Trump made some outrageous claims about German energy at the UN — and the German delegation’s reaction was priceless pic.twitter.com/izpa2fKC3B

Lots of crowing from the right online about that (MAGAbots obv but not exclusively), like a bandwagon attack on Germany for rejecting nuclear and approach to renewable. But Germany is now on 40% less gas from Russia than it was a year ago and whatever Germans are paying for energy I get the impression Brits will actually pay more.

Actually came to the thread to post Jamie Foxx's new-to-me extremely good Trump impression but nm

I know it's been said but the Mussolini parallels in the asshole's mannerisms in that video are overwhelming

Jamie Foxx does a better vocal mimic of Trump than that "comedy professional" from R4 who does it very badly

calzino, Monday, 29 August 2022 11:50 (one year ago) link

He's a pretty good mimic overall. Cf. his appearance on Fallon's "Wheel of Musical Impressions."

I think he will refuse to run in the 2024 election until after they sort out the 2020 election

he totally could win

to me the crazy part is admitting he lost because the FBI (that he presided over) didn't publicly pursue his political opponents aggressively enough and that amounts to election interference.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Monday, 29 August 2022 18:00 (one year ago) link

I wonder if there's a small percentage of Trump supporters who didn't even vote, confident that he couldn't possibly lose to Sleepy Joe who NEVER HELD RALLIES!

he's still by far the most popular figure in the Republican party and, until recently, pretty much everyone on this board assumed he was gonna win in 2024

frogbs, Monday, 29 August 2022 18:06 (one year ago) link

I think he still could, and it’s not a small chance. Source: the history of the United States

Don't blame the voters. If he's the only racist on the ballot then who else can they vote for?

So what you (and the other folks who agree with you) think is that Donald Trump is more popular now than he was in November 2016, when he squeaked out the most statistically improbable barely-a-win in US political history. More popular now than he was in November 2020, when he lost by seven million votes. More popular after January 6. More popular after the Mar-A-Lago raid and all the news stories about mishandling of classified national security documents. Joe Biden has shitty approval ratings, but his approval/disapproval numbers are ten points above Trump's. But sure, Trump could win.

At this point we're conditioned to expect the stupidest outcome imaginable, all of which were unimaginable pre-2016

Evan, Monday, 29 August 2022 18:26 (one year ago) link

there is entirely valid reasons to worry about the fuckery that might happen in the elections in 2024. with that being said, giving myself a brain tumor over it now when I can't do anything about it isn't going to help things, so I'm waiting til closer to that time and I'm sure demonstrations are gonna ramp up anticipating the sabotage.

we should be doing that for the midterms as well.

nope

if he wins, it would be because he stole it. they're going to try to steal it again. it's great that america's institutions stood up to it in 2020. hopefully they do enough in 2024 as well.

i don't think this is likely. i'm just saying, when tens of millions of angry people decide to openly steal an election together, they do have a chance, even if they're outnumbered and make no sense and everyone hates them

With his base, he has reached messianic status. They will turn out for him no matter what. Combine that with tepid interest in whoever the Democratic candidate is, Supreme Court shenanigans insulating state running of elections from judicial review, and the assumption of the voting apparatus by his supporters, and yes, I think he could win.

true, but every time Trumpism is on the ballot the other side turns out in big numbers as well. it's fun to watch the right all aghast that Joe Biden - arguably a less exciting candidate than Al Gore - got 81 million votes, completely oblivious to how insanely off putting Trump and the entire Republican platform is right now

frogbs, Monday, 29 August 2022 18:51 (one year ago) link

OTM. The cult has no idea how despised its leader is outside the cult.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 29 August 2022 18:54 (one year ago) link

we're hypothesizing about an utterly batshit scenario in which there was suddenly a re-do election because the FBI didn't arrest Hunter Biden, but the crazy part is thinking if such a scenario came to pass there's no way Trump could win, am I getting this right?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Monday, 29 August 2022 18:55 (one year ago) link

No, I was thinking of 2024, not a hypothetical "redo" of 2020.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 29 August 2022 18:56 (one year ago) link

let's worry about 2024 after we win the 2020 re-do, ok?

You can't spell Fearless without Earle (President Keyes), Monday, 29 August 2022 18:58 (one year ago) link

every time Trumpism is on the ballot the other side turns out in big numbers as well

This is what I'm saying. A) Trump's base has shrunk since 2020; B) the number of people who hate Trump, and by extension hate the Republican party, and will absolutely vote against them, has grown substantially, especially since Roe v. Wade was overturned. I mean, 70% of new voter registrations in Pennsylvania are women. Do you think they're planning on voting Republican? I don't.

lag∞n, Monday, 29 August 2022 19:16 (one year ago) link

lag∞n, Monday, 29 August 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

xxp yeah, I don't think we are going to re-do the 2020 election under any circumstances. But I will not dismiss the possibility of Trump winning until he is dead and buried.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 29 August 2022 19:35 (one year ago) link

That process looks something like this:
1. Trump dies
2. Trump is buried
3. Hunter Biden’s laptop
4. Trump is exhumed
5. Trump wins presidency
