yeah that seems fair

thinkmanship (sleeve), Friday, 12 August 2022 15:42 (one year ago) link

Clearly they figured they were sparing both of you the trouble once you pointed out they didn't even have a complete product on top of the shipping increase.

Evan, Friday, 12 August 2022 15:46 (one year ago) link

well, HD asked the question anyway! seller then evaporated, which is rude and shady.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 12 August 2022 15:48 (one year ago) link

why? they sent the refund!

― thinkmanship (sleeve), Friday, August 12, 2022 11:23 AM (fifty-four minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

Because people should have complete communications and not leave a buyer sitting there in the dark wondering what happened.

peace, man, Friday, 12 August 2022 16:20 (one year ago) link

sure but actual negative feedback seems harsh there, somebody needs to rip me off before I do that

thinkmanship (sleeve), Friday, 12 August 2022 16:24 (one year ago) link

The positive/negative/neutral system just isn't great overall... tons of these edge cases. Too late to change it now, the whole site's built around it. Also, as a buyer, I'm usually just going to skim the negatives and make sure there are no red flags. But something like HD's experience - which probably does belong in "neutral" - is also something I'd care about.

In practice, the best thing you can do for yourself is only buy from people who, if they've got a lot of transactions, have over a 99% positive rating.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 12 August 2022 16:29 (one year ago) link

this seller seems a bit thick, I couldn’t imagine having g the stones to ask for more $, lol wonder what his vinyl grading is like

brimstead, Friday, 12 August 2022 18:52 (one year ago) link

Neutral feedback is useful for these cases. I've only left neutral once - for a seller who had five items out of stock (and issued a partial refund), then tried to get me to accept the CDs without jewel cases because he hadn't factored in shipping cost increases. Sorry, not my problem. Then the jewel cases arrived all smashed up because he packed them like an idiot. All of this could have been avoided if the seller had kept proper inventory and up to date shipping costs. In the end the CDs were as described (apart from the smashed cases) so I was satisfied. Won't be buying from that seller again, though.

I think neutral was appropriate because it wasn't a terrible trade - but also wasn't great. And other buyers need to be aware it could if be a frustrating experience.

The Ghost Club, Friday, 12 August 2022 20:32 (one year ago) link

I should add all my other Discogs experiences have been great. The best sellers tend to grade conservatively - I've received many CDs and LPs graded VG+ that were closer to NM.

Shipping costs and the weak New Zealand dollar have put me off buying much lately though.

The Ghost Club, Friday, 12 August 2022 20:41 (one year ago) link

I ordered a PM Dawn LP from Italy that showed up at my house 4 days after I paid. The shipping was $10. I have no idea what they did, or how they did it, but it was amazing. I ordered a PM Dawn 12" at the same time from a US seller and his item arrived 10 days after the item from Italy.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 12 August 2022 20:46 (one year ago) link

Wild! I've heard horror stories about the Italian mail system, so I've only ordered from there once. It arrived in a reasonable timeframe, but there was no tracking on it so I was on pins and needles. 4 days is crazy.

I've never left a neutral or negative feedback...usually I'll just forego feedback at all if I was underwhelmed with the experience...but the one time I left a little bit of criticism in a POSITIVE feedback the seller freaked out and left a rude reply and banned me from ever buying from him again. All I said was that a cover with water stains on it shouldn't be graded NM.

does anyone in usa have experience buying records from jamaica?

i am not concerned about the seller (what little negative feedback there is seems to revolve around condition of records and not getting how tropical climates affect vinyl) but i am wondering if their postal service is relatively reliable? seems like proximity to gulf states would make it not too challenging to get records over safely

the late great, Saturday, 13 August 2022 17:03 (one year ago) link

This is a first: I got a porn spam through the messaging service. I didn’t know anyone could contact you outside of a transaction?

look maybe Emilyxs just really wants to show you her nudes, it’s possible

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 14 August 2022 16:24 (one year ago) link

I think everyone got it! also, what's up with this new "Add Friend" function?

thinkmanship (sleeve), Sunday, 14 August 2022 16:42 (one year ago) link

Haha, reminds that awhile back I saw somewhere that Playboy had done a SFW shoot with an influencer wearing a skimpy outfit while looking at used records.

ha, i got that message from Emilyxs as well.

the "add friend" function is not new- as far as i know, it simply creates a private list for you, like bookmarking the user's profile.

