i miss cassettes a lot

Mr. Que, Monday, 27 July 2009 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^ my parents have one of these for VHS tapes.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Monday, 27 July 2009 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I had a lot of these years ago. Was looking through two really old ones last night and found CDs I don't even remember hearing let alone owning. They suck as far as storage goes as evidenced by the fact that a lot of those CDs are so scratched they don't even work anymore.

ENBB, Monday, 27 July 2009 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I keep my burned CDs full of mp3s, promo cds without cases and CDs that I've lost the cases to (Likely CDs that once resided in a binder) right on a handy dandy spindle.

the who cares (okamax), Monday, 27 July 2009 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

while I was posting today some fucker took all mine & reviewed them on p-fork, the third binder deserved way better than a 5.4 imo

ha, i always hated tape formats

velko, Monday, 27 July 2009 19:39 (fourteen years ago) link

With most things - music and movies - if it's tucked away in a binder or box, I'm less likely to think of listening to/watching it than if it's in plain view in a stack or on a shelf.

xp velko: so do thieves - when my car was broken into last year, they didn't take any of my cassettes.

free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Monday, 27 July 2009 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link

When thieves hit my parents' house, they specifically stole the stereo and the tapes/CDs. They unplugged the VCR but left it in the middle of the family room floor, but unwired the stereo and stole that and the speakers downstairs. I'm pretty sure it was some asshole I knew from school who knew we were going to be gone and wanted to piss me off; fortunately I was an organized child and had a spreadsheet with all of my albums on it saved on my computer so something like 95% of what was missing was returned.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Monday, 27 July 2009 19:44 (fourteen years ago) link

(should be noted that everyone in town knew my whole family was going to be gone for two weeks and we live literally in the middle of the woods, so thieves basically had totally uninterrupted free time to steal everything in the entire house)

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Monday, 27 July 2009 19:46 (fourteen years ago) link

while I was posting today some fucker took all mine & reviewed them on p-fork, the third binder deserved way better than a 5.4 imo

I heard the 5.4 rating was a typo - was meant to be a 4.5. Now that it's up there for 100,000 pasty white indie rock fans, it's hardly worth changing. Be thankful for what you've got, etc.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

were they pasty to begin with, or are J0hn's CD binders responsible for ... the resultant paste?

velko, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:35 (fourteen years ago) link

When I was still living in New Orleans, I decided to put all my cd's in binders. There are many problems involved but most annoyingly, the cd's stuck to the pages and damaged many of the discs by ripping off the paint from the top sides of the disc. The booklets were all shredded too. If you live in a hot place, do not use these books. If you are someone who values your collection, do not use these books. Worst idea ever. I do use them for burned cd's now that I live in a cooler climate but i'll never put another disc i purchased in one of those horrible things.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link

f you are someone who values your collection, do not use these books. Worst idea ever.

Seconding everyone who says this will scratch your CDs. Do not do this; keep them in the jewel cases.

kshighway, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:45 (fourteen years ago) link

no--use the binders--they're handy for thieves

Mr. Que, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Alright, if you're a thief fan, use the binders. Hail to the (binder) thief, y'all.

kshighway, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Seriously though, I was just lucky that I did this when I was 15 and only had twenty CDs, so not too much got wrecked.

I also once owned a wonderfully defective CD player that actually cut circular grooves in most of my CDs. That was fantastic!

kshighway, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I've got one of those boxes where you press the tab and the disc SPROINGS out.

I got rid of all my jewel cases 7 years ago. None of my CDs have been actually damaged. Sure, they have some surface scratches, but nothing that prevents play.

We also keep our whole dvd collection in CD binders, and haven't ever had a problem.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 11:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the deal is if you get a binder, be careful that you don't go across your cds with a rusty nail en route from the jewel case to the binder. they will get scratched if you do that.

important piece of info often overlooked

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe this was a problem with binders from, oh, 1999? Or perhaps I just bought a shitty binder or didn't know how to take care of my CDs when I was 15?

I haven't used a binder for my records in ten years. RIP.

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh dude, yeah. They came out with new cd binder technologies after that.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Hahaha, fuck you. :-)

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

These things are ugly and cumbersome and largely pointless now. The point of buying CDs in physical format is partly for the sleeves etc - a CD is really just a piece of plastic that holds data. What's the advantage of one of these over an iPod full of high-quality MP3s?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:21 (fourteen years ago) link

if you sell an ipod to someone on the street, you only make one sale

if you sell from an entire binder full of cd's to people on the street, you can make multiple sales

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

In all honesty, I use mine more for computer backup stuff than I do CDs. I stopped carrying music in them after the travel debacle where I left one on a plane and never recovered it.

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Really, kingkongvsgodzilla? (I wasn't really mad, btw, I was just jokingly swearing.) But when you said that, I realized you're probably right . . . I don't think anything's changed with the material they use on the inside of those binders, has it?

kshighway, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:25 (fourteen years ago) link

You need to get the ones with the little dots.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 15:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I swear to god when I was planning to ditch all my jewel cases in May 2002, I went into best buy and there were two types of sleeves for CD binders - one that was normal, and one that had little dots. the little dots ones had a sticker on them that said something like "new cd-protecting dots designed by top engineers at microsoft" or something like that.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I think there are DJs that still use CDs, and they burn CD mixes and then put those in those CD binders and bring them to DJ on their CDDJ Set-ups. I've seen it before, I swear.

the who cares (okamax), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

the cd-protecting dots are an RIAA hoax intended to ruin your collection & make you have to re-buy it
