I thought these were mainly used for mixes....to take on the road with you (I don't have an ipod, I hate them)!!

Seconding everyone who says this will scratch your CDs. Do not do this; keep them in the jewel cases.

I got rid of all my jewel cases 7 years ago. None of my CDs have been actually damaged. Sure, they have some surface scratches, but nothing that prevents play.

We also keep our whole dvd collection in CD binders, and haven't ever had a problem.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 11:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the deal is if you get a binder, be careful that you don't go across your cds with a rusty nail en route from the jewel case to the binder. they will get scratched if you do that.

important piece of info often overlooked

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

So that's what I've been doing wrong! xp

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I wonder, are the people with scratched CDs using limited edition binders made out of steel wool??? I have never had this problem.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe this was a problem with binders from, oh, 1999? Or perhaps I just bought a shitty binder or didn't know how to take care of my CDs when I was 15?

I haven't used a binder for my records in ten years. RIP.

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh dude, yeah. They came out with new cd binder technologies after that.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Hahaha, fuck you. :-)

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

These things are ugly and cumbersome and largely pointless now. The point of buying CDs in physical format is partly for the sleeves etc - a CD is really just a piece of plastic that holds data. What's the advantage of one of these over an iPod full of high-quality MP3s?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:21 (fourteen years ago) link

if you sell an ipod to someone on the street, you only make one sale

if you sell from an entire binder full of cd's to people on the street, you can make multiple sales

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

xxpost: I was being entirely earnest

In all honesty, I use mine more for computer backup stuff than I do CDs. I stopped carrying music in them after the travel debacle where I left one on a plane and never recovered it.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Really, kingkongvsgodzilla? (I wasn't really mad, btw, I was just jokingly swearing.) But when you said that, I realized you're probably right . . . I don't think anything's changed with the material they use on the inside of those binders, has it?

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:25 (fourteen years ago) link

You need to get the ones with the little dots.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Do they all have little dots? I can't tell if you're making fun of me, but I guess it doesn't matter either way.

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I gave a couple of these binders to the charity shop and now I really miss them.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:27 (fourteen years ago) link

heard this guy sells great binders. also mp3s.

I swear to god when I was planning to ditch all my jewel cases in May 2002, I went into best buy and there were two types of sleeves for CD binders - one that was normal, and one that had little dots. the little dots ones had a sticker on them that said something like "new cd-protecting dots designed by top engineers at microsoft" or something like that.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I think there are DJs that still use CDs, and they burn CD mixes and then put those in those CD binders and bring them to DJ on their CDDJ Set-ups. I've seen it before, I swear.

the who cares (okamax), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

the cd-protecting dots are an RIAA hoax intended to ruin your collection & make you have to re-buy it

Trey Tsongas (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

however if you scratch them open, they contain ice cream

Trey Tsongas (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:01 (fourteen years ago) link

if you tape your collection, be sure to BREAK OFF the tabs on top so you don't accidentally record over them. VERY important.

OCONDOR (Pt.1), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:02 (fourteen years ago) link

these are probably ok if they're small-ish but one of the dumbest things i ever did was pack a huge-ass caselogic full of cds and liner notes when i was 14.

If you plan on hauling them around in your car, they end up being pretty unwieldy.

Neden Raggett (some dude), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:12 (fourteen years ago) link

The thing I hate most about binders is all these bands hire moron graphic designers who think they're clever and don't put the fucking name of the band or album on the goddamn cd.

Kerm, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah. I had two CDs that just have pictures of clouds on them. A few that were just plain black.

Neden Raggett (some dude), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 19:38 (fourteen years ago) link

It's a joke because his name is pronounced "bin-der" not "bind-er".

Wait, are you Seth MacFarlane?

No.

Oh wow. Sorry for assuming you were mocking me! That's nuts.

And contra what some people are saying, I'm pretty sure my case did scratch my CDs. But it was cheap and poorly-designed.

The problem with the CD binder is that when you leave it places you lose all your CDs. Not that I have ever done that.
