even w/ the east getting better if they're just in the 7/8/9 morass next year this trade will look kinda like a failure. same for the hawks tho! the east will be fun

J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 September 2022 20:36 (one year ago) link

the big unknown is whether the three teams who really didn't do much -- miami, chicago, toronto -- are still as good or if they get passed up by the nets, cavs, hawks. i would be really concerned if i was a bulls fan...

J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 September 2022 20:36 (one year ago) link

bulls are sad man they made big moves and came up way short

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 September 2022 20:39 (one year ago) link

Spottie, Thursday, 1 September 2022 21:33 (one year ago) link

sounds like the knicks and jazz were close on a deal then the knicks just up and signed barrett to a new deal which blew the whole thing up

New York had the assets package that Utah preferred and the sides seemed to be inching closer to a trade on Sunday night and into Monday, but New York balked on including Quentin Grimes into a trade with RJ Barrett to acquire Mitchell, sources said.

When guard Immanuel Quickley was proposed as a replacement for Grimes in the trade, Utah wanted three unprotected first-round draft picks as part of the package -- but New York would only do a third first-round pick that included Top 5 protections, sources said. Those packages would've included two second-round picks, two pick swaps and two expiring contracts from a third team, sources said. New York would've moved out Evan Fournier and first-round pick to a third team to spare Utah taking on Fournier's remaining $37 million, sources said.

New York president Leon Rose had been running a parallel negotiation with Barrett's agent, Bill Duffy, on a rookie contract extension and set Monday night as a deadline with the Jazz to get a deal -- or pause talks to finalize a new deal with Barrett, sources said. Barrett's deal -- four years and worth up to $120 million, Duffy told ESPN -- added a "Poison Pill" provision to his contract until next July and would've forced the Knicks and Jazz to restart talks with new deal parameters based on the extension.

New York planned to continue pursuing Mitchell, sources said, but the Jazz pivoted to the Cleveland discussions and never again engaged New York in talks this week, sources said. The Knicks had made a calculated gamble that they could still get a deal done for Mitchell. A New York-area native, Mitchell had been enthusiastic over playing for the Knicks, sources said.

My biggest question about this deal: Does Donovan Mitchell want to be in Cleveland?

it is a good question

Anything’s an upgrade over Utah

frogbs, Thursday, 1 September 2022 23:03 (one year ago) link

i love this trade for the cavs btw, this is more fun than using mid first round picks and i don't think they should lose sleep over any of the players they gave up

J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 September 2022 23:05 (one year ago) link

i like this for the cavs too but I also believe that Danny Ainge needs to be immediately arrested and extradited to baseball

Clay, Thursday, 1 September 2022 23:10 (one year ago) link

having another team in the league like OKC will be annoying... there has never been an NBA where two teams owned as many draft picks as those two, and the jazz still have other trades to make. but whatever

J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 September 2022 23:12 (one year ago) link

spurs have a small pick haul themselves as well

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 1 September 2022 23:22 (one year ago) link

could get more if they do any deals for poeltl, josh richardson, and/or mcbuckets

terence trent d'ilfer (m bison), Thursday, 1 September 2022 23:23 (one year ago) link

im sure bojan will fetch another pick at the deadline for a contender looking for a scoring punch

Spottie, Thursday, 1 September 2022 23:34 (one year ago) link

The reaction to this is... interesting I'll say that

Overall this is how I break it down to an extent

Danny ainge got lot young players from Minnesota timberwolves Cleveland Cavaliers got young guy from Los Angeles Lakers 6 future 1 rd draft pick sweep 1 draft pick Danny ainge. New Sam presti Oklahoma City Thunder. Get lots picks young guys

idk if mitchell wants to be on the cavs but from a basketball and also fame perspective he should, getting in on the ground floor of an up and coming teams is better than playing for the freakin new york knicks

lag∞n, Friday, 2 September 2022 00:01 (one year ago) link

'The Cleveland Cavaliers have traded for Donovan Mitchell. I predict we will see him play a lot of basketball as a guard where he'll score a lot of points for his team, but I guess we'll have to wait and see when the season begins this fall.'

Utah’s CEO of Basketball Danny Ainge is doing a fantastic job rearranging Utah roster and acquiring 13 unprotected or lightly protected picks. I don’t think he’s done yet!

i like this for the cavs, right time to take a swing. don't have any idea what the knicks are doing--either you want mitchell or you don't. you don't tie that to barrett talks or quentin grimes or whatever.

can this be true

At the start of trade talks in July, New York offered Utah a Donovan Mitchell package including RJ Barrett, Obi Toppin, Mitchell Robinson and three unprotected first-round picks, sources tell ESPN. Jazz turned down that offer and Robinson signed a $60M extension to stay w/ NY. https://t.co/3eDg2Mf7f1

i guess i should express what i mean by that a little better--they seem to want to build 45-win teams. they have found some ok players and signed some prudent extensions but have foreclosed any path to actually being good.

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 September 2022 02:23 (one year ago) link

part of me thinks that they leaked a fake deal to woj to mollify annoying knicks fans on twitter

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Friday, 2 September 2022 02:39 (one year ago) link

yeah, i think that makes sense. i wouldn't put that past them at all

only one team is actually going to win each year; in the meantime, what should the rest do? the east is loaded and the cavs just got mitchell; should the knicks now have a fire sale because they're doomed?

i mean i accept that y'all know much more about the pro game than i do, and i do not doubt the advanced stats. but in the process of having a fanbase that attends games and buys season tickets and is excited about the team, what's the best course? those dudes screaming outside the garden last year were the most exciting the knicks have been in 15 years.

would posit that a front office's real job is not to 'win titles' but to make the team perennially interesting and fun and sometimes if everything goes right they make a run. it didn't work out for utah and it hasn't yet worked out for the sixers, but so it goes

fuck the heat tho <3

mookieproof, Friday, 2 September 2022 04:23 (one year ago) link

The sixers are in the hunt tho.

Being a competent team is good but they’ve only done that like twice in the last two decades.

the way to do this would have been to.....trade for donovan mitchell!

that's what i don't get--they've made all these arbitrage moves in the draft to collect picks, the reason to hire ex-agency guys to run the team is to acquire stars, and they've built a team where the two best players might not ever be all stars. it's so weirdly conservative and the rest of the east is just lapping them.

windhorst said on his podcast that the knicks offered rj barrett, quentin grimes, obi toppin and two unprotected firsts. to me it makes no sense that the knicks couldn’t get the deal done if all that was at stake was one more unprotected first. bcuz those three players are > the three from the cavs. i think there are deals the knicks could have done here that would have gotten them killed by the media & fans, but i don’t think that would have been one of them.

windhorst also essentially said that the knicks pissed the jazz off by enacting this fake trade deadline & then signing barrett to the extension and announcing it. the knicks thought there were no other contenders for mitchell & decided to play a bit of hardball with the jazz who were then like “fuck these guys” and more or less immediately traded mitchell to another team for a package the knicks could have beaten. the question for me is whether the knicks were offered the ability to counter the cavs offer and bowed out or if the jazz just took the cavs offer without even calling the knicks back

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 September 2022 14:18 (one year ago) link

that is all just really weird
