I guess the grotesqueness didn't feel overboard to me. Stop-motion is the perfect medium for messy, squelchy stuff, and it's well-balanced with drifty atmospheric parts.

Some parts - like the tank battle - also v much appealed to the old Warhammer 40k fan in me (I was always vastly more into the miniatures, environments, and lore than actually playing the game.)

Ha I was getting some definite Warhammer vibes in general, hardly a direct equivalence but more like the general atmosphere and social dynamics as such (as much as they're even clear).

tfw there’s a little worm baby with teeth inside of you that when alchemized into gold glitter will produce an immersive vision of the rebirth of the universe

could not have been more tailored to my tastes

About right!

viscerally upsetting at numerous points on account of all the squelching

My bf tried to book this to show at one of our local independent cinemas but it was too expensive, bah. Gonna get the DVD for home-watching instead.

I remember at our screening, there was a brief intro snippet beforehand of Phil Tippett speaking - I guess he'd recorded individual intros for all of the towns where the movie was showing - and he was clearly so done with it. "Rhrrrm, hello... Ottawa."

poor old Phil

I wanna hammer BluRays of this onto the doors of every digital cgi house in Los Angeles who have so clearly failed at any kind of transcendence. The computational power of gods and the vision of a crumpled up piece of paper.

Would love to know if Jodorowsky has seen this.

I really wish Tippett had managed to get 35mm prints struck of this.

I made a word cloud out of the hearing impaired descriptive text subtitles

Further to this, bf decided he wanted it enough to weather the costs and is putting it on soon. Fingers crossed we will have a personal video from Tippett & Dan Wool to introduce it, eep!

Liked this except for the live action bits which took me out of it and made me feel like I was watching a NIN video or something.

Tippett did some work on a sweet episode of Pokerface, Nick Nolte played a character inspired by him.

earlier this year Mad God was featured on The Last Drive-In, it's worth watching that episode on Shudder for Joe Bob Briggs' interview with Tippett

yes it’s a fantastic interview
