That's gotta be a joke? Pining for "Fuck You?!"

Chris L, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:18 (one year ago) link

I mean, it's not very good, I'm not sure why Whiney picked that one out.

Could I have pushed 2NE1 up into the main poll had I voted? We shall never be certain, alas...

emil.y, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:18 (one year ago) link

Perfect top five. I still love all those songs so much. Inspector Norse was my number one and Run Away With Me was my number two. They both soundtracked so many happy moments in the last ten years.

Thanks so much to the poll runners for this. I feel emotional.

And here I was hoping that people still cared about "Bring in the Katz".

MarkoP, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:20 (one year ago) link

i did not expect at all the #1!

thanks guys for running the poll. loved the graphics – the font and colour were A++!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 19 August 2022 17:21 (one year ago) link

103. Toyboy & Robin - Jaded

Wow, I really overestimated the impact of this song had on this community. Was my #2. I've probably watched the video 100 time.

Norse was my #1. Just a joyous piece of music that I still play regularly. Happy it won.

The only other thing I have to say about this poll is that I'm glad KING did so well.

beard papa, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:21 (one year ago) link

Yeah the amount of love for KING was surprising. I thought only 1 song of them would make it. Happy to be proven wrong. I would've thought The 1975 would be the ones with 3 songs instead based on previous eoy polls.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 17:22 (one year ago) link

Hey we almost had a poll with no Drake! Rihanna saved him.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 17:23 (one year ago) link

I do like Hotline Bling tho

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 17:23 (one year ago) link

Thank you Moka and ufo, poll was a lot of fun even with all the batching

Bee OK, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:24 (one year ago) link

Thank you ufo and Moka, really enjoyed the rollout (and images) during a very busy week at work.

Surprised how much of the top 100 I actually like i.e. most of it. Great #1 too.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:24 (one year ago) link

I'm off to continue doing images for the albums poll.

Anyone cares to give it a go to compile a top 10 per year on this poll to compare it with previous eoy top 10s?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 17:25 (one year ago) link

And here I was hoping that people still cared about "Bring in the Katz".

― MarkoP, Friday, August 19, 2022 1:20 PM

Ahhh dammit I must have skimmed right past it when making my ballot.

HEY GRIFF

Lol bitching

Bee OK, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

ha ah shit i forgot about bring in the katz

nxd, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:35 (one year ago) link

Thanks for the rollout. I need to spend more time with the playlist: I'm more of an albums person/rockist so I feel like I've probably heard most of these songs, but don't know them by name apart from a handful of inescapables. I voted for six songs that placed, including #1. Images look like a high fashion mag; everyone is beautiful.

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Friday, 19 August 2022 17:37 (one year ago) link

Thanks, all!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 August 2022 17:44 (one year ago) link

can we make Moka's image for Inspector Norse the new borad description? I know it wasn't planned but what a punchline!

rob, Friday, 19 August 2022 17:47 (one year ago) link

Sophisti-pop and tasteful disco seem to have taken over this poll even more than the usual ILM poll. The top 20 would make a killer playlist for a high-end retail shop, at least until Schoolboy Q shows up and starts rapping about cunnilingus.

Maybe it has to do with the decline of generalist music-review publications and the rise of curated streaming platforms, but the focus seems to have narrowed. Of course I'm as guilty as anyone of sticking to my knitting. If I had voted, my ballot would have reflected my own circumscribed universe of rock/metal/jazz/weirdness. Still I enjoyed seeing what people liked from the previous decade. Thanks to all who participated.

o. nate, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:04 (one year ago) link

Thanks to the pollrunners!

Inspector Norse is a worthy winner

paolo, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:04 (one year ago) link

Pretty surprised these all missed the cut

102 David Bowie - Blackstar
103 Toyboy & Robin - Jaded
104 Usher - Climax
106 Caroline Polachek - So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings
107 Girl Unit - Wut
116 Eric Church - Springsteen
125 Tegan and Sara - Closer
127 Billie Eilish - Bad Guy
135 Lindstrøm & Christabelle - Lovesick

Indexed, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:24 (one year ago) link

thank you to the pollrunners! and the images are great.

pleased with norse as #1, it makes me smile every time.

biggest discovery for me is 2 On which i had never heard 2 On before. I was loving it until flint flossy turned up.

calumerio, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:26 (one year ago) link

for a while "boy problems" was also in the top 10 if you want to know just how silly it could have been

will post the stats thread soon

as you can see 200-102 was where nearly everything people were missing was hiding out

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:37 (one year ago) link

honestly... a pretty great top 3

J0rdan S., Friday, 19 August 2022 18:41 (one year ago) link

132 Blawan - Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?

Quite a fall from grace there. I still voted for it.

Bait Kush (Eric H.), Friday, 19 August 2022 18:49 (one year ago) link

weird #1 considering barely any house music was nominated

brimstead, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:50 (one year ago) link

no waka :-(

brimstead, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:51 (one year ago) link

I haven't really spent any time with "212" in several years, but I've been listening to it on repeat for a bit now and that is a fucking GREAT song. Inspired, magical, all of the things.

