has the nba done anything at this point? hornets didn't pull their qualifying offer so he'll still get paid this year.

i did not realize he was a klutch guy.

just because hes still under contract now doesnt mean he will actually get paid

micah, Wednesday, 20 July 2022 21:15 (one year ago) link

Facing up to ~12 years if convicted of current charges.

Spottie, Thursday, 21 July 2022 00:54 (one year ago) link

since there aren’t any games i doubt the league is in a rush to do anything... feels like the ball is in the hornets court

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 July 2022 01:13 (one year ago) link

And all they’ve done is release the same release twice with the usual “let it play out” stuff

Spottie, Thursday, 21 July 2022 01:20 (one year ago) link

i feel like as long as he’s facing multiple years in prison on credible charges there’s little chance of him being signed. really doubt a team that isn’t charlotte would go out of their way to get involved in this so i guess it comes down to whether the hornets sign him to the minimum amount they can just to retain his rights?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 July 2022 01:23 (one year ago) link

looks like the league has only ever handed down multi year bans for repeated failed drug tests. arenas was suspended for the remainder of the 2010 season over the gun stuff, of course there was artest. from what i can tell silver is working without precedent in a world that takes this stuff more seriously than ever (one hopes) … i feel like he’ll get a long suspension but something far short of being banned for life (not sure that would even hold up legally/CBA wise) and we’ll see if he gets effectively blackballed a la ray rice. i feel like the latter is prob the most likely outcome w/ the league making some implicit decree that he won’t ever play again

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 July 2022 01:26 (one year ago) link

prob can’t rule out some team signing him to a one year deal in a few years & then cutting him two days later after public backlash. can’t trust these teams

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 July 2022 01:27 (one year ago) link

this does seem to be trending toward his career being over one way or another

call all destroyer, Thursday, 21 July 2022 01:31 (one year ago) link

There’s a chance it won’t matter cos he’ll be locked up no?

Spottie, Thursday, 21 July 2022 03:47 (one year ago) link

doubt he gets anything close to the max sentence

micah, Thursday, 21 July 2022 06:39 (one year ago) link

i think once you go to prison for any real length of time (like anything more than a few months) you’re pretty much done as a pro athlete, regardless of how young you are. the only example i can think of is michael vick but he was a no 1 overall pick phenom level player so i think he got an unusual amount of leeway. also his victims weren’t humans which prob made it easier for him to return. henry ruggs will likely serve a sentence that releases him in his athletic prime but i doubt he’ll ever play in the NFL again

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 July 2022 07:40 (one year ago) link

actually matt bush who is a reliever for the rangers did 3 years in prison and was signed after his release and ended up making it to the majors a year later. but he was convicted on a series of DUI crimes, in a sense victimless. and he was also a no 1 overall pick. baseball perhaps a bit unique as well bcuz the he was signed for nothing and sent to the minors so the investment (monetarily, roster wise) was as minimal as could be

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 July 2022 07:47 (one year ago) link

the worst exception i can remember is pitcher josh lueke, whose rape conviction was ignored by multiple teams in multiple leagues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Lueke

the reaction to bauer suggests that things have improved in the last decade (although the fact that literally everyone who has met bauer thinks he’s an asshole is, i think, a real aggravating factor in his case)

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/35281343/amare-stoudemire-charged-battery-allegedly-hitting-daughter

cw: domestic violence
Former 15-year NBA veteran Amar'e Stoudemire is facing a misdemeanor battery charge after he allegedly hit one of his teenage daughters in the face.

Miami-Dade County court records show that Stoudemire, 40, was arrested early Sunday and later released on $1,500 bond with a no-contact order issued.

According to a copy of the police report obtained by The Miami Herald, Stoudemire allegedly struck one of his two teenage daughters during an argument at his Miami home Saturday night. The report did not identify which of Stoudemire's two daughters, ages 17 and 14, was hit.

Stoudemire allegedly confronted the girl and accused her of being disrespectful to his mother during a phone call, according to the police report. When she denied it, he told her, "You're talking back again," and punched her in the jaw, leaving her bleeding, the report says.

The girl contacted her mother, Stoudemire's ex-wife, who came to the home, picked up the two girls and their two brothers, and contacted police.

The report says that when officers went to Stoudemire's home, he told them the teenage girl "was sad because she received a whooping from him for being disrespectful and a liar." He then invoked his right to remain silent.

Stoudemire denied the allegation against him in a statement posted on social media Sunday night.

The sooner sides can reach a deal, the sooner Bridges can seemingly start serving an NBA suspension expected to be handed down for his role in an offseason domestic violence case. Bridges plead no contest to a felony charge in November.

A criminal summons has also been issued for Bridges, which came out Wednesday. Once again, because it has not been served, it’s not public record, so we have not been able to get a copy of it.

The corresponding police report indicated that the victim’s windshield was smashed in and that her protective order was violated by Bridges’ appearance. The incident happened at her residence.

The victim in question is Bridges’ longtime girlfriend. The pair has several children and is in the middle of a custody battle.

Manhattan prosecutors have dropped one of the assault charges against Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr., acknowledging Monday during Porter's hearing in Manhattan Criminal Court that he did not fracture his girlfriend's neck vertebra during an alleged attack at a New York City hotel last month.

According to the New York Post, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Mirah Curzer cited "insufficient evidence" as the reason for dropping the charge of second-degree assault, telling Judge Jay Weiner on Monday, "What initially appeared to be a fractured vertebrae was not in fact an injury caused by the defendant."

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 17 October 2023 13:43 (six months ago) link

it was all just a misunderstanding

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 14:14 (six months ago) link

This trade does a version of the opposite. It commodifies domestic violence in the parlance of NBA contracts. Horrible behavior becomes salary cap maneuvering. Agreeing to pay the remainder of Porter’s contract is worth a vaguely intriguing prospect and two second-round picks. Porter might as well have torn his Achilles tendon for the purposes of this trade. Same upshot, more or less. Both teams took the reality of the situation and used it to pursue their basketball-specific goals. They lined up their assets and made what they thought was a mutually beneficial trade.

Again: morally repugnant. Houston was reportedly shopping Porter around the league, attaching picks to Porter to make a potential trade more appetizing to other teams. The likelihood is if the Thunder had not made the trade, another team would have stepped in to make a similar deal work. The Rockets were clear that Porter was not going to play for them again after the incident. Viewing this through a basketball-first lens, they salvaged the contract they gave Porter the best way they could.

Jane Eyre Jordan (Leee), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 20:03 (six months ago) link

glad someone wrote that

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 October 2023 22:37 (six months ago) link

The issue isn’t so much that the Rockets and the Thunder made the situation work for themselves, but that their ability to do so speeds up the process of forgetting what Porter is alleged to have done. A cynic would suggest that is part of the point in allowing this.

i agree very much with this point from that piece. but i think it leaves a big problem unmentioned (and apologies if i missed it in there)--that there is no realistic mechanism to keep porter from getting his guaranteed money.
