Interesting that London was hotter today than Miami or Miami Beach have ever been in recorded history.

Meanwhile NYC is poised to get 7 straight days of 90+ F (32.2 C) starting Tuesday.

just took thermometer outside it's 35.1°c. The closest I've ever got to the equator is Northern France so it feels absolutely infernal to me. Come back rain, I never once called you miserable and pissy.

all the heat reduction benefits of keeping all the curtains and blinds drawn all day are completely undone downstairs now I've to do some cooking.

Because of the heat (and rising electricity costs) I've fired up my old Mac Mini - a 2012 model, but I've installed Big Sur on it with this tool:
https://github.com/barrykn/big-sur-micropatcher

One thing I can recommend is a utility called smcFanControl:
https://github.com/hholtmann/smcFanControl

Macs typically don't run the fun until they get really hot, but I'm not comfortably with a tiny block of aluminium running at 70c. smfFanControl lets you manually set the minimum fan speed.

for real though i kind of suspect we'll start seeing various official sources lying about the weather in the coming years.

Do you guys in the UK have the "so what? it's *summer*, it's always like this" crew like we Americans do?

Antifa Sandwich Artist (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 18 July 2022 20:47 (one year ago) link

Yes, but with a specific reference to how hot it was in 1976.

AlanSmithee, Monday, 18 July 2022 20:51 (one year ago) link

we have the summer of '76 crew and people posting from holiday in Turkey saying: it's 46°c here and the streets aren't lined with corpses

Yep, tediously several people have been doing this. Plenty of boomer posts, also saw things like this:

xp Texas, so there's air conditioning everywhere (until the power grid fails!) but we still get several dozen to 100+ deaths every summer because landlords are monsters/air conditioning is too expensive to replace/our social safety net is an early death.

we're around 105 for a while, low humidity though. slc utah. monsoon moisture has been blessing us sporadically over the past two weeks. we're right at the northern tip of its reach so it isn't much. even though the colorado plateau has had a few better than average monsoon years, the colorado river system is basically collapsing from drought.

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 18 July 2022 23:31 (one year ago) link

The killer down here is that it will be a low in the high 80s for three minutes at 4AM so there's never a respite, no chance for the daily heat to dissipate, people with bad/no AC can't sleep and don't have anywhere to go.

Along those lines, anyone performing the Hajj this year and not in, say, 2036, is CRAZY.

it's 40.5°c rn. A couple of degrees higher than what bbc weather is showing. There is a steady breeze but the air is so hot it doesn't bring any relief.

had a round of golf today but teed off at 5.30am so it was manageable. still amazed to see joggers towards the end of my round just after 8am when it was getting p crispy.

This is so horrible. Curtains closed all day for the last three days, trapped in an endless cycle of sweating, crying and drinking water to try to replenish my hydration. Everything feels awful. The only okay thing is that the cats seem to be managing alright and are enjoying the novelty of playing with ice cubes.

I am dying for a storm right now.

my poor labbie just gives up and looks despondent, genuinely sadness in his eyes. My son can't cope either and it's much harder to deal with his meltdowns in this heat. Cold showers have been useful though.
