WE JAM ECONO: THE STORY OF THE MINUTEMEN
2005, 85 minutes, video

Like an angel from heaven D. Boon fell from a tree in San Pedro's Peck Park, landing squarely on Mike Watt. The two thirteen-year-olds lives would never be the same. The two friends grew up to form both a deep personal and musical bond, a bond which formed the foundation of one of the most revered, intriguing, and groundbreaking bands of the early 80s. Beginning in 1979, in a whirlwind of five years The Minutemen released eleven records, ranging from 7" singles to the epic double-album Double Nickels on the Dime, an output totaling over 150 songs! They crisscrossed the country, opening for bands ranging from Black Flag to REM, as well as on their own headlining tours. Tragically, at the very peak of their creative force, The Minutemen were brought to a halt when D. Boon was killed in a van accident just three days before Christmas 1985. This amazing documentary tells the story of The Minutemen primarily through their own music and a ton of rare and smokin' live footage. People interviewed to shed insight or give props include Watt, drummer George Hurley, Watt's mom, Henry Rollins, Greg Ginn, Ian MacKaye, Thurston Moore, J. Mascis, John Doe, Richard Hell, and many more. If you love The Minutemen, or if you love music, period, or if you ever had a best friend, this film is for you.

skyway does rule. slocki should go. get the oyster omelette and the something-something-mee, with the tofu and fish cakes and coconut/curry broth.

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I (personally) find Chowhound and eGullet to be better informed, more refined and cultured (less "oh they speak English here, praise the lord!"), not to mention similar to my tastes than any mainstream mags.

Not sure if you're willing to go the e-foodie route (as yes it is scary) but worth a peak at the very least. Vast amounts of information and the discussion stays current (chefs leaving, ownership/recipes changing), another advantage.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

aww it'll happen one day (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:19 (seventeen years ago) link

steve i'm totally into the e-foodie route, i use those sites a lot here. fuck, e-gullet people can be such bitches though... i tried to join once but they wanted me to write an ESSAY on why i deserved to be a member... no joke

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i read that ny magazine cheap eats link above and can attest that of the those i know, at least two of the 5 star cheap eats are pretty expensive. the 4 star picks are promising though.

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

ha probably.

hey did you ever get a chance to go to Queue de Cheval? Out of curiosity, how does it rate in the "Top X restaurants" polls?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

i still have never been! although to be honest i think the consensus is that QDC isn't worth the mad mad cash
