PES5 (PS2) >>>>>>>>> PES5 (x-box)

despite some unforgivable slowdown this thing is LOVELY

top tip in a line of top tips to come: change your long passing type to type 4... this means that inside the crossing box (tht area of the park where it normally auto-crosses if you press O) you still retain full (power-bar) control over long passes and so can better direct crosses... mmm lovely

c7n (Cozen), Monday, 24 October 2005 17:27 (eighteen years ago) link

where do you change that setting?

I am getting into it now, I have to say, you can do some very fluid movements forward.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 October 2005 18:01 (eighteen years ago) link

button configuration

you can still use the ordinary crosses (O, Ox2, Ox3) by holding down L1 then pressing... this just gives you a nice other option, which is great for actually picking out players rather than relying on the randomness of the auto-cross

if I buy a network adapter for my PS2 can I just plug and play PES5 online?

anyone down for some action if I get it going?

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 09:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I am tempted to buy one too, if I do then yes.

I think it's supposed to be easy enough to set up if you have a broadband connection already.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't you need to pay a Sony online subsription, like with XBox Live?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

my problem is my broadband setup at home is wireless and very temperamental

I just bought the network adaptor anyway - so we'll see how this goes

I'll report back

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:29 (eighteen years ago) link

"With the purchase of a separate unit called the Network Adaptor (which is built into the newest system revision), some PS2 games support online multiplayer. Instead of having a unified, subscription-based online service like Xbox Live, online multiplayer on the PS2 is free, but split between publishers."

I feel the need to draw attention to a feature of the PES games that's probably not been discovered by most people.

You can rewind time in the free training/practice match mode.

So for example if your cross gets cleared by a defender you rewind to the appropriate point and instead put a high cross into the back post. This point in time becomes 'bookmarked' so you can very easily rewind over and over experiment with all the different crosses - each time with the striker and defenders in the same position so you can judge the variations properly.

Similarly you are through on goal and blast your shot over - rewind and instead try an R2 side foot shot - rewind and try to chip the keeper.

You lose the ball - rewind until you have posession back.

Wonderful.

By the way you have to press R2 AFTER pressing the shoot button to do a side foot shot.

Offensive? Unsuitable? Report this comment.

I had a little fiddle about with this feature a long time ago in PES4 but had completely forgotten about it... if I remember correctly it's kinda fiddly but v. useful for creating 'test conditions' where you can try difft. approaches over and over in the one situation

c7n (Cozen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Training mode? People use this?
Maybe this explains why I'm not very good.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:54 (eighteen years ago) link

particularly stupid-headed guardian review

c7n (Cozen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 11:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Fortunately the more you play the more innovations you will spot, which is just as well as the game is superficially identical to its predecessor.

huh. i played my friend's version of pes5 on sunday night and noticed MANY differences almost immediately. the animation is much smoother.

foxy boxer (stevie), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:58 (eighteen years ago) link

The surprisingly widespread view that PES5 is almost identical to PES4 is base idiocy.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Thursday, 27 October 2005 15:41 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah have these people never played PES4, have they never played it every day for a whole year? fools.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

haha!

This game is incredible. It's really started clicking, especially in two player, the neat passing, the long build ups for goals. It's magical. You only get two or three great chances a game, and you must make them count!

At the moment AC Milan are my preferred team.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 October 2005 12:50 (eighteen years ago) link

I hope it'll click for me. I'm still stuck on two difficulty and any time i try on three or four i always end up with a 0-0 draw. My biggest problem is that running/dribbling used to be the strongest aspect of my game and now i am absolutely useless at it, i can still pass well. I have pretty much given up for football manager 2006 anyway.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

ronan otm... this is pretty much the best PES ever

glorious when it all comes together... plus the best defenders in the game are immense: john terry is a legend

still playing with arsenal as my team

c7n (Cozen), Monday, 31 October 2005 21:24 (eighteen years ago) link

hello, my name is ramirete.

i`have the pes5 but i dont found a page where i can play this perfect game in the internet...so i need help, if someone know where i can play it, please send me a e-mail!

thanks!

ramirete, Monday, 31 October 2005 23:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I always had this steady sense of incremental improvement, but having had my first multiplayer session at the weekend I came back and beat Blackburn 4-0 away in the Master League and subsequently went on a run of beating the top clubs. So yeah it's kind of Clicked, but I was sort of bizarrely enjoying the 0-0 drudges in a weird masochistic kind of way just because they felt real.

I would possibly have felt a bit more outraged if I didn't play as Villa all the time.

rio natsume, Friday, 4 November 2005 18:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Earlier I beat Chelsea 4-1 in the D1 Cup Final in Master League, scoring a first half hat-trick with noted complete donkey JP Angel. Those red condition arrows make a reeeeal difference.

During an earlier 3-2 league victory over Chelsea in which John Terry scored an own goal, I found myself setting the replay camera to follow his unpleasant smug face, that I might watch the exact moment when realisation dawned that he had turned the ball hilariously into his own net. You know, like Ralph Wiggum's heart bursting.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Saturday, 5 November 2005 18:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I had a humorous moment last night with Portugal. After a goalmouth scramble which followed a corner, Cristiano Ronaldo eventually managed to bundle the ball into the net. However as he attempted to run off to celebrate he became entangled in the net and began writhing back and forth. This went on for a while, and then he eventually broke free and ran off celebrating............

ONLY TO FIND THE LINESMAN HAD RAISED THE OFFSIDE FLAG BUT HAD TO WAIT TILL THE END OF THE CELEBRATION!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 6 November 2005 12:47 (eighteen years ago) link

that is fantastic.

