Elden Ring: YOU DIED on a horse

I posted a video in the Slack Twitch where I hilariously go lance into iron cleaver and it's very satisfying and also I was very stoned at the time. The R2 on the iron cleaver is like a plot twist every time, and if you follow it with something like Sword Dance it feels like you're literally speeding up and slowing down time

Re: bleed. I just figured that if I'm using one two three talismans to "be able to wear the armour" and to "be able to do good damage", I might as well wear one that will "reduce the chance I'll bleed to death" (thus, Mottled +1). I always buff with a blood-prevention meat too if I see a serrated edges on anything

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 22 July 2022 22:50 (one year ago) link

The good thing about Mottled also is that it's cold-preventative as well. Cold can be just as lethal as bleed! That ridiculous Glintblade Of Gargantua thing is a case in point

fgti, I'd love to see your builds!

I clipped this one mostly because I thought the ending was hilarious, I can't believe that worked.

Is the "Hey" an invitation to some sort of parlay?

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 23 July 2022 12:15 (one year ago) link

Closing in on the end now. First Ashen Capital boss down, and also at the inner wall of Elphael.

I’ve perversely enjoyed the haligtree so far: feels harder than anything before but really made me focus - can’t get away with overlevelled mashing so I will use every tool I have to beat these mfs, take their things and get from grace to grace, no matter how long it takes..

Ha Jordan that's awesome

:)

Sometimes I use the "hey" to mean "hey, we're all playing a game, let's have a good time here" before we start fighting.

But if we're already fighting, and maybe they're clearly out of resources and close to defeat, it can mean "hey, let's stop, you were a good sport and I'll give you some and leave".

Or, it can mean "hey, I just murdered you, but we had fun, right? I respect you, see how I'm not doing any rude gestures over your corpse?

I took that as "hey, hiding down there is not cool," lol.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 23 July 2022 15:32 (one year ago) link

Ha, I thought it was "hey, I see you down there, and I know you can't get up, what a ridiculous situation we've found ourselves in."

There was a complaint thread on Reddit where people didn't like "ironic clapping" on the part of a victor

I often clap and it's never ironic!

what is needed is 5 seconds of open voice channel at the end of any PvP battle, so both players can say what they think out loud

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Saturday, 23 July 2022 15:57 (one year ago) link

Nooo, I couldn't play these games if there was any voice chat at all (and categorically refuse to ever wear a gaming headset). We just need more inflections for "hey".

I assume there are people that hack these games to add dialogue options?

Elden Beast can go suck a fuck

FINALLY!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuRHfJkNw40

It took me SO MANY attempts, but I finally beat the Elden Beast in NG+.

I don't remember it being so hard the first time round, but this one stumped me. Up until this point, I'd felt really quite overleveled and even beat Placidusax in under a minute. But this was different.
It felt like I could never get close enough to EB to be able to get a hit in. And if I did, it would one-shot me every time.

Originally I was making the mistake of trying to jump over the golden slash waves, but soon learned that you can roll through them. I still usually got hit by a couple because the timing needs to be super accurate. Lord's Divine Fortification and Haligtree Talisman +2 helped to negate holy damage (but not by much).

I'd used up all my Rune Arcs by this point, had re-specced and leveled up to about 135y, and felt as though I knew the Radagon fight insise out (ironically in this fight I made a fair few silly mistakes).

I think what helped me a lot in this fight was Black Flame's Protection which guards against physical damage. Also worth remembering Maliketh's Black Blade which really seems to take chunks out this boy.
Notice also how many runes I started the fight with - I'd forgotten to spend them! Good thing I won.

Anyway, a tough fight - maybe the toughest fight I've had to do since starting the game. It isn't perfect, but I feel vindicated!

Lotta running in that fight.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 July 2022 17:15 (one year ago) link

nice work dog latin!

All very familiar (PEST THREADS) - it's the end of my first runthrough & I spent the last couple of days getting to know those 2 fucks, who hammered me about 30-40 times.

My dex/arc bleed build not that useful & I found Radagon a pain (his timings, my panic rolling) but the beast felt very doable when I made it through - regularly got it below half health.

A lot of trial and error: tinkering with weapons, buffs, talismans, summons etc. Ended up on Mimic + Bloodhound Fang, then mostly pest threads for the beast. Also used rune arcs for the first time. Once I started getting more of a feel for Radagon & was coming through without burning 6 or 7 flasks, it was definitely in reach.

