"pandemic cognitive dissonance"

otm, the "pandemic of the unvaccinated" rhetoric was quite short-sighted imo

strong disagree tbh

Covid for the first time, testing positive on the first day of my annual leave. Likely traceable to partner's colleagues at a work do, where they were blatantly symptomatic. I get that some people's employment situations don't give them much choice but this wasn't one of those cases. Wearied.

djh, Thursday, 22 December 2022 21:34 (one year ago) link

(UK question not that it should change anything).

What's the "correct" point for considering yourself free from Covid?

I'm sure there was a point where it was "Test from day five and you're fine to be out and about when you've had clear LFTs on two consecutive days", where the day you were clearly symptomatic or the day you first had a positive test were considered Day 0.

^ England. Wales and Scotland are devolved for health matters and have different options. it's actually quite vague and there's no legal requirement any more, just guidance. (when i had symptoms this time last year, which came to nothing, i was legally barred from being out except to post the pcr test back to them)

koogs, Monday, 26 December 2022 00:24 (one year ago) link

Thanks Koogs.

(Definitely trying to do the "right" thing rather than necessarily the legal thing and not wipe out friends and family!)

djh, Monday, 26 December 2022 11:29 (one year ago) link

Of course, I mean "vague government advice" thing rather than "legal" thing.

Every now and then I notice what I think of as "covid detritus" - i.e. posters with instructions for social distancing, notes urging you to wear a mask, hanging from windows of stores that absolutely are no longer following those guidelines. Even air travel seems to have a fair bit of this, abandoned empty containers of hand lotion in airports and such.

On the one hand I kinda understand because obv there was no D Day of "covid is done now" but at the same time there's something quite eerie about this, I wonder how it must feel like to grow up around these strange reminders.

(nb this is not an attempt to belittle ppl still taking precautions, I'm just talking about places that absolutely do not do that)

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 10:57 (eight months ago) link

Ha. I just walked past Bradenton Beach City Hall and its COVID precaution signs that I'm sure lost their potency a couple years ago.

A couple of months ago I used a hand sanitizer at a local establishment that must not have been used for area as the alcohol had turned to vinegar which was extremely unpleasant

joygoat, Thursday, 3 August 2023 00:45 (eight months ago) link

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 3 August 2023 06:44 (eight months ago) link

You see this stuff everywhere in London. Agree that it's eerie. Big post-apocalyptic video game energy. Even my doctor's office still has "you MUST wear a mask" signs up. Which.... has not been true for at least a year and a half. Feels like the next logical step is to rummage for crafting materials and audio diaries.

For some reason this feels like the right thread rather than the masking one—

got my shot today, first time with Moderna rather than Pfizer. i was weirdly more nervous than i’ve ever been?!?

I will test my new capabilities later today. Frankly don’t feel as shit as I expected!

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Monday, 23 October 2023 11:22 (five months ago) link

The most recent booster only gave me a slightly sore arm for a day or two, but none of the mild cold like side effects of the previous booster.

deep wubs and tribral rhythms (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 23 October 2023 12:56 (five months ago) link

I got the booster and my flu shot on the same afternoon, mixed a Negroni when I got home, and felt great!

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 October 2023 12:57 (five months ago) link

I had Pfizer booster a week ago and was fine on the day, albeit with a sore arm. The following day, I was very tired but that lifted the day after that.

steely flan (suzy), Monday, 23 October 2023 13:03 (five months ago) link

Similarly to others itt, this booster (Pfizer) unlike the others previous had basically no ill effects other than spending half a week feeling like I'd gotten two for flinching.

Huh, I haven't polled which version of the jab they got, but seems like most folks I know have reported being hit way harder by this one than the other rounds.

steely flan (suzy), Monday, 23 October 2023 13:44 (five months ago) link

Ahhhh, ok. Gotcha. Good that it wasn't bad side effects-wise. I never had any symptoms with mine but I know a lot did. Need to find out if I can get mine through work.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 23 October 2023 13:47 (five months ago) link

I only experienced fatigue after the 2021 booster.

Booked for my Nov. 2 shot(s). Psyched. I can't remember, did they give out "I got my shots!" covid vax stickers, or anything like that? If not, feels like a missed opportunity.

i got my shots about a week ago and 1) no documentation (or sticker) was offered, so i updated my card myself 2) got flu shot at same time and felt no noticeable side effects 3) i was under the impression that this was an entirely new vaccine, not a booster?

re: the covid detritus upthread, I was somewhere recently that still had those stickers on the floor six feet apart demarcating where you were supposed to stand in the checkout line.

peace, man, Monday, 23 October 2023 16:55 (five months ago) link

I still see those in most supermarkets, and even the ones that removed them will have ghostly traces until they replace the linoleum.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 October 2023 19:17 (five months ago) link

My least favorite relics are the sneeze guards, often crudely made and intrusive. They never did anything! Why are they still around?

I do love the old signs and have been slowly building a photo collection of them.

I'm scheduled for a booster tomorrow AM and I'll probably add on a flu shot, too. I'm hoping it will be no more trouble than the previous injections, but I'm planning on taking it easy for a couple of days, just in case.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 23 October 2023 19:49 (five months ago) link

I got the new one a couple weeks ago, and the only side effect besides the sore arm was feeling a little muscle-achy the day after.

nickn, Monday, 23 October 2023 20:23 (five months ago) link

And on the relics front, many businesses when they did open kept their restrooms locked. Now that there are no restrictions on any other aspect of having a store, the restrooms are still off limits. I guess they discovered it's easier/cheaper to not have them for the public.

Starbucks still reluctant to leave cream out. They fucking pour the cream into the coffee as if they were Dunkin Donuts. Judging from those portions, I didn't realize Americans prefer a side of coffee with their cream.

I find the amount of cream most people put in their coffee absolutely repulsive, personally— but hey, as long as it’s not my coffee, who am i to judge
