I’d also remove the schoolboy q from the tinashe track. 212 already has the cunnilingus covered.

I'm not gonna bother checking the stats but it seems like way more stuff from the first half of the decade placed than stuff from the second half. Is this just because as we get further away in time a stronger consensus naturally forms or because the musical landscape of ilx just became more fragmented as the decade progressed?

silverfish, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:05 (one year ago) link

Fewer commenters.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:07 (one year ago) link

Seems weird to have a "why didn't Taylor Swift do better?" take when she had 3 in the top 77 but I still kind of feel that way, to me "Shake It Off" and to a lesser extent "We Are Never Ever" were decade-defining pop hits and that "Shake It Off" didn't even crack top 200 startled me. But maybe you weirdos just don't like it?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:10 (one year ago) link

Don't like it'ers gonna don't like it don't like it don't like it don't like it don't like it.

Which Swift tracks would Morbs have voted for?

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:11 (one year ago) link

Shake It Off (apart from the terrible This. Sick. Beat. section) is better than Call Me Maybe

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:12 (one year ago) link

that’s not true

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:15 (one year ago) link

I remember Shake It Off being widely derided on here when it came out. So no surprise from me to see it miss out.

cajunsunday, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

I'm no Taylor hater (voted for "Lover") but I still can't stand "Shake It Off." It is one of the few songs that I regularly hear on the radio these days that always sends me reaching for the dial the second I hear it start up.

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

I am surprised We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together or I Knew You Were Trouble didn't place, though I didn't vote for either but All Too Well seems to have collected the Red vote which is fair enough I guess. I just thought Red was peak Taylor not 1989 but seems like I am in the minority there.

Will (kruezer2), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:21 (one year ago) link

Big lead pop singles from the past few Taylor Swift albums have not faired well here. If there was going to be another Taylor Swift song showing up on the list, it would have been "Treacherous".

MarkoP, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:23 (one year ago) link

thx moka and ufo for the hard work. nothing I voted for placed but that's unsurprising. think about 10 of the top 100 are songs that I wouldn't turn off.

oscar bravo, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:45 (one year ago) link

yeah thanks pollrunners!

definitely too low for Hold Yuh moka! everyone should listen to it for sure.

Will (kruezer2), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:51 (one year ago) link

Cannot believe Balloon didn't place.

Akanamali was my No. 1 and probably one of the more impactful musical discoveries of my life up to this point. That song still moves me deeply every time I hear it. Inspector Norse was my #2.

Another song I was SHOCKED didn't place:
DJ Koze - Pick Up

Way way way too much CRJ, LDR and Arianna Grande and similar type stuff. HAIM didn't need to be here either. Taylor Swift a bit over represented too. Not enough Simmy or Rosalía. Good lord. But I guess to be expected given the vote splitting and volume of tracks to choose from

octobeard, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:52 (one year ago) link

“Hold Yuh” is indirectly massive in latinamerica and spain via “una vaina loca” you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t recognize the melody.

There’s the version by Fuego which was a massive hit. The version by Ozuna and Manuel Turrizo which was also a massive hit (probably bigger tbh, it has 1 billion plays on youtube) and my favorite version Rakas’ “abrazame (uproot andy rmx)” which isn’t really popular but is a super fun track.

I like how Taylor Swift peaked at 72 and there are people saying that there's too much of her on here and others saying there's not enough.

MarkoP, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:02 (one year ago) link

Oh wait the ozuna track is a different “vaina loca” that doesn’t sample “hold yuh”… I’m thinking of another one… just a minute

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:04 (one year ago) link

Ah yeah it’s Rauw Alejandro x Farruko.

So anyways here’s 3 latin tracks inspired by of “hold yuh” in order of popularity:

Fuego - una vaina loca
Rauw Alejandro & Farruko - fantasias
Los Rakas - Abrazame (uproot andy hold yuh)

the big triumph of the poll to me was javiera mena making the top 20

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:08 (one year ago) link

Yeah sorry I should have led with thanks so much Moka, great rollout, looking forward to albums!!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:11 (one year ago) link

You should extend the Albums Poll another week so no one who wants to see this tragedy happen again can vote

marcel the shell with swag on (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:12 (one year ago) link

In the last five years particularly, but maybe for longer, it seems like everyone on ILM has retreated to particular rolling genre threads that interest them, and fewer general interest/artist-specific threads are posted every day. When it comes time to vote in polls, people emerge and are then shocked that what they're so familiar with is actually something the rest of the board knows very little about.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:13 (one year ago) link

I'm not necessarily shocked by that (though it's a little hard for me to understand why more ppl here aren't into, say, Summer Walker) - but I am sometimes surprised by the artists/tracks that do gather consensus.

