just want to praise Girl Unit’s Wut, which is not going to show up. It was the ILM #1 of 2010, no? but it’s been disparaged here since then. It still sounds very dramatic and utterly fantastic to me, such downcast euphoria replete with piled-up cartoon vocals and airhorn

Like flopson I've been thinking about nostalgia a lot this week...it's kind of hard to disentangle strong memories of e.g. Skott posting about moombahton or a few people going mad for Toyboy & Robin from an idea of what actually got a majority of votes in the EOY polls. My memories tend to specific moments that were meaningful for me, so I shouldn't surprised when the end-of-decade poll doesn't line up with "what ILM meant to me".

Putting together my ballot was a really fun exercise in revisiting those memories :)

Oh yeah, "Jaded" was the other one. I could see that and Inspector Norse being 1 & 2.

I've ignored the reunions of the shoegaze bands I liked as a wee bairn. I shall cling to ufo's assessment of that Slowdive track as I'd prefer to imagine that the LP is more interesting than that lol.

"Adorn" was on my ballot for ages but naturally I eventually switched to a Miguel nom that was probably always destined for #527 or something.

that is exactly how I feel, the tracks I voted for are important to me for personal reasons, for the moments of connection and social occasions that meant a lot to me. I like that this poll is an amalgam of a bunch of different takes

"Native Land" is genuinely... haunting. (Yes, I should have known this already; I've had more than enough tip-offs that We Are King had been a big deal during my Inattentive Years.)

Don't know if people rate it now, but REALiTi - Demo is a track + video that I felt so many connections to at the time, and it still seems really good to me.

"ass on the floor" really is the greatest, the overlapping vocals in the chorus & then swizz beatz's hook coming in over the top halfway through is just transcendent.

I think Akanamali was the only African song to make the top 10 any year of the decade, so realistically it was probably the only one that could hope to make this list. And if High Lights can make it, Akanamali could have too, it's just a quirk of the vote.

That said, I am a bit bored by the results. It's very pop, yes, but a lot of the pop is of the very tasteful kind. What was more POP than K-pop and azonto last decade? Might be nostalgia, but I think when I began reading this board, it seemed ahead of the pop charts, but now it honestly feels like it's lacking behind. It'd be more fun to just listen to the Spotify Top 50, even though Tobias Rahim has four of the top six songs in Denmark.

Still expecting two dancehall bangers in the top 20. One PC music offshoot too. My k-pop pick is Girl Front, which I am sad to concede now is probably not placing. Too excited to guess which other songs from my top 15 might place...probably only one of them, but it will be elating if ILX has suddenly decided some emo and pop-punk ranks amongst the undeniable.

In the spirit of breastcrawl's mithering, we definitely also need at least one more Horrible Imagocore Avant Nonsense*; only been what, two so far? Three if we count gecs. Fingers crossed for annoyance
