already bracing for too much Taylor Swift and 1975

no placement for the latter yet is a bit odd given the presence of other vote-split-defying ILM pets

"archie, marry me"

The chorus to this song sounds like the person emerged from 12 years of homeschooling having never heard singing or music before and was given the song to sing and they recorded the first take.

Something shut off for me with Bjork with "Medulla" and I've never been able to get into anything by her from that point on, with the exception of "Stonemilker."

I like the Alvvays song, good memories, it would make my top 200. Anyway, one thing I voted for has placed (the Talabot remix of "You Belong in my Arms"). It's an unusual poll thread experience for me because I've heard almost everything before from previous EOY rollouts, a bit of the surprise element is missing. Hoping for more surprises in the top 60!

also interesting to contrast the results (so far) with my experience of being on ILM all through the decade - is it really ILM's last word on the 2010s if Hot Fruit doesn't place?

still confidently hoping for Nadia Oh at #1

Seeing stuff like Katy Perry and other pop hits from this decade here (and the 1975 to come) exemplifies my problem with pop music in this era: it's like the 1980s if there were no Princes or Kate Bushes on the charts so people ended up aggressively stanning Paul Young or Laura Branigan.

Chris L, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:28 (one year ago) link

My prediction for the next 20 is like 3 votesplit Kendrick tracks to drop, probably not including the one I voted for

ban, buddy (imago), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:41 (one year ago) link

some people are stanning Laura Branigan even today, and not without good reason.

I mean, you must be familiar with “Self Control”, a very high ranking top 100 Track of the 1980s.

cajunsunday, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:58 (one year ago) link

Idk if "Archie Marry Me" would have made my ballot but I do enjoy it. The lyrical conceit of her trying to bargain with a bf who "will not risk the alimony" is clever and amusing, in a Stephin Merritt sort of way, in addition to the tune being cute and singable. It's the album after this one that I actually listened to as a whole.

During the summer, take me sailing out on the Atlantic
I won't set my sights on other seas, there is no need to panic
So honey take me by the hand and we can sign some papers
Forget the invitations, floral arrangements and bread makers

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:59 (one year ago) link

I didn't vote ;_;

emil.y, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 13:04 (one year ago) link

That's a surprising track to see consensus behind, especially since it didn't place in 2011. Great song but not a particular standout on Kaputt, imo - the album is stronger as a whole

Vinnie, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 13:04 (one year ago) link

it's the album's centrepiece, the clear standout to me at least

Next time I hear about how difficult the life of an artist is, I'll be thinking of Dan Bejar standing alone in the Belle Époque Hycroft Manor with his shirt open and looking very grave

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 13:18 (one year ago) link

The biggest problem with "Get Lucky": all I needed was the 30-second tease released before the single. This is not a full song, and Pharrell's voice is actively a menace on this track.

If we still cared about this sort of thing, I'd have thought "Good 4 You" last year and "As It Was" today would be the picks.

I’m not even going to check Spotify to see if there’s a “Let Gucky” by Paft Dunk ft. Warrell Philliams & Rile Nodgers, because of course there will be. #so2010s

This poll is missing some grit, it's all glossy

I admire all the stuff that is not there though, as indicated by the lack of consensus in points. I'm also looking forward to seeing individual lists, since I had zero time to do anything else in the last three weeks than vote and become a father.

As It Was and the song with the Tom Tom Club sample are the only contenders

just for the record...

“Hard Times” has a firm spring in its step, which is good, but where’s the beef? where’s the grit? at this point the rollout could do with a healthy dose of Burna