Shame she's been a trainwreck since then.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 19 August 2022 18:53 (one year ago) link

gonna listen to this full top 100 over the weekend. Enjoying it very much so far. A lot of this consensus pop stuff is actually pretty far from what I listen to usually so it's actually a nice change of pace for me.

In case anyone who would be interested missed it upthread here's the Tidal playlist: https://tidal.com/browse/playlist/4abe3016-8c8e-485d-ad65-627a6c1216d5

silverfish, Friday, 19 August 2022 18:58 (one year ago) link

“Inspector Norse” and “Realiti (demo)” rank highly on my personal top 20 of the decade so seeing them at the top of the poll makes me very happy.

The way in which the two songs keep building and subtly changing sections while remaining in the same gear is gorgeous. So many little details going on that I never get bored of them.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 18:58 (one year ago) link

Honestly a pretty good top 10 imho. I’d probably remove one of the CRJ (I guess “call me maybe” would be the one I’d ax) and make space for the Susanne Sundfor at #11, which I don’t think I had heard before and it’s pretty good.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:01 (one year ago) link

I’d also remove the schoolboy q from the tinashe track. 212 already has the cunnilingus covered.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:04 (one year ago) link

I'm not gonna bother checking the stats but it seems like way more stuff from the first half of the decade placed than stuff from the second half. Is this just because as we get further away in time a stronger consensus naturally forms or because the musical landscape of ilx just became more fragmented as the decade progressed?

silverfish, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:05 (one year ago) link

Fewer commenters.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:07 (one year ago) link

Seems weird to have a "why didn't Taylor Swift do better?" take when she had 3 in the top 77 but I still kind of feel that way, to me "Shake It Off" and to a lesser extent "We Are Never Ever" were decade-defining pop hits and that "Shake It Off" didn't even crack top 200 startled me. But maybe you weirdos just don't like it?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:10 (one year ago) link

Don't like it'ers gonna don't like it don't like it don't like it don't like it don't like it.

Bait Kush (Eric H.), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:10 (one year ago) link

Which Swift tracks would Morbs have voted for?

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:11 (one year ago) link

Shake It Off (apart from the terrible This. Sick. Beat. section) is better than Call Me Maybe

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:12 (one year ago) link

that’s not true

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:15 (one year ago) link

I remember Shake It Off being widely derided on here when it came out. So no surprise from me to see it miss out.

cajunsunday, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

I'm no Taylor hater (voted for "Lover") but I still can't stand "Shake It Off." It is one of the few songs that I regularly hear on the radio these days that always sends me reaching for the dial the second I hear it start up.

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

I am surprised We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together or I Knew You Were Trouble didn't place, though I didn't vote for either but All Too Well seems to have collected the Red vote which is fair enough I guess. I just thought Red was peak Taylor not 1989 but seems like I am in the minority there.

Will (kruezer2), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:21 (one year ago) link

Big lead pop singles from the past few Taylor Swift albums have not faired well here. If there was going to be another Taylor Swift song showing up on the list, it would have been "Treacherous".

MarkoP, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:23 (one year ago) link

thx moka and ufo for the hard work. nothing I voted for placed but that's unsurprising. think about 10 of the top 100 are songs that I wouldn't turn off.

oscar bravo, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:45 (one year ago) link

yeah thanks pollrunners!

definitely too low for Hold Yuh moka! everyone should listen to it for sure.

Will (kruezer2), Friday, 19 August 2022 19:51 (one year ago) link

Cannot believe Balloon didn't place.

Akanamali was my No. 1 and probably one of the more impactful musical discoveries of my life up to this point. That song still moves me deeply every time I hear it. Inspector Norse was my #2.

Another song I was SHOCKED didn't place:
DJ Koze - Pick Up

Way way way too much CRJ, LDR and Arianna Grande and similar type stuff. HAIM didn't need to be here either. Taylor Swift a bit over represented too. Not enough Simmy or Rosalía. Good lord. But I guess to be expected given the vote splitting and volume of tracks to choose from

octobeard, Friday, 19 August 2022 19:52 (one year ago) link

“Hold Yuh” is indirectly massive in latinamerica and spain via “una vaina loca” you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t recognize the melody.

There’s the version by Fuego which was a massive hit. The version by Ozuna and Manuel Turrizo which was also a massive hit (probably bigger tbh, it has 1 billion plays on youtube) and my favorite version Rakas’ “abrazame (uproot andy rmx)” which isn’t really popular but is a super fun track.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 19 August 2022 20:00 (one year ago) link

I like how Taylor Swift peaked at 72 and there are people saying that there's too much of her on here and others saying there's not enough.

MarkoP, Friday, 19 August 2022 20:02 (one year ago) link

Oh wait the ozuna track is a different “vaina loca” that doesn’t sample “hold yuh”… I’m thinking of another one… just a minute
