I am developing a Gatorade habit for the first time in my life. I was always like "ugh, how can something that poisonous-looking be hydrating?" but wow I can just feel all my cells perking back up as I drink it.

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 27 July 2022 02:03 (one year ago) link

Day 3 and I'm still fine so far. But B just got worse and worse and has had to go to hospital :( I'm sure he will be ok with some antivirals, saline IV and a bit of care, its just them being cautious as he has a history of heart issues.

Blergh so stressed out. I'm alone and if I get sick no one can look after me, which is my bloody lot in life.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 06:50 (one year ago) link

I said to the paramedics "its been like 3 days, I'm still feeling fine, I'm in the clear right?" and they gave me this Look, and shook their heads. Hahah thanks ladies!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 06:53 (one year ago) link

oh Trayce that’s scary. i’m so sorry. what’s the visiting situation, do they allow you in there with him?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 July 2022 07:02 (one year ago) link

I was told no, not if he's on the covid ward. Problem we have here is Melbourne is overrun with covid, it is mental, and right now he says hes wating in a bed in a fucking triage tent, waiting for a bed in the hospital :|

So yeah Im a bit stressed out, but he sent me a text saying he learned "doffing" is a word in the context of removing PPE, which was amusing, so he seems to be ok!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:03 (one year ago) link

I was already not coping well having to look after him, getting his 2 kids lunches done/getting them to school and still trying to work and that was only the last 2 days. I dont know how carers of very sick people cope, I was at my wits end after 2 days, lol I'm useless.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:06 (one year ago) link

how are the kids taking it so far?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:08 (one year ago) link

You're not useless - it is a really hard job!

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:09 (one year ago) link

The kids were very good last 2 days - getting teen boys to willing do dishes and get themselves off to school was a triumph hah. I dont think they had much time to process the hospital bit cos it kinda escalated quickly this afternoon - we got their gran to come collect them and take them back to their place, they seemed a bit quiet/alarmed, but she'd come and got them and left before I had much time to process everything. I'm greatful they'd gone before the paramedics showed up.
God Im so exhausted.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:13 (one year ago) link

I am dearly hoping we were careful keeping B isolated in his room and the kids wore masks at home, cos they are NOT BLOODY VACCINATED. Grr.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:16 (one year ago) link

ah jeez :/

that is all quite a lot!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:18 (one year ago) link

My guard was let down - I know heaps of ppl locally who got covid and they were all "yeah it was unpleasant but im ok now" and mostly said it was like a bad flu. We assumed the same, I think. I mean maybe he isnt as bad as it seemed? It was mostly just high fever/shivers/short of breath.

Ugh sorry for rambling on. I'm alone and not dealing great with this. I'm ok though, friends and fam are all aware.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 08:39 (one year ago) link

you did the right thing to get him into hospital. i reckon you’re doing much more and much better than your giving yourself credit for.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 July 2022 09:08 (one year ago) link

Thanks T.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 10:12 (one year ago) link

I am getting text updates of comfy hospital bed, codiene, antivirals and roast beef sammies, so I think things will be ok :)

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 11:56 (one year ago) link

Wow theyre booting him out of hospital already after only 6 hours. I mean thats good, but its also how strained our hospitals are :|

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 12:37 (one year ago) link

hopefully that's a good sign that they've released him already, and hope it isn't too overwhelming looking after him when he's back!

colette, Thursday, 28 July 2022 13:23 (one year ago) link

he is home and tucked in bed I washed all the bedsheets while he was out, hopefully antivirals and codiene will mean a good sleep.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 13:29 (one year ago) link

Why do I always end up being the carer and taking it so seriously, but whenever I get sick no one ever looks after me. blergh.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 28 July 2022 13:30 (one year ago) link

Sorry

Sorry Trayce, glad he's home. Hope you stay well!

Clean sheets are the best thing for any illness imo

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 28 July 2022 15:33 (one year ago) link

How scary! Glad he's home.

I'm coughing a lot, but at this point I pretty much feel like I'm getting over a cold. The first few days were pretty rough, though: headache, body aches, three days of fever, two days of tachycardia. Glad I was vaxxed when I got it.

Lily Dale, Thursday, 28 July 2022 16:17 (one year ago) link

Ugh now this morning I have a cough and my taste has gone weird. GOD EFFING DAMMIT

Ugh, I'm sorry! Day 2 was the worst for me, so I hope it's the same for you and you feel better soon.

Lily Dale, Friday, 29 July 2022 16:34 (one year ago) link

Fever jumped up to 39C very briefly last night, but as soon as I could stomach taking some paracetamol and codiene, it went away and I felt 100% better and actually slept.

