns and Mercury organization based on league investigation. Sarver has also been fined $10 million and complete training program focused on respect and appropriate workplace conduct.

glen taylor got suspended over the joe smith contract thing. the NFL has suspended dan snyder and stephen ross in the last year as well. i agree that it seems generally unenforceable aside from the ban on being in the arena

i mean what else could it entail? can they stop him from making money off of the team for a year? i guess theres some revenue sources that go through the league office that they can withhold?

i think it’s supposed to encompass a ban on being involved in team activities, roster building & marketing decisions etc. but no idea how they would enforce that

he can just pay off the ten milli with money he saved by not paying ayton last season

i would imagine $10 million is the biggest fine in the history of the league by a large margin but for a guy of sarver’s wealth that isn’t very painful

the owner doesnt need to do that stuff anyway though

10 mill to a billionaire is like a technical foul fine for the players

apparently 10 mil is the max possible fine per league rules.

i assume the suspension means he doesn't get to be involved as a governor in any votes on rule changes and all of that stuff though they must get to send someone in his place.

the sterling option would be good but i bet that has mostly to do with the other owners deciding youre too depraved even for them, which is a pretty high bar

there was a legitimate player revolt over sterling to the point of nearly protesting a playoff game which i think really forced the league’s (as a consortium of owners) hand in that situation. the suns seemed to take more of a “we just work here, man” approach to the sarver stuff which is totally understandable for various reasons incl them having real championship goals to worry about. but i think that helped keep the story on the back burner. also they had sterling on tape which always matters

yeah the sterling event was unique. no one in ownership (which includes the commissioner) wants to set a precedent that allows their teams to be taken away

(i do find it funny that the nfl basically made jerry richardson sell the panthers but won't do anything meaningful to daniel snyder)

love in the espn article that sarver fully cooperated with the investigation but became incensed that he might actually be *punished* for anything

with sterling the recordings were such a big deal, that always gives these things multiple times the magnitude
