here's the recap

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:14 (one year ago) link

"adorn" - too low! shocked this didn't end up top 20 but then i did vote for "coffee"
"money trees" - surprised this is now the consensus pick from gkmc?
"sugar for the pill" - i love this album but what is this doing here, it's one of the weakest tracks. at least when it placed in the 2017 poll half the votes were for the avalon emerson remix
"royals" - i still hate this!

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:19 (one year ago) link

In terms of things I associate strongly w/ILM that haven't made a showing yet. How do people feel about this stuff in 2022? Duke Dumont and A*M*E - Need U (100%) - Rolling UK dance pop interzone thread🕸. It's been a while for me, but I think I'd still enjoy my personal faves

“Thin Lines” by Kidnap (Kid) ft. Lotti just missed my ballot. I’ve been playing it quite a lot again recently, because several amapiano tracks that came out in the past few months (including two or three on Kabza’s KoA II album) employ very similar-sounding watery keys.

well there is one outrageous afropop banger I voted for that I am still hopeful about...

if this is “Akrakabo” then maybe don’t get your hopes up too high

TURN THIS MUTHA OUT! It's the Alternate 1970s Albums Poll on ILX — Results Thread

this is the alternate 70s poll results

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:24 (one year ago) link

haha you see right through me breastcrawl

i won't give up...there's another London track we all rather need, from a bobbins-y yet curiously folkish direction

there's been a lot of grousing from people whose specialist subjects haven't been much represented so far, but there are a lot of subjects in that boat. we almost didn't have any metal lol. but yeah the lack of any PC Music, afropop, much rap and so on can be filed alongside the lack of (much) bobbins, rock, psych-pop, emo, footwork, etc etc. then again this is very clearly a pop poll and pop hegemony will always hold sway

but who knows eh. who knows

imago, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:25 (one year ago) link

lack of any PC Music

not exactly the same but surely 100 gecs are the rep for that here

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:27 (one year ago) link

I really hope not, no.

isn’t ironic, don’t you think…

everything good about PC music (and there is plenty) is not in 100 gecs

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:32 (one year ago) link

footwork is a good call too, I nominated two tracks but will be chuffed if either got a second vote.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:32 (one year ago) link

isn’t *it* ironic - gah

time for bed

I was one of the no.1 voters for the Burial track. It's incredible. I always joke to myself it is his Westlife stepping of the stools track.

Also High Lights wow. Amazing.

kraudive, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:39 (one year ago) link

Sugar For The Pill is undeniable for a 1990 shoegaze kid. Where do think Coldplay got that shit from?

kraudive, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:41 (one year ago) link

It's very 6music but

kraudive, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:42 (one year ago) link

lol, fair, fair

imago, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:45 (one year ago) link

I didn't vote for Archie but I could have. Someone commented on the singing but cmon. Some of us miss The Pastels.

kraudive, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:46 (one year ago) link

Long shot guesses…

Avalon Emerson - The Frontier
LOONA/Yves - New

Will (kruezer2), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:48 (one year ago) link

Would passion fruit hit the top 20?

Will (kruezer2), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:49 (one year ago) link

just want to praise Girl Unit’s Wut, which is not going to show up. It was the ILM #1 of 2010, no? but it’s been disparaged here since then. It still sounds very dramatic and utterly fantastic to me, such downcast euphoria replete with piled-up cartoon vocals and airhorn

Dan S, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:53 (one year ago) link

I think "Wut" is still showing up

Bait Kush (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:54 (one year ago) link

i love wut

nxd, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:54 (one year ago) link

would love to see more top 20 guesses though because there's one fantastic track no one has even mentioned as a possibility that will surely catch everyone off-guard

it’s been a few days but I distinctly remember mentioning Alexis Jordan’s “Happiness”!

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:56 (one year ago) link

Ah Wut was my last cut, would be great to see show up.

Other top 20 guesses..

XO Tour Llif3
Wrecking Ball
The Riverbed

Will (kruezer2), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:57 (one year ago) link

There are at least 2 Robyn tracks coming, right?

kraudive, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:58 (one year ago) link

Losing You

Will (kruezer2), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:58 (one year ago) link

oooh, I would love to see “XO Tour Llif3” show up!