Today I dont feel too bad - slight cough, headache.. maybe it'll get worse again? I dunno.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 29 July 2022 22:52 (one year ago) link

when i had it paracetemol was, as i think i documented way near the beginning, like solid gold. i looked forward to it soooo much. but i could only have it three times a day so i'd put it off, put it off, save it up... my life revolved around paracetemol.

the lovely Emma B had it at the same time and to this day i have no idea how we took care of our (young) kids).

Tracer Hand, Friday, 29 July 2022 23:17 (one year ago) link

We're lucky the kids could be sent to their mums (it was her week anyway as of today). I just dearly hope they dont come down with it but I hear kids usually cope with it ok?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 30 July 2022 00:35 (one year ago) link

Every time I see this thread, I feel like singing "The big ol' bug is the new baby now"

Which it is, kinda.

Mark G, Saturday, 30 July 2022 13:16 (one year ago) link

LOL I am ticking off every classic covid symptom one by one. I thought I was rallying well yesterday then I started feeling gluey and coughing again, then I got a dicky tummy, andnow this morning I feel like I have a bad head/chest cold.

i'm cheering myself up with old Fleischer cartoons on Prime sitting under a pile of blankets.

B is still quite poorly with a heavy cacky cough but no fever so I dont think there's any pneumonia concerns.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 31 July 2022 02:12 (one year ago) link

INdeed. Oh! And the loss of taste! God, this blows the most. I can taste salt, pepper, and vegemite and thats about all.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 31 July 2022 03:31 (one year ago) link

This is a very confusing illness. Lately it's been making me feel like there's a weight on my chest and I can't breathe quite right, but only for the first half of the day. Then the weight lifts and for the second half of the day I feel pretty normal. (So far, pulse oximeter says I'm getting enough oxygen.)

Lily Dale, Monday, 1 August 2022 02:24 (one year ago) link

Yeah I am feeling that too! Since last night. Like, I *can* breathe, and its not really *actual* chest pain but my lungs feel heavy somehow. And everythign hurts. And B and I are in really foul moods and keep biting each others heads off, we have no one else to look after us :(

I missed a fairly important work meeting today and tomorrow I was meant to go into the city for a face to face with a big client I manage which of course is completely not happening now.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 1 August 2022 02:47 (one year ago) link

My wife just tested positive for the first time. She was out of town this weekend (one travelling companion so far has also tested positive), I was at Lollapalooza, no doubt exposed to tons of COVID. I've got no symptoms, one kid is fine, the other is out of the country. Let's see how this goes! Whee!

She's got a cough (which she assumed she got from the now out of the country kid, who had what seemed like a mild cold that resolved before she left, and never tested positive). My wife had just gotten her second booster three or so weeks ago.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 August 2022 01:25 (one year ago) link

feel better everyone!

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Tuesday, 2 August 2022 03:10 (one year ago) link

After quite a few close calls, it's finally happened to me. Dang it.

Two days in and it feels like a bit of mildish cold with a bit of fever. Hoping that'll be it.

Keep the Aspidistra TikToking (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 3 August 2022 06:00 (one year ago) link

basically the same for me ^

dodged it for 2.5 years, tested positive yesterday

mild headache, mild sore throat, went to bed with chills last night ... mostly a bad stuffy nose so far

i do have one of the co-morbidities that would qualify me for a treatment ... you all have probably paid better attention than me: should i try to get one now? or wait and see if i start to get worse? i'm on day two of feeling more or less the same.

alpine static, Wednesday, 3 August 2022 06:33 (one year ago) link

iirc Paxlovid works only the first five days of your illness, so I'd try now.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 August 2022 09:27 (one year ago) link

I dunno, I think it depends on whether your co-morbidity is one that puts you at actual risk, or is just a technicality. I know several people in the US that took Paxlovid and hated it- such a terrible taste in their mouth for weeks, they later said they wished they'd just had the few days of a cold it would have been for them. And people seem to be saying "rebound" symptoms are worse with the current variant. Obviously different for those at higher risk, but I probably wouldn't have taken it if I'd had the option.

Not a doctor, obviously, just thought it was interesting reading several accounts from the US, where here in the UK it's very hard to get any of the antivirals.

colette, Wednesday, 3 August 2022 14:06 (one year ago) link

I think the big hole in paxlovid prescription right now is that there isn't a clear protocol for when you need a second round

mh, Wednesday, 3 August 2022 14:08 (one year ago) link

I dunno, I think it depends on whether your co-morbidity is one that puts you at actual risk, or is just a technicality.

None of them are technicalities. They’re the set of risk factors it’s proven to help with.

If you’re eligible and you can get it quickly then I recommend paxlovid. I can tell you my anecdote, which was a good experience, but the fact is it’s proven to massively reduce the risk of serious illness. Does make your mouth taste terrible for the first couple of days though.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 3 August 2022 14:14 (one year ago) link

And yeah it’s crazy they re not testing a 7 or 10 day course right now.

That said, rebound is pretty rare (about 5%?) and is commonly asymptomatic positive tests rather than a second batch of symptoms.