I have finally purloined a copy. should I pack up the ps2 and take it to work tomorrow?

geez gettin the game was one helluva headache(spent my allowance on my girlfriends birthday, so couldnt afford it.. had to download it!!!)...my broadbands majorly temperamental off late, only works(that too, miserably) so i sat up ALL NIGHT reconnecting to bittorrent every half an hour!! Geez i wanted it so bad!! as somebody said, it IS like starting all over again.. u cant just tear up ur opposition like PES4, but its good.. more challenging..I was amazing at 6-star wid PES4, but had to go down to 2-star for a while.. a lot of 4-0, 5-0 victories gone, n im ready for 3-star.. THIS IS AN AMAZING GAME!! they've done a great job with the subtle tweaks in graphics.. wish i didnt have so much to study for engineering, only get time after midnight!!! oh.. if anybody's up for a lil one on one, email me, n we can fix up sometime..
cheers!

Azeem the Great, Monday, 7 November 2005 16:25 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, and if anybody thinks this is game is, what was it? 'superficially reminiscent to its predecessor'.. dont believe that for an instant.. this is a whole new deal.. much more fluid, more realistic(didnt think that could be possible after PES-4, but proven wrong by technological advances again!) its an absolutely brilliant game, that has all of PES-4 and MUCH MUCH MUCH more to offer.. i only wish the ref was a bit less trigger happy and allowed a bit of physiccally, but watever, they'll come out wid a tweak for that sooner or later.. advantage of havin the PC version!

azeem the great, Monday, 7 November 2005 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

im starting to get the hang of 3-star now.. basically u need a more measured approach and a helluva lot of patience...managed to beat chelsea 2-0 wid Man United..i really cant understand why they bothered adding AI to the players team in this game, coz you keep having to 'super cancel' every single attacking run it makes..long passing mode 4 in button config makes it a tad more convenient, so i'd advise that

azeem the great, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 15:07 (eighteen years ago) link

good god this is hard. how do people with no prior PES experience go when they come to the game for the first time??

pretentiosexual rights activist (haitch), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 04:06 (eighteen years ago) link

thought I was getting a handle on it. thought wrong! sliced apart... by BELGIUM!

pretentiosexual rights activist (haitch), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:23 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah I keep having false dawns. I still think this game is nothing in one player compared to two player, like the difference is vast, just far more open games in two player, the computer can time tackles and things in a way no human ever could!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Have we got an FAQ for complete names of players / teams / stadiums etcetera so I can re-name all the ones I give a shit about? It just arrived...

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

It's taken nearly three weeks but I am getting to grips with this now. Second in Liga Espana with Barcelona. Still not scoring enough goals, but my defence is tight. The goals I have got have included some crackers - a 35-yard drive by Ronaldhinho after the opposition forward lost possession straight from their kick-off (right after they'd conceded a goal, not to start a half), a few free-kicks with Henry when I played as Arsenal and now with Deco at Barca. It's hard but I'm getting there. It requires Zen football.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 24 November 2005 10:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Ronan is OTM abt difficulty of computer defenders. It honestly seems like they have some sort of preternatural knowledge abt every footstep i am going to make. I miss being able to dribble but a much slower passing play style is still fun, i am just scoring a lot less.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 24 November 2005 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

one year passes...

I picked this (PS2) game up a few weeks ago for a fiver. I've never played any Pro Evolution games before, and I'm finding it very difficult. I scored my first goal yesterday, after realising that you can't just hammer balls at the goal at hope for the best, as was the case with the last football game I played which was probably FIFA 95 on the Megadrive. But the main difficulty I'm finding with the game is actually getting the ball off the other team. The possession in my last game was something like 58%-42% in the other team's favour. The just pass the ball between themselves, my players actually seem to be running away from the ball. Pretty much every sliding tackle results in a foul.

So basically my problem is this: how do I intercept passed balls, and if one of my players is next to an opposing player with the ball, how do I get it off him?

Any other advice is gratefully received!

two years pass...

This thread died off pretty quick after the game actually came out. Did everybody just decide 4 was actually better, or what happened?

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 26 September 2009 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

probably better than 4 in retrospect, didn't like it as much at the time

cozwn, Saturday, 26 September 2009 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link

haha, just read my old posts, OK seems I did like it at the time; I don't remember liking it as much

cozwn, Saturday, 26 September 2009 21:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Cozwn - I also remember you posting this less than a year ago...

my all-time top 10:

1. PES2 (PS1)
2. PES4 (PS2)
3. SWOS
4. PES5

I've been playing both 4 & 5 back to back this weekend (on PC) and feel like they both hold up quite well. 5 does seems a little slicker and the commentary seems a little more varied, but I think you can still play 4 online, while 5 has no more online as it depended on Konami servers(?). The quality of graphics on both is quite nice and the gameplay feels well balanced - though I'm no expert. Sometimes I think we discard these older games far too fast.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 27 September 2009 01:09 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd definitely revise that list to take out PES5 and replace it w/FIFA 09. it's in no particular order, either. FIFA10 looks already (from the demo) to be a ton better than 09 so you could probably already confidently just slot that in there in its stead.

cozwn, Monday, 28 September 2009 14:32 (fourteen years ago) link

watching some videos of PES2 (PS1) on youtube, I forgot how comical the sound effects were; it's incredible how much smoother looking the gameplay is compared to the current PES build:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAppC0H8BBc
we used to play loads of this game even long after PES had moved onto 4 and 5

PES 2009 I have, and I have grave concerns about paying money for a sequel, assuming they will use the same game design, or indeed employees.
