Chuck reminds me of that story about the guy reaching in the medicine cabinet for hemorrhoid ointment and choosing the superglue by accident

argh sorry

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 5 August 2022 12:23 (one year ago) link

Unless you're John Rambo or something, who keeps superglue in their medicine cabinet?

It's an urban legend.

Last month we got off a train in Edinburgh with two children, two suitcases, two tote bags, a small rucksack and a buggy. Totally forgot about the large rucksack, with raincoats for Scottish Highland weather and my good camera and sunglasses, until an hour later. Luckily got it back the same day after two bus rides to the station and back, 20 mins each way. Today we(*) left a rucksack with my wife's wallet in on the luggage rack of a train in London. Just on the way to pick it up from the terminating station one hour away.

(*) I, obviously.

And today I lost my wallet in a supermarket car park. Found it later well hidden in the car boot but not before cancelling all my cards - which meant we couldn't pay for anything as my wife had cancelled hers after rhe bag incident above (and her google pay was linked to my card!!) and we didn't have any cash, luckily her dad was there to buy ice creams and parking.

Honestly I know looking after kids can max out your mental capacity at the best of times but I am getting worried about my brain.

as rain threatened i carefully closed the window that open in the sitting, entirely igoring the other window, literally right beside it, which was also wide open

enjoyed the downpour outside for a while sat on the other side of my flat, went back into the sitting room to discover plenty of it inside and half the floor awash

Last time we were in SF, I left the car open with a suitcase in it, which was stolen. This time I drove my family crazy by asking "did I lock the car?" every single time we walked away from it.

two weeks pass...

make toast, spread peanut butter / martmite on toast, put knife in washing up bowl. two uncut rounds of toast, have to dirty another knife to get them into mouth-sized pieces. every single time.

I have been using kitchen towel to wipe the knife between uses, would recommend (though have been really going through a lot of kitchen towel)

I have a hierarchy of kitchen towel now. The good, expensive stuff for when it's really needed, and 'blue roll' like what builders use that I buy in bulk for high-volume needs.

i: took a smug moment as i poured the water into my second air-press coffee of the morning, to self-congratulate for remembering to put the filter in (this time!)
ii: realised as the cup filled with hot grounds that i had NOT in fact put the filter in
iii: realised that i had confused "actually putting the filter in" with "carefully reminding myself to put the filter in"

I go through that all the time. "Oh, that credit card bill is due today! So glad I thought of that!"

B got the hardest lesson with that recently. The cat's rego was due, $30, literally chump change. He TOLD me he'd paid it (I usually pay all the bills, I dont know why I left that one up to him).

Next thing we know we have a $380 fine in the mail because he didnt pay it. grrr.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 22:43 (one year ago) link

No, cat!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 23:41 (one year ago) link

They gotta be registered/chipped with the local council.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 23:41 (one year ago) link

I am liking the idea of Lazslo on wheels though.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2022 23:42 (one year ago) link

How do they know if the cat's not chipped? Does your city have cat catchers?

pplains, Thursday, 8 September 2022 02:37 (one year ago) link

Our cats never leave the house, so they're off the grid.

pplains, Thursday, 8 September 2022 02:37 (one year ago) link

If we'd neve registered him to start with? yeah theyd have no idea, and thats what I did with my last cat.

But if he ever ended up in the pound they'd likely just put him down so its a good idea.

for the 3rd time in little over a year i went to the supermarket with no money - i usually go for a walk in the mornings and take only the essentials - sunglasses, phone and keys. this morning the walk ended up in the supermarket and unfortunately they don't take any of those things as payment and i only realised at the till. worse, it was a big shop and a supermarket twice as far away as the last twice, 20 minutes from home.

the last time i did this i hid some paper money in my key-fob as a fall-back, figuring i'd always have that with me. but i'd spent it getting change for the launderette and didn't replace it.

(and will investigate google pay...)

koogs, Wednesday, 14 September 2022 09:47 (one year ago) link

It’s horrible but occasionally helpful that my phone gas a 3 card but teeny wallet door in its back— and i lose/forget/forego my phone the least of my important objects.

i'm intentionally vague, intending to front multitudes (Hunt3r), Thursday, 15 September 2022 16:05 (one year ago) link

i set up Google pay, then checked the lock button and turned off nfc so if i want to ever use it I'll need to turn that back on but...

i hope it doesn't need connectivity because my phone always losses signal in ever supermarket. which i'm sure is illegal if they are actively blocking

making lunch the other day. put the bread back in the freezer. then i wrapped up a leftover onion for the fridge to use later…that evening i went to the fridge to use it up for dinner & couldn’t find it. figured i had imagined it or accidentally binned it by mistake. oh well.

cut to many day later Mr Veg was rummaging through the freezer & pulled out a wrapped up hunk of frozen onion & says with a bemused smile “Is this yours?”

lol facepalm

well at least i can use it now!

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 September 2022 17:46 (one year ago) link

Can you still use a frozen onion once it's thawed? LOL

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 17 September 2022 17:49 (one year ago) link

when my gran moved in with my aunt in the 70s mum and dad inherited her freezer and found it full of frozen onions and lemons

mark s, Saturday, 17 September 2022 17:51 (one year ago) link

yeah it seemed to thaw out ok!
plus you can buy bags of frozen pearl onions at the supermarket so freezing certainly doesn’t hurt them
i don’t know that i’d do it on the regular tho

i have tomorrow's date in my head for some reason but can't think why. is it a deadline? do i have somewhere to be? or was it just the expiry date on a random grocery item?

i think this is series 11 or 12. it was quite a slow burner here having started on a minor tv channel. since it got picked up by proper TV around series 8 there have been daily repeats of the earlier series.

and after all that i noticed halfway through the first episode that i hadn't set a recording for it (but caught the +1 repeat)

(i don't know if that's common but our 'freeview' free to air digital service has a lot of +1 channels which are copies of other channels delayed by an hour)

I get automated calls for supply-teaching jobs. I was cooking, so I moved my handset/land-line into the kitchen so it'd be close by if a call came in. Was sitting at the computer, phone rings, go to where the phone normally is, not there--by the time I remember where it is, I missed the call. (Pretty sure that's what the call was for.)

clemenza, Sunday, 9 October 2022 22:05 (one year ago) link

(Another call came in five minutes later, as I knew it would, plus I'm on a 50-day limit anyway. Otherwise, would've posted in the parallel expensive-stupidity thread.)

I was using one of those small toothpastes you get at the dentist, just becuz. Then I had a minor spill while street skating yesterday and took out a very similar looking tube of neospoorin. When I went to brush my teeth this morning something seemed wrong, etc

going swimming with the kids is a major catalyst for my absentmindedness. i haven't forgotten anything crucial yet (costumes, towels, clothes) but then there's armbands, pool noodle, money for locker... twice i've brought the pool noodle but then left it with the buggy, last time i left the wristband with the locker key in the changing room toilet, luckily it was still there when i remembered five minutes later.

Picked up a CD of Neil Young's "Freedom" cheap in a charity shop. Played it a few days later, went to file it, discovered a copy of the same album already sitting on the shelf.