I was feeling left out but just got one from Miasx

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Sunday, 14 August 2022 19:34 (one year ago) link

yeah, I've used the friends list to keep track of good sellers... A bunch of clicks later and I can open up tabs for all of them and see if they're selling anything in my wantlist.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 14 August 2022 20:49 (one year ago) link

lol i got that message too...

by the time i visited discogs.com, i had no new message on the site. Either they deleted it for everyone or it was some kind of fake message made to look like a discogs message... that would be much worse, if they lifted users' emails. i have not studied the headers of the spam email.

I guess it was not to be

Any other buyers from New Zealand here? I've tried to bring it to Discogs attention that they are charging GST on freight as well as the goods which is not necessary.

Besides the fact I doubt they even pass this extra collected tax back to the NZ govt the Govt customs website says GST should only be collected on Goods, not insurance or freight. It stings every time I use this site paying GST I know is just being collected as extra fees to line discogs pockets.

https://www.customs.govt.nz/about-us/news/important-notices/new-gst-rules-for-low-value-imported-goods/
"The NZ$1000 threshold is based on the customs value of the goods. This means transport and insurance costs are excluded when determining if GST needs to be charged."

Here's an annoying one: I have on my wantlist the version of Actress' Karma & Desire that comes with a bonus cassette. The only thing distinguishing this version from the other half dozen vinyl versions available is the inclusion of this cassette. Half of the listings for this specify "NO CASSETTE" in the comments, which means it should be listed as the other otherwise identical version (whose color variant is also the same). As for those sellers that do not mention the lack of cassette, I have written three different sellers to confirm that the version they are selling includes it, as per the listing, and all three have replied with some variation of "Oops! Didn't realize there was a cassette. I'll revise the listing." Very frustrating. Thanks for letting me vent.

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 15 August 2022 19:33 (one year ago) link

lol I feel the same way, Paul, I’ve just given up hope on ever getting that cassette. It’s a really good set of tracks!!!

brimstead, Monday, 15 August 2022 19:42 (one year ago) link

I know! I have a digital copy but it just isn't the same. Glad to know I'm not the only one dealing with this, though!

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 15 August 2022 19:51 (one year ago) link

three weeks pass...

I'm always paranoid my record gradin g will be bad and people will angrily get vinyl and demand a refund because it wasn't really VG+ or something

| (Latham Green), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 20:29 (one year ago) link

Am I an idiot, or did they change the seller function to where you have to click on each individual pressing of a record and open a new window to view it, rather than it popping up on the right like it used to?

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 8 September 2022 00:11 (one year ago) link

Nevermind, I figured it out. You just have to click on the text below the artist / release name now, rather than the release itself, otherwise it opens a new window. Which is annoying but whatever

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 8 September 2022 00:16 (one year ago) link

two questions

1.
EU people: does it really cost 35 euros to ship a cassette tape to the US. cuz damn that's a lot

2.
Is the "you must place a minimum order amount from this seller" thing new, or have I just never encountered it before?

sleeve, Saturday, 17 September 2022 20:50 (one year ago) link

1. Don’t know about EU, sounds like price gouging to me. Don’t sell cassettes but UK would probably be 6 or 7 euros.

2. Think that option came in around 2019. I use it, as it’s such a pain looking for a disc and going to post office just for something which I’ve listed for a couple of quid.

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 17 September 2022 22:13 (one year ago) link

am still confused about how the fuck I'm meant to attach an A4 invoice to a CD sized jiffy bag.