Panda bear, my gentle friend (morrisp), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:15 (one year ago) link

it seems like everyone on ILM has retreated to particular rolling genre threads that interest them

it's also that each of those threads didn't generally have enough consensus among their denizens to really breach the top 100 on their own much

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:20 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I'm not surprised something like Pooley or Bubble Pop! didn't top the poll, it's just that the consensus is getting more and more tasteful and 'sophisticated' by the year, and I find it kinda dull.

"gangnam style" being the highest placing kpop track is an indictment of the board though

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:33 (one year ago) link

ugh no Rosalia in the 200

nashwan, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:37 (one year ago) link

I Am The Best as second highest placing kpop track is good taste, though :) Fingers crossed for Pink Tape in the album poll, btw.

Frederik B, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:38 (one year ago) link

Kpop is bigger than ever but has featured less and less on the year-end polls here. Maybe because it's so broad now and the most globally popularly acts (BTS, Blackpink) are not really releasing the most interesting music. So the genre fans gather in smaller groups around lesser-known artists.

For this chart though you could imagine something like 'I Am the Best' by 2NE1 featuring. Maybe people are tired of the 2NE1 becoming ubiquitous.

abcfsk, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:41 (one year ago) link

Taylor would surely have suffered from vote splitting a bit too as seem to recall there were a *lot* of her tracks nominated xps

groovypanda, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:47 (one year ago) link

no future no thug in the top 200 means y’all were living in a completely different decade than i was hahah

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:47 (one year ago) link

i was the number one voter for “stoner,” that song completely changed the game and still sounds like nothing else

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:48 (one year ago) link

I was hoping for Playboi Carti. Should’ve voted Magnolia.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:48 (one year ago) link

kpop has been on a bit of a decline in the last few years, there's still stuff i really enjoy but it's not anywhere as consistently exciting as it was at its ~2011 to ~2017 peak. combination of the industry running out of ideas a little & not pushing forward in the way they used to + BTS's success leading to blander sounds in attempts to break into the west

but yeah not even "i am the best" making the top 100 was a shame, let alone say, "red flavor"

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:49 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I listen to less and less Kpop these days too (though Feel My Rhythm by Red Velvet will make it very high on my list this year). Just listened to IDOL right now, though, and it honestly sounded like a classic. One Direction didn't make gqom-tracks.

Frederik B, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:54 (one year ago) link

re: taylor the two best-liked singles from 1989 & the cult-favourite red album track placed and i would have been surprised if she'd done much better in this poll, there's a fair amount of contrast between the enthusiasm for her singles & her albums here

my suggestion to moka was to do "you need to calm down" as a joke #20

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:55 (one year ago) link

absolutely going to be heavily campaigning heavily for "feel my rhythm" this year, and yeah i loved "idol", pretty daring and the last time BTS did anything really worthwhile at all

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:56 (one year ago) link

Thanks to the poll runners and as always, the images were excellent.

Definitely good to see some things I only ever see discussed or praised on ILM make the cut - Sun-E, Javiera, Diddy Dirty Money, KING, Pachanga Boys, Richard Dawson - even if I don't necessarily like them all myself.

Twelves, Friday, 19 August 2022 21:31 (one year ago) link

I really like what’s underneath the top 100, so just to let you know I’ll be updating the spotify playlist to a top 200.

I like how Taylor Swift peaked at 72 and there are people saying that there's too much of her on here and others saying there's not enough.

She peaked at 58 and there's 3 tracks here. I don't think any artist this decade warranted more than 2 other than say maybe Kendrick. But I have him has my "Artist of the Decade". A lot of banal pop is preventing some real classics (Pick Up) and ILM classics (Simmy - Umahlalela, Rosalía - anything off of El Mal Querer). Shit even Low got snubbed a bit.

octobeard, Friday, 19 August 2022 22:27 (one year ago) link

Playlist updated. These five were not available on spotify: #120 Joanna Newsom, #132 Blawan, #138 Guru, #157 Andres, #180 Destroyer