Alexis Jordan’s “Happiness”

had never even heard of this before but wow it's great, let's just pretend it did place

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 00:03 (one year ago) link

there's definitely more definite placers than can fit in a top 20 - will be a weird ILM poll if Javiera Mena doesn't show up

TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Friday, 19 August 2022 00:04 (one year ago) link

think she reliably showed up at position 27 for a couple of years on end, she won’t be going top 20 now - also: strong vote splitting alert!

_Alexis Jordan’s “Happiness”_

this is one track I regret not campaigning for, and I wouldn’t have even thought of it had someone else not nominated it

Like flopson I've been thinking about nostalgia a lot this week...it's kind of hard to disentangle strong memories of e.g. Skott posting about moombahton or a few people going mad for Toyboy & Robin from an idea of what actually got a majority of votes in the EOY polls. My memories tend to specific moments that were meaningful for me, so I shouldn't surprised when the end-of-decade poll doesn't line up with "what ILM meant to me".

Putting together my ballot was a really fun exercise in revisiting those memories :)

TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Friday, 19 August 2022 00:12 (one year ago) link

Oh yeah, "Jaded" was the other one. I could see that and Inspector Norse being 1 & 2.

beard papa, Friday, 19 August 2022 00:18 (one year ago) link

I've ignored the reunions of the shoegaze bands I liked as a wee bairn. I shall cling to ufo's assessment of that Slowdive track as I'd prefer to imagine that the LP is more interesting than that lol.

"Adorn" was on my ballot for ages but naturally I eventually switched to a Miguel nom that was probably always destined for #527 or something.

that someone being none other than dyl, I just checked.

her followup singles “Good Girl” and “Hush Hush” were great too and have lost none of their lustre - and that was all she wrote, more or less

I love Toyboy & Robin's Jaded and it was high on my list but it is another one I don't see placing

that is exactly how I feel, the tracks I voted for are important to me for personal reasons, for the moments of connection and social occasions that meant a lot to me. I like that this poll is an amalgam of a bunch of different takes

Dan S, Friday, 19 August 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

"Native Land" is genuinely... haunting. (Yes, I should have known this already; I've had more than enough tip-offs that We Are King had been a big deal during my Inattentive Years.)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 19 August 2022 01:21 (one year ago) link

Don't know if people rate it now, but REALiTi - Demo is a track + video that I felt so many connections to at the time, and it still seems really good to me.

Dan S, Friday, 19 August 2022 01:56 (one year ago) link

My #1

Bee OK, Friday, 19 August 2022 02:09 (one year ago) link

mine too

Dan S, Friday, 19 August 2022 02:19 (one year ago) link

"Realiti" is one of those pop songs I've barely tired of over the years. "No Tears Left to Cry" is another

Vinnie, Friday, 19 August 2022 02:23 (one year ago) link

Only had 2 of my ballot place, Lapsley and Peggy Gou. I think there’s about 6 more which might place but wouldn’t be surprised if none of them do.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 19 August 2022 07:21 (one year ago) link

I was this minute old when I learnt that Dawn Richard was in Diddy-Dirty Money

imago, Friday, 19 August 2022 07:27 (one year ago) link

can’t wait till you find out about Danity Kane

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Friday, 19 August 2022 07:38 (one year ago) link

yeah that's where her following here came from originally (& i wasn't even here at the time)

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 07:39 (one year ago) link

"ass on the floor" really is the greatest, the overlapping vocals in the chorus & then swizz beatz's hook coming in over the top halfway through is just transcendent.

there's a clear enough throughline between the tracks dawn co-wrote on LTTP and her solo work really

ufo, Friday, 19 August 2022 08:04 (one year ago) link

I think Akanamali was the only African song to make the top 10 any year of the decade, so realistically it was probably the only one that could hope to make this list. And if High Lights can make it, Akanamali could have too, it's just a quirk of the vote.

That said, I am a bit bored by the results. It's very pop, yes, but a lot of the pop is of the very tasteful kind. What was more POP than K-pop and azonto last decade? Might be nostalgia, but I think when I began reading this board, it seemed ahead of the pop charts, but now it honestly feels like it's lacking behind. It'd be more fun to just listen to the Spotify Top 50, even though Tobias Rahim has four of the top six songs in Denmark.

Frederik B, Friday, 19 August 2022 09:24 (one year ago) link

2019 had "sondela" and "anybody" too
