Good brand for swim trunks? I've had the same crappy pair from Target for like 5 years now and it's time to move on. I should note that I am not extremely slim, more in the dadbod category.

three weeks pass...

tlg i ordered a pair of rainbow flipflops to my parents' house and i am wearing them now and they're awesome. i love them. i walked about 10 miles on the south downs in sussex with them because i developed a blister from my boots lol. they are still in perfect shape.

Why are people wearing undershirts with polo shirts? I have not seen this until this year. Granted, I haven't been looking, but anyway it seems goofy to me.

To me, the tech-bro logo polo shirt is already casual. I don't like them mich but they are ubiquitous in brofessional spaces.

Dude. You are not "more dressed up" if we can see that you have a basic-ass Hanes t-shirt underneath it.

the visible undershirt was weird from the beginning, whats the meaning, i have taken off my tie, is it an implied tie

lag∞n, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:50 (one year ago) link

pretty weird! it doesn't make sense. the best i could come up with is it's some modesty pose. like polos are too revealing of the chest and must be supplemented with a white undercovering.

ꙮ (map), Friday, 7 October 2022 14:54 (one year ago) link

I guess you don’t have to wash your polo shirt as often?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:54 (one year ago) link

but in that case a v-neck is going to be a better vibe

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:55 (one year ago) link

i’m speaking purely as a theoretical polo shirt wearer you understand

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:55 (one year ago) link

i know i have talked about this on here before but exposed undershirt is a scourge. i hate it.

call all destroyer, Friday, 7 October 2022 14:57 (one year ago) link

I think that's it, not sweating the polo to death. Is it a Southern thing? The two people that come to mind who I've seen doing it were from Georgia and Texas.

The self-titled drags (Eazy), Friday, 7 October 2022 14:57 (one year ago) link

Yeah this is why I don't do visible undershirts also. I don't want to see your underwear.

Dude, they sell v-necks, or you could just, I dunno, wear shirts normally?

Historically, underwear was to protect your nicer outer clothes so you didn't have to wash / dry clean / replace them as often. When cloth was expensive and laundry was time-consuming.

But if you're just going to put your stupid polo shirt into the washing machine anyway, just go ahead and wear it normally! Ditto your normal no-iron button-down dress shirt from Macy's or whatever. It isn't made of cloth-of-gold. Just wear it, wash it, wear it, wash it.

How about flannel shirts?

The self-titled drags (Eazy), Friday, 7 October 2022 15:00 (one year ago) link

that makes sense, the sweat and not washing the shirt as much. still feel like there's some covering-up frisson going on but that's because i'm gaaaaay. i love polos, polos 4 life imo.

xxp maybe some people don't want them to fade as fast.

imo its ok with a flannel, more of a rolled out of bed look, maybe its just a normal tshirt too, and then there are the open flannel wearers, like a shirt jacket except its just a shirt

lag∞n, Friday, 7 October 2022 15:04 (one year ago) link

Re: flannel shirts or shackets, the central question is: are you going to re-wear this shirt without washing it?

I seriously doubt these gentlemen are wearing two shirts, going home and only washing one. I just can't imagine that they carefully hang up their outer tech-bro-logo-polo and only wash the undershirt.

No. Pretty sure they throw everything in the laundry.
They're not working in the rice fields or living in squalid Victorian hovels. Also it's October. They go from a climate-controlled apartment and walk twelve feet to a climate-controlled car and work for eight hours in a climate-controlled office.

Just don't get it.

clothes are not exclusively about ones laundry practices, nor are they exclusively worn in offices

washing most clothes after a single wearing is deranged

for the undershirt q: I don't get it with polos, agreed there, same with like plain white or blue dress shirts, but we're not talking about any visible t-shirt underneath a long-sleeved shirt with buttons, right? I do that all the time for reasons including warmth and chest hair I don't need people to contemplate. Also some shirt material is more abrasive/less pleasant than a t-shirt.

Lagoon and tracer, you're both right, but to clarify, I started out specifically thinking about a group of doodz in a specific office (where I happen to be working temporarily). Then I saw a photo in the Post:

[Removed Illegal Image]

Anyway. No, not all clothes are office clothes. No, laundry practices are not the only consideration. Yes, it is totally okay to re-wear something that has been worn and isn't actively dirty without being a sloven. Yes, like most people I absolutely have a "not yet washed but still viable" category."

BUT

I don't think the guys in this very stodgy office are re-wearing their tech bro logo polos. I just don't. Yet their t-shirts are showing and I find it lightly unseemly. End of the world? No. But it is not my taste, taste-wise.

one month passes...

I need a new winter jacket/parka - something not too puffed out/with a relatively slim profile. Something good for typical NY winter days, not super downed-up expedition parka. No quilting/puffer.

Willing to get a bit spendy on this one, want something that will last, withstand the elements, and look stylish enough to wear to the office/going out. I also have a big puffy utilitarian Eddie Bauer parka for being out snow shoveling and that sort of stuff.

Don't really know where to start. Ideas?

Also I tend to like stuff that falls around mid-thigh or a little shorter, fwiw

feel like what I'm looking for is like a hip-length parka that's just not too puffy/thick

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 23 November 2022 04:41 (one year ago) link

man alive what about trying something really puffy, would you be into that?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 23 November 2022 09:22 (one year ago) link

I really don't know what to do about winter coats these days. A few years ago I spent about £200 on a Didrikson parker-style coat that looked like the kind of thing you'd wear in an Arctic laboratory. It did the trick, however the large hood/ruff and long tail prohibited me when I was cycling. Also whenever I got to my destination, I'd be stuck for five minutes looking for a place to dump this gigantic sleeping-bag of a coat which doesn't even fold up nicely.

So now I'm thinking I might sell it and get a decent waterproof, then layer up according to how cold it is.

A friend of mine got an absolutely lovely jacket from this place: https://labomono.com/ - she got the black and white design which looked really great on her because she has vivid red hair. That said, I don't know if I love the other designs, and I'm not sure the b/w would suit me the same.

It's a shame about winter costs/waterproofs that you can spend a long time getting ready to go out, then having to dump an ugly plastic thing on you it's like "No"

agreed go puffy or go home

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 November 2022 12:44 (one year ago) link

anyway the real answer is we live in the golden age of weirdly warm for how thin and not puffy they are winter jackets all the outdoor brands have them patagonia northface etc

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 November 2022 12:49 (one year ago) link

right it's crazy. I am basically 90% workwear & natural fibres but bought an arcteryx proton last year. Not even a jacket really but it is some dark cozy weightless textile magic.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 23 November 2022 13:34 (one year ago) link

I have an REI jacket that is just the exact perfect weight - I can't find it listed rn but it is similar to the Arcteryx line
