xp sexy and goofy and ambitious and very brief ... it shouldn't work and, for many, I suspect it won't, but it arguably does gay firefighters better than did Titane

i don't wanna be boring and then just post nope and everything everywhere, even though that would be my honest answer

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Monday, 29 August 2022 15:17 (one year ago) link

I mean those are my two answers, along with Mad God. (And certainly RRR is a hell of a ride if a loaded one.)

Popping the popcorn as we speak to watch it.

The minutes will seem like hours.

RRR

TÁR easily my favorite as of now

na (NA), Monday, 7 November 2022 15:21 (one year ago) link

Poster for TÁR has been intriguing me. Wish I had seen RRR when it was on MUBI GO, still haven’t caught up with it.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 7 November 2022 16:15 (one year ago) link

Have caught up with a few more in anticipation of a first-draft year-end ballot:

Benediction [Soto OTM]
Lux Æterna
Introduction

ex-McKinsey wonk who looks like a human version of a rat (Eric H.), Monday, 7 November 2022 16:18 (one year ago) link

TÁRRR

RRR should definitely be remade as a depressing Hungarian black and white film

jmm, Monday, 7 November 2022 16:19 (one year ago) link

Benediction [Soto OTM]

There are very few moments in life as good as this. Let's remember it.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 November 2022 16:23 (one year ago) link

Benediction is excellent. I've been trying to convince people to watch it but they seem to think its a Merchant Ivory type movie

RRR
Benediction
Decision To Leave

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 7 November 2022 17:51 (one year ago) link

Gonna watch Corsage tonight. Eric's boys in Slant liked it.

i wanna see eo so goddamn bad

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 2 December 2022 15:36 (one year ago) link

Let this take sweeten the deal:

Jerzy Skolimowski's #EO doesn't "remake" Au Hasard Balthazar but replaces and dismisses the Christian allegory of Bresson's masterpiece. Nihilist critics love it. https://t.co/EhrKnkjSjk

عباس کیارستمی (Eric H.), Friday, 2 December 2022 15:38 (one year ago) link

They threw in a cardboard ladydonkey to sweeten the deal!

The Dark End of the Tweet (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 December 2022 16:18 (one year ago) link

EO looks great.

adding Bones and All to my 3. im not sure what movie it replaces yet

billstevejim, Sunday, 4 December 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link

You need to watch Benediction, The Fabelmans, Aftersun, and Peter Von Kant

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 4 December 2022 15:41 (one year ago) link

bones and all entered my top three too, 1 and 3 are still crimes of the future and mad god. mad god hopefully no. 1 on sight & sound 2032

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 4 December 2022 16:43 (one year ago) link

Definitely need to catch Pacifiction before next week if I can

Aftersun destroyed me. what a debut

They do the Shug a loo, do the Shy Tuna, do the Kemba Walker (fionnland), Sunday, 4 December 2022 20:14 (one year ago) link

Same. While we're editing, I'll add that, and maybe We're All Going to the World's Fair, which I wasn't sure would have the same effect on rewatch but pretty much did.

sloop johnnin' skater (geoffreyess), Sunday, 4 December 2022 21:49 (one year ago) link

My FFCC nomination ballot:

Benediction
Aftersun
Decision to Leave

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 December 2022 12:17 (one year ago) link

I love this thread, because three movies forces folks to focus, and people like me, who don't get to see nearly as many movies a year as they'd like (but still lots!) get a better lay of the (ILX) land than I would from a, say, top 50 movies of the year list. For example, I recall reading positive reviews of "Aftersun" months ago, but I more or less forgot about it, so now it's back toward the top of my "must watch" list.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 12 December 2022 13:17 (one year ago) link

Crimes of the Future
How to Blow Up a Pipeline
RRR

Murgatroid, Monday, 12 December 2022 15:02 (one year ago) link

Causeway
I Love My Dad
Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood

Lots still to see, of course; in terms of prioritizing what to watch, I am definitely feeling Josh’s xpost.

Decision to Leave is a really dazzling film.

Chris L, Sunday, 22 January 2023 09:12 (one year ago) link

visually and as an acting showcase, sure, contrivance of the narrative felt a bit hokey tho, guess it was a vehicle for the visual poetry or whatever

saw Enys Men yesterday, that might be more of a 2023 film but would be close to or at the top of my 2022 list, obv owes a lot to its UK cinema forebears (shades of Under The Skin, Penda's Fen blah blah) but also came off as a far-more-successful take on the Upstream Color slow sound-games, hopefully with a better IRL ending between director and actor as well

dunno if I mentioned this but coming back from Aftersun a dude on the tube complimented my outfit and I think it might've been because I looked like I was about to start sobbing