I've got away with just ticking Gift on the customs form apart from 1 order to Italy where they had to pay VAT again which I refunded them, luckily Italy doesn't tack on ridiculous "handling fees" like the Royal Mail do so it was only a couple of quid but still, would like to avoid that if possible

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Thursday, 22 September 2022 20:23 (one year ago) link

I just fold the invoice to a quarter of A4, stick it in a plastic wallet and tape it to the back of the padded envelope, leaving the top open so that it can be extracted, unfolded and read.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 22 September 2022 23:09 (one year ago) link

ah I found some A6 ones fairly cheap - tbh didn't really know where to find something like that but sometimes googling does actually work. I guess I could try to fold it so the VAT codes are visible too. thanks!

one month passes...

pricing out hundreds of records for a show next month and it really feels like prices are crashing, so much of this stuff (especially any newer reissue type thing) has median values that are half or less of what they cost new

I track the average item value in my collection just out of curiosity, along with a couple other data points, and it has been declining since early this year

sleeve, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:41 (one year ago) link

I should probably amend the above to "it really feels like used prices are crashing"

sleeve, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:42 (one year ago) link

on the other side of the equation, those formerly-ubiquitous $1 J.R.R. Tolkien spoken word LPs are now going for $20

sleeve, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 00:40 (one year ago) link

There’s a weird thing where former dollar records are now $20 records, $10 records are $5 records, and $5 records are $40 records.

Is there an ilx marketplace

| (Latham Green), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 02:29 (one year ago) link

An ilx marketplace would probably involve posting your records for sale, then other users ripping your taste to shreds.

The Ghost Club, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 03:48 (one year ago) link

Bring it on.

one thing I've noticed is that with the Pound, Euro, and Yen all crashing compared to the US Dollar it's now usually cheaper to import records than it is to buy them domestically. especially if you get a few items at once.

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 15:48 (one year ago) link

mm maybe not the best time to sell vinyl in general

| (Latham Green), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 16:06 (one year ago) link

It's made buying in USD when you're outside the US far too pricey. I can take the hit buying in GBP or Euros but the USD is way too strong against the NZD. Consequently been buying a lot more from Europe and less from the States. Also US shipping prices have never been cost competitive.

But yeah CDs that used to cost like $8 NZD are now close to twice that. Sad Ghost Club. The cheap CD era is ending for now...

The Ghost Club, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 18:54 (one year ago) link

I wonder when CDs will stop being produced for major artists

| (Latham Green), Thursday, 27 October 2022 20:09 (one year ago) link

This buyer keeps messaging me over and over complaining about how much tax (probably import duties) he paid for a record he bought. I’m like “I literally don’t know what you want me to do here; take it up with your government.” In sending me the same message repeatedly I think he’s trying to leave feedback but can’t figure out how. Kinda glad of his incompetence, TBH.

Another left me negative feedback because his record hadn’t arrived after 30 days from Canada to UK. Tracked shipping would have been $60 and I told him before it shipped that intercontinental shipping can take up to 3 months (yes, it’s happened).

It’s been many years since I worked retail but I’m getting that old time feeling again of like “Not only is the customer not always right, they’re likely to be a dick.”

an incomprehensible borefest full of elves (hardcore dilettante), Tuesday, 1 November 2022 10:15 (one year ago) link

Had my first purchase go completely astray in the postal system, and while the seller is being really decent and helpful and chasing it all up, I'm still quietly bummed about the fact that a) he charged £10 P&P for a double album and a single album, but b) didn't send it tracked, only signed-for. £10 feels a lot for postage to not be sending it special delivery or whatever.

bible fumes (stevie), Tuesday, 8 November 2022 14:36 (one year ago) link

postage is expensive unfortunately. people message me for tracking numbers all the time and I'm like did you think you were getting tracked postage for that price, because lol. mind you I'm selling CDs, so I have no idea if £10 is reasonable for 3 LPs or not, does seem a little high.

but yeah, stuff is taking forever to arrive. I had 2 people not get their parcels sent on the same day 1st class 3 weeks ago, 1 of them just arrived on Saturday, the other one still hasn't turned up yet. people in the UK have been OK about it because they know about the strikes, people abroad mostly OK when I explain that but there's a not can be done about it.
