I liked the video during his number retirement ceremony today, where other Mets/friends spoke out his life story in the first person.

Huge huge standing ovation for Mookie Wilson who was also in attendance.

He's the highest ranked non-HOF first baseman on Jay Jaffe's JAWS list if you eliminate 1) guys who are going to make it (Pujols, Cabrera, Votto, and--trickier, maybe--Helton) and 2) PED cases (McGwire, Palmeiro). He's right on the fence at 60.3 career bWAR. Assuming his drug past is no longer an issue, I think he will go in via the Veteran's Committee within the next decade or so (one of many players who may benefit from Baines's induction).

can't remember the details but someone on twitter was recently touting him as basically the best-fielding first baseman of all time -- and that no other player who led his position in gold gloves hadn't made the hall

i think we can all agree that gold gloves are not dispositive. but he was pretty good (and has subsequently been v. good for baseball, even if that's not immediately relevant)

I think it was Scott Boras

Before today, the last time the Mets won on a walk-off error with 2 outs in extra innings:

1986 World Series, Game 6. Gets through Buckner.

Some magic on Keith Hernandez Day.