And this lunchtime I became Elden Lord! Went off with Ranni, read all the credits, then popped back down to gatefront to slaughter the boys for old times' sake. I've got a couple of dragons to kill, might respec (str/fai maybe) & run a few more errands, then on to NG+.

woof, Friday, 29 July 2022 15:53 (one year ago) link

The "nothing works except physical damage on the final boss(es)" treat is such a pain

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 29 July 2022 17:28 (one year ago) link

I think for the final boss I used the black flame tornado ash of war on a maxed out halbert or something with a longer reach, to get maximum fast damage in. For spirit ash, for the life of me I'm not sure why anyone would use anything but mimic or maybe Black Knife Tiche once they become available. FWIW I used Bloodhound Fang for most of my game, with the halbert as a backup for stuff like gargoyles.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 July 2022 17:51 (one year ago) link

In my experiments I tried black flame tornado - both the godskin peeler innate version, and applied to a cross-naginata. I just didn't have the rhythm or timing down for twinblades or spears or long-charge ashes of war, so the experiments went badly.

Same way it's gone for me throughout - upgrade something fun then when it get serious, always power through with fang + morgott or dual katanas (or Great Stars for strike). Means I've got a pretty big pile of fun +9 weapons, so I'm set for a respec.

& exactly - my summons experiments were basically flipping between tear and tiche, apart from 1 very unsuccessful attempt to get my great friend Latenna, who's an Albinauric, to fire arrows at Radagon. She died.

woof, Friday, 29 July 2022 18:19 (one year ago) link

"my great friend Latenna, who's an Albinauric"

My dear friend Mimic Tear, who is me

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 29 July 2022 18:48 (one year ago) link

Mimic all the way for me - esp cos they'll use anything you hold, so stock warming stones and they will chuck them about for healing too!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 29 July 2022 22:54 (one year ago) link

you can also summon them, let them mimic you, then switch your weapon and stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 July 2022 23:00 (one year ago) link

Eventful patch out today, apparently. Rivers of Blood and Bloodhound Step less powerful (which seems more like a PvP QOL adjustment) and Varre quest can I guess now be completed offline through a new NPC invasion. Plus a million other tweaks.

It was making me fat and turning my hands into claws

flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 17:29 (one year ago) link

I was pleased to read about the Varre quest patch - I ended up skipping (and I think breaking?) that quest on play #1, my recent new game I'll have to give it another go.

The only thing is this fucking covid has dragged on so long, and I just cant deal with a game like ER in this state, the brain fog is too much and my reflexes are shot to shit. So Ive not played it in weeks.

This was the most fun invasi-duel I've had in a long time, because it was so long and evenly matched:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aURQ1_nhw6Y

In general the pvp has been a dream since the latest patch, so much more fun to engage in.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 25 August 2022 17:14 (one year ago) link

I've never played online. When people do invasions/duels, do you pick places with no other enemies around? Or if there are enemies, do they get involved/get in the way of the fight, too? I've watched clips, and I could have sworn I sometimes see game enemies get involved, but other times they don't seem to engage.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 August 2022 17:23 (one year ago) link

For the invader/summoned duelist, enemies don't aggro or cause you damage. Unless they're really big, then there's friendly fire (fire-breathing dragons, etc).

So it can be a bit of psychological game for invasions -- of course the host would prefer to fight in an area without enemies, and the invader can't expect to just run into a mob and have the host give chase. But if the host and friends feel confident, or you can make them think you're close to death (maybe pretend to be out of healing items), then you can retreat to an area with enemies and use that to your advantage.

Duels on the other hand are almost always conducted in an area without enemies.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 25 August 2022 17:32 (one year ago) link

Also, if it seems unfair that the invader has enemies on their side, keep in mind that the host and their summoned phantoms don't have friendly fire, so they can just stay in a clump and mash attacks at you if they want.

I do like those Carbot ones; they nail a lot of what's funny and frustrating about the game. I think much of the Manga seems lost in translation though

Fun. I've pretty much only ever played these games as melee builds, so it's fascinating to watch all the different ways people fight PVP.

Related, I've got a bit of anxiety right now, because I've saved my Elden Ring file for when the DLC eventually shows up, but I'm worried by the time that happens that I will have totally forgotten how to play or what all my stuff does. If the game weren't so huge I'd consider playing it again in the lead up to whenever it is announced, but as of yet I've never done a second playthrough of anything ever.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 15:26 (one year ago) link

I'd play more PVP and Collab, but it seems to take forever for me to ever get summoned. Is there a knack to it?

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 November 2022 15:28 (one year ago) link

Listening to the Bonfireside Chat podcast this week, they seem to say there's an abundance of Larval Tears to allow respecing throughout the game. I don't remember getting more than a handful though. And I did Nokron!
